Most of the time when people mention the Crysis series they always talk about the graphics, which, I will admit, look pretty damn awesome; all of them. However, they also talk about how it's all flashy graphics with no real substance or good gameplay, except mostly for the second and third game is where the shallowness kicked in for some. How about the original Crysis? Besides it's graphics (which by today's standards have perhaps degraded a little bit) does the gameplay hold up after all these years or is it just as shallow as it's sequel brethern?
From what little I played of Crysis the gameplay, for me, was really spectacular. The gunplay was great, it felt smooth, natural, and just had this sense of fluidity to it and never felt clunky once. The suit power was something different for the FPS genre for me (I'm sure I'll be corrected but I hadn't played any FPS before it with these kinds of mechanics so it was a new experience for me) and were all also excellent and very fun to use (although Cloaking might have been a little overpowered at some points). I loved the island as well, with it's open ended nature as opposed to the usual FPS standard of a linear corridor shooter. Yeah, it still was linear in the sense that you always had a mission to get to and there were not many side missions to do outside of going from A to B in terms of mission structure but I didn't mind. There were still plenty of enemy camps to keep me satisfied at going and destroying everything and with the suit power ups you could go in anyway you liked (although Cloaking was used for a majority of the camps). Great game and gunplay as well as fun to use powers that gave exploration and combat a bit more flavor with a verly big island that allowed for lots of exploration to be had, I heavily enjoyed the game outside of maybe a few shortcomings here and there.
Of course, that's just me. What about you? What were your thoughts on the original Crysis besides it's pretty damn good graphics that everyone keeps chattering about? Like the game play, dislike the gameplay? Discuss.
