Presumably, at some point, a flash drive would be a potential way to take something. And easier.I don't want to have to lug the entire console or some such.

>And I, myself fall into that category. But we still use it, and as long as there is a demand for bills, they aren't going anywhere. I guess that's my point. DD may find a place amongst many, even a majority, but it will never eliminate the demand for physical copies
I will happily concede that. I suppose the difference will be in the level of profitability of producing physical copies. The demand will not be eliminated, but will be significantly eroded. Given this it is much less likely for companies to invest in new physical formats. An example of this is LP's. Analogue recording of information has been largely superceded by digital recording so we aren't (currently) seeing any further development of vinyl-like formats. Although they have become obsolete they are still sought after by a minority.

If some kind of failure happens with the company, or something happens with the website/server, or my hardrive messes up, with a hardcopy you always have a backup, you cant say that with digital stuff, hard copy is much safer, it's always there, and i'm one of those people that when I buy something, i like to have it in my hand i feel like i actually bought it.
I agree but if digital distributors let you download whatever you have paid for before, for example a live arcade game, if for some reason my harddrive kicks the bucket, I can download everything again for free. then losing things won't be an issue, sure you have to download it again, but you will live, cool thing on the xbox is that you can donwload stuff and turn off the system and it will continue doing so, its not like you have to be there watching it download. :)
does that make any sense? :D
Also, if your house burns down or your dvds are stolen, you can still re-download them.does that make any sense? :D

Netflix is a format now? What?
ANd last I checked, Netflix offers BR and was one of the first companies to chose bR exclusively over HD-DVD.
I dont know. Downloading movies still takes kind of a long time, and not everyone has a fast internet connection. Also, I cant see anyone with an on-demand service choosing to wait two hours to download a movie in HD when they could do it with the click of a button on cable. DLM are interesting, but if I buy a movie, I want a physical copy, and if I rent a movie it will be from the comfort of my couch.Darthmatt
You do not download Netflix videos they are streamed to you.
[QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"]Oh, I'm sure they'll still have Limited Edition hard copy stuff for the collector.I'm a big film geek and I have to admit that special edition packaging is part of what makes the hobby fun. The LOTR "book" design on the SEE dvd's. The blade runner that came in a suitcase. You can't get that kind of geeky fun from a digital download. I know its not a big reason but its a novelty that I don't want to lose entirely. Heck I stll love looking through the booklets that come with CD's. Check out the lyrics. The design on the CD. Its all part of the product if you ask me. Not just the music or the movie.
Jandurin
or maybe you purchase your DD movie and you get a collectors package sent UPS? why not? companies will still save money not having to package every disk, and not everyone will care or want anything extra, but when you have it in a store, there is no guarantee that all of them will sell.

On the computer or onto the TV? Because the only advantage I see that has over an on-demand service is netflix has a greater movie library.[QUOTE="LEGEND_C4A"]Also, if your house burns down or your DVDs are stolen, you can still re-download them.does that make any sense? :D

yaaa because when people see their house on fire there DVD collection is there 1st priority
Or when they return to find out that they have been robbed they are thinking " damn i hope he didnt take my 300 DVD"
(since if you were robbed you would have no computer, tv left to watch it on anyway) :P

People put a lot of stock in their collections.Believe it or not, it will never take off with the mass market. Why? Bandwidth caps from ISPs. Downloads taking over are a thing of the future, not the present. Whoever thinks DLs are now is just ignorant. I'm not wasting a significant amount of my 60GB bandwidth on my movies.Albanian_Killa
as more people jump on the DD bandwagon, providers will find a way to make it easier for people. remember where ever the masses go, companies will follow to get a piece of the pie.
things might not be perfect or easy, but things will get better, dont they always?

On the computer or onto the TV? Because the only advantage I see that has over an on-demand service is netflix has a greater movie library.Well when I watch it, I watch it on my computer. There really not much on it I like besides the old Doctor Whos and some old anime.
When I go click on it here a list of the new movies Cashback, The Year my Parents went on, Chop Shop, Never Forever, and the wild Parrots of telegraph hill. I have never heard of any of those.
But getting Netflix DVDs beats Blockbuster anyday of the week my wife watches Bollywood ,I watch the anime and I get a lot of kids movies for my kids.
[QUOTE="LEGEND_C4A"][QUOTE="Paul_Phoenicks"]It's not like Netflix won't start stocking Blu Ray movies... I don't see how this is a "format war"?Bread_or_Decide
true, but i'll admit this, if I have an option of paying 15-20 bucks a month, whatever netflix charges, and I can watch any movie I want any time, I rather do that than spend 20-35 bucks a pop for a dvd or b-ray movie. I'll miss the extras on the disk, but honestly how many people even pay attention to the extras, and how many people actually watch the extras more than once?
You can rent the extras disc as well as the main feature.
yeah, how silly of me not to think of that? sorry I just woke up, lol.

I love this, no anger, no name calling, maybe we should always just talk about netflix and not video games, lol.
I don't think I've ever seen a post in this site with people agreeing and disagreeing about things and not hating each other.

I use to be like you and care about my DVDs. After having Netflix for so many years I can't tell you the last time I bought a DVD. It really is nice just ordering anything you want. Watching whole seasons of shows or really rare movies. I have more than once though of just selling off my DVDs because of the space they take.

yes, I love my DVD's thats a lot of money I put into it. I don't have as many as other people, just about 200, but when netflix launches, I'm done spending money on DVD's, well maybe.
shoot, gamefly is saving my ass when it comes to saving some money, even though I still spend 1000's a year on my system, I can only imagine how much more I'm saving cause of gamefly.
[QUOTE="dabigsiebowski"]Digital downloads are becoming vastly popular now with Itunes, Netflix, and Gametap and even the Wii. Do you think Microsoft just started another format war? Now giving the facts that Blu Ray is 1080P and thats a rather big file for a download. But what I also find interesting is a hard drive has a lot faster load times than a Blu Ray. This is going to be a gigantic battle this generation considering Blu Ray has already takin out HD DVD. Whats your thaughts?micky4889
Digital downloads will not take over for blu-ray/dvd although they will be popular
1) people always feel the need to own a copy on a media they can take with them and call their own just look at the CD its still around despite the Internet filled with sites where you can download cheap mp3s
2) Internet speeds just are not there to allow Digital downloads to become mainstream just go to speed test .net where the average speed in the U.S is only 4mb, 3mb europe
I prefer mp3 to cd man, I buy 5 cds a year, I buy 50 albums worth of mp3s and I'm being light
I could care less about owning a hard copy of a movie, I prefer to own the file on a HDD. Besides, I already own over 600 dvds so I really see no need to collect more of them. Ieven have 30 HDDVDs and while they were great at first, I just don't see a big enough difference to justify buying more into bluray than I have already

Yeah and I was at best buy and target yesterday and Blu Ray movies are just really expensive. I wonder what the cost is for just the disc itself.
