Most of the time when people mention the Crysis series they always talk about the graphics, which, I will admit, look pretty damn awesome; all of them. However, they also talk about how it's all flashy graphics with no real substance or good gameplay, except mostly for the second and third game is where the shallowness kicked in for some. How about the original Crysis? Besides it's graphics (which by today's standards have perhaps degraded a little bit) does the gameplay hold up after all these years or is it just as shallow as it's sequel brethern?

From what little I played of Crysis the gameplay, for me, was really spectacular. The gunplay was great, it felt smooth, natural, and just had this sense of fluidity to it and never felt clunky once. The suit power was something different for the FPS genre for me (I'm sure I'll be corrected but I hadn't played any FPS before it with these kinds of mechanics so it was a new experience for me) and were all also excellent and very fun to use (although Cloaking might have been a little overpowered at some points). I loved the island as well, with it's open ended nature as opposed to the usual FPS standard of a linear corridor shooter. Yeah, it still was linear in the sense that you always had a mission to get to and there were not many side missions to do outside of going from A to B in terms of mission structure but I didn't mind. There were still plenty of enemy camps to keep me satisfied at going and destroying everything and with the suit power ups you could go in anyway you liked (although Cloaking was used for a majority of the camps). Great game and gunplay as well as fun to use powers that gave exploration and combat a bit more flavor with a verly big island that allowed for lots of exploration to be had, I heavily enjoyed the game outside of maybe a few shortcomings here and there.

Of course, that's just me. What about you? What were your thoughts on the original Crysis besides it's pretty damn good graphics that everyone keeps chattering about? Like the game play, dislike the gameplay? Discuss.

Great game. Gameplay was nice and varied, but the story took a nosedive around halfway through.

One of the best FPS campaigns this gen. Gameplay and level design allows for lots of replayability and the suit powers make combat even more interesting. Guns and shooting feel great. Only bad part about it is the story, but it was passable as far as military shooters go.

To me it felt like a mashup of Halo and CoD, only without the memorable characters and storyline of the former and the decent gunplay and set pieces of the latter. Only thing it has going for it is its non-linear play style imo.

Bought Crysis 1 on PSN in 2011.  One of the most boring games Ive ever played.

Feels like a tech demo, and overall a game that serves no real purpose in existing other than as a benchmark for GPUs.  Most generic story, campaign, etc... pretty much every negative stereotype surrounding generic FPS, etc.

being able to destroy buildings, etc was fun, as well as the sandbox structure of the game, but that gets old after 2 hours.  Would not buy again. Oh, and the graphics are terrible on the PS3 version.

Yeah, and even the destructibility of buildings was done a 1000x better in Bad Company 1 AND 2.

No way. Considering how open the world was, the AI was quite exceptional. Sure, you can find videos of the AI bugging out, but in actual gameplay playthrough, I had no problems with the AI.

I found that the gameplay was pretty boring. Big open spaces with a whole lot of nothing. Bad AI and not a lot of guns to choose from. Everything falls apart when the aliens appear. It looks awesome but the gameplay just falls apart.

The gunplay feels no different than any generic MMS, the story was completely forgettable/worthless, sound design is wimpy, and the enemies are never mixed/work with different types. It's just a boring game.

The gunplay is dated and the story is crap but the graphics are great with mods. Frankly, it's a bit boring by today's standards but it's still a decent game.

Graphics were revolutionary, open world was nice, gameplay was mediocre. Personally I had more fun with Crysis 2 (not saying that crysis 2 was the better game).

It's a very fun singleplayer FPS in my opinion.

Playing with the Nanosuit to me was very fun, and I felt that there are quite a few situations where you had to juggle between Nanosuit modes to ensure your survival.

I tried that in-game. I couldn't get aboard the boat when it's occupied. My guess is someone used a cheat like no-clip to get on board.

That video is BS. This is what it's really like:

Eh. It was entertaining as a stealth sandbox thing, but I never thought the actual shooting was very fun, and the whole back third of the game is kinda bad. I didn't find Crysis 1 and 2 to be poles apart in quality, really, despite the hand-holding in 2. Far Cry 3 did nearly everything better.

Graphicswise, I hated the shacks. The lighting and textures sucked. I also disliked the level Ascension. I wish Crystek would make a CryEngine 3 version for the PC, I'd buy it:

Yeah, I have spent several hours just doing the same sections throughout the game over and over with different tactics and the AI was always competent. The part of the fun in the fact that the AI is actually pretty good and will respond differently depending on what you're doing. This is a huge contrast to your typical trashtastic shooter campaigns where the same enemies get in the same cover every time you play and there is no variability.

Crysis (the PC version) is the best PC game this gen.

It won Shooter of the year in 07, across all platforms for a reason. Beat out CoD 4 and Halo 3

It owns

Let me guess, you like point A to point B linear type games. Console mindset infecting the PC, only ones I hear that say the original Crysis was boring are ex console players that switched to PC gaming only for the graphics.

Crysis 3 is a step back from Crysis 1. Worse physics, Crysis still has the best destructibility in the series. Less suit powers, Crysis 1 gave a ton of options The suit in Crysis was 1 was also way more badass, it was slick and not overweight/thick like in 2/3.

A fairly average game. AI was horrendous when it was first released and the game became very boring towards the end. A solid game though and easily better than the next two sequels.

This. Crysis 3, aside from its multiplayer is the worst Crysis in the series. Best Crysis goes in this order, 1, 2 and a distant 3.

I played at launch on Delta (hardest difficulty) and have never seen this showing of "dumb AI" many of you post. Gamespot gave this game a 9.5 and one of their praises were how good the AI was, soooo yeah.

Probably in that it didn't hold his hand and that you actually have to commute to each checkpoint all while having the benefit to do whatever you want in the game.

The original crysis was good fun that gave you more free roaming and quite a bit of choice on how to approach situations. It had pacing issues near the end, got more straightforward, and even more monotonous on the enemy waves, but overall it was still over the top and fun through out.

The only I thing I wished the original Crysis had during its alien section were ground variants. That would have mixed up the combat a ton instead of just targeting soley air targets.

Yeah, the alien parts in Crysis were epic. I'm surprised many didn't like them. I'm pissed Crytek didn't continue from the events from the end of Crysis 1, 2/3 were pretty much a reboot.

One thing I like about the Crysis games is the variety of ways I approach the gameplay. Here, in Warhead, I used only a gauss rigfle and no cloaking. I wanted to be Elmer Fudd. But, I'm hunting aliens intead of wabbits.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the registered version of FRAPS at the time. So, I had to stitch a bunch of 30-sec clips together.

Cloak was definitely the most overpowered ability in that game by far. Armor skin as well imo.

You also have the freedom to play it like a generic FPS, that is, not use the cloak. It (actually all the Crysis games) gets much harder then.

The game play is pretty awesome, especially in the first half; I played those first levels over and over again. The second half is decent, but it's nowhere near the first half.

Defensive much?

Anyways, to the other person that wasn't passive aggressively drawing stupid assumptions, it just wasn't very fun and took a long time to do the things in the Crysis stories that people used to share when the game was hot topic.
