I'm not trying to flame or anything. But I have been looking into this but I mean PC Gaming is like a foreign country to a person who has been a console gamer all their life. So I'm wondering what makes it worth me building a rig, and just you know start PC gaming besides mods, graphics and emulators.

first and foremost, the ability to play any game that was ever released on it, with a little but of effort. the fact that actual communities exist, many in fact within each game

more exclusives, games are much cheaper, steam, sales, infinite backwards compatibility, better and more variety of controls, non gaming tasks, greater control over the game.

And Console gaming is a foreign country to a person who has been a pc gamer all their life. Whats the point in buying a console for any reason then? Don't say for the games because you don't seem to be saying that for pc gaming. So consoles can't do anything...but PC's can do mods, has better graphics and emulators. With that out of the way... If you like the VIDEO GAMES on the PC and the fact that the PC can do more than just play those games then you should go build yourself a gaming rig, it will last you longer and after your first build you could just upgrade from then on as you need to.

Lol I realize the tight spot I put PC gaming fans in but I really want to be convinced. Because I have looked up mods and a lot of them were like so so. Maybe I'm looking at this the wrong way.

heres a list of pros and cons imho (form someone who plays both..but who does prefer the PC for what its worth) Pros: 1) Games look better (hardware willing) 2) games are cheaper (sometimes much cheaper) 3) games load faster 4) games run better (hardware willing) 5) any controller can be used with the PC (though i prefer mouse and ksyboard for most games) 6) games have mods and expansions 7) its BC is second to none 8) it has many great exclusives...there just not highly publicised blockbusters. cons: 1) they require a greater initial outlay of cash. they dont need the 5000 that some would suggest....but ideally you should spend about 1000 (more if you need a monitor...and dont skimp on the monitor). you can get console beating performance for a fair bit less...but a grand will get you a great PC. 2) there more complicated to use. PC are improving alot in this area (kudos to MS...win 7 is pretty darn good) but compared to a console...they do require more care. 3) not the greatest platform for simple pick up and play. you cant just bop the disc in and off you go. games must be installed and then patched and you may need to set up an account with the publisher to get all the extras and so on. sometimes it can be a bit of a faf. 4) DRM. most companies have reasonable DRM but others, like ubisoft, have completly idiotic DRM. sometimes it can get pretty nasty.

The funny thing about this kind of discussion is that consolites will believe that their games(exclusives) are the best, and that owning something popular and accesible means something to hermits. On the other hand hermits will believe that their exclusives are the best and that owning something highly customizable and complex means something to consolites.

Fewer great games, but the great ones can be played for years. Companies like Valve and Blizzard support the heck out of their games and it shows. Blizzard even patched Warcraft 3 a few months ago. Team Fortress 2 is still getting updates on the PC. Keyboard and mouse work great for first-person shooters (once you get used to it.) The shutting down of the original XBOX live service is just such an odd thing to see from a pc gamer's perspective. I can STILL pop into the original Counter-Strike and play if I want to.

I enjoy console gaming, but the games that hook me in the most are definitely on the PC.

It's no secret I like flight sims.

The way I game may not appeal to everyone. But, I like to game with connections to my real-world job. For instance, take FSX:

I can load up real-world conditions in the game.

Take the weather conditions at Quillayute Airport, Washington (KUIL)

Load it up in FSX automatically:

and......

Or..... make my own weather like say add thunderstorms to the area via Advanced Weather in FSX:

.......and voila! Buildups in the area:

That's the kind of customization I enjoy in PC gaming. They follow real-world rules, real-world physics. Someday, similar capabilities will come to consoles. Only then will I shift my gaming totally to consoles.

I dont think we can include the ability to play emulators or games desgnied for use on anything before 2005. Other wise that would be b/c and wed have to compare pc against the entire playstation, nin and xbox

The sheer variety of games - undoubtedly amazing, and is well beyond any gaming system. Quite simply I am never going to play a game like The Void, Dwarf Fortress, EVE Online or ArmA 2 on a console. The communities; If there is a game, there will be a community for it. The online connectivity. The amazing amount of user made content; from independent games to total modifications. This cannot be understated. The tools given to the players themselves to create - from NWN's toolset, to Crysis's sandbox 2, or Epic's UDK - it is nothing short of amazing. The amount of games, that are playable on the system, backwards compatibility cannot be understated. ( I suppose Emulation could fall under that category too, if you like TC) The open flexibility of the system (software); I can edit my games; personalize etc. From adding 'full HD' widescreen resolutions to classic games from 1997, a simple edit to remove a games forced introduction cut scenes, or using a Wiimote to play Half Life 2; it is so far reaching. The hardware options; so much choice is never, ever a bad thing. The price and availability of games. Not having a centralized service is fantastic; the availability of games and individual pricing is another great perk; who doesn't like good games for low prices? And of course having a good PC for gaming is beneficial in general, considering all the general, social, entertainment and work associated with computing. - Anyway I think that is about it; it is pretty much why I still game predominantly on the PC, despite being an avid console gamer too.

Games you can't play on consoles. Mods, superior graphics or better controls are all nice, but in the end it always boils down to games and the question if there are enough of them that interest you.

Blue Screen of Death. Glitches and installation fails. Can't play "x" game because of your graphic card, PIRACY although most PC users love that last one.

BSOD, glitches and installation fails can often be caused by end user hardware/software conflicts, meaning it's different for everybody.

Meh, piracy has always been a problem, on both consoles and PC.

By similar logic most console users love pre owned games. $5aud off for a second hand copy? Awesome!

The amount of piracy on the PC cannot be compared to the consoles. Why? It is many times of that of it's profitable cousin. It is like a 50 to 1 thing.

The amount of piracy on the PC cannot be compared to the consoles. Why? It is many times of that of it's profitable cousin. It is like a 50 to 1 thing.IWKYB
You're forgetting pre-owned games, which cause quite a bit of damage too (and are pretty much only a console thing.)

Blue Screen of Death. Glitches and installation fails. Can't play "x" game because of your graphic card, PIRACY although most PC users love that last one.

RROD, console games have plenty of glitches, thats your fault, consoles get plenty of piracy also.

preowned game market is quite large too, put that on top of the consoles piracy. PC games may have more piracy but the preowned sales are practically nonexistent.

This has nothing to do with with that the TC said... Why you're even talking about it in this topic?
