I really just cant stand the KH games. I played the entirety of the first game out of some dumb loyalty for Square. I had enjoyed just about every game they made up to that point, so I figured they could do no wrong. Little did I know that KH was just the first among many games that would ultimately decimate my respect for the company. I was given a free copy of KH2 back when it came out, gave it a try and simply couldn't stomach the experience. More of the same old button mashing gameplay and it seemed like the writing actually got worse.
I haven't tried a KH game since, but somehow I doubt much has changed. I really cant think of any redeeming qualities from what I've played.

II loved the combat in KH... The button mashing complaint never really made sense to me, because honestly thats all you really did in any final fantasy game up until that point except for in boss fights.. Just go into a random battle and just keep tapping the circle button and then theyd die. The only time you ever had to really worry about anything else like managing summons and spells and cures was fighting bosses, which is the same in KH you aren't just mashing buttons against bosses either.

In an action oriented game I just prefer a little more meaning behind the buttons I'm pushing. It makes the gameplay much more interesting when there is an essence of sequence or timing involved.
It doesn't bother me nearly as much in FF since its not really action oriented, but even so its not something I enjoy in those games either tbh.
How could I forget about Vampire?I don't agree. I think Ys games, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, Tales of Symphonia, Jade Empire, Diablo, and Dark Cloud 2 are all better.......There's really tons of action rpgs I like more than Kingdom hearts
Luxen90
Action RPG is a confusing and pointless subgenre. Cherokee_Jackagreed. Every action game on the market has some RPG elements today. Genres don't work as well for categorizing video games as they do movies and music. for example Batman Arkham Asylum would fall into 5 caterygories: A Third-Person Action Stealth Adventure RPG. So you have to be pretty specific when comparing games in certain "genres".
EDIT: To answer the question though my favorite game that largely only focuses on Action and RPG elements would have to be Mass Effect but I still need to play Muramasa, Kingdom Hearts, and Xenoblade and they all look brilliant.
The Witcher.
Anyone who says any game besides Diablo franchise is not a gamer. :D
sethman410
Or just don't likeboring dungeon crawlers :D
Jade empire.
It was diffrent, undeerappreciated, solid gameplay and a change of fresh air in terms of mythology and all the rest of it.
Such a shae Bioware are more bothered bout DA and Mass Effect to give JE2 a lookover. It deserves a sequel more than DA and ME put together imo.
Looking at some choices in this thread, aparently this beauty counts as well,so forget about D2 and M&B.../thread,no comeback possible Vesica.

It´s really up there with the best, the only reason it didn´t got higher scores was because of some really nasty bugs and some game breaking situations. Most of the problems(if not all)were fixed by the comunity.
You should really try it,it´s quite the unique game, the atmosphere is simply amazing and there´s nothing like it,the whole concept around the vampire mythology is great and all classes play completely diferent(way beyond mere stats diferences like in most games),among many other things that make VTMB a great game and one of the best RPG´s ever made.
You should really try it Vesica, get it on steam now, damnit!
Best 20€ you will ever spend. :P

Nevermind, you already said. I just can't get past the gameplay and boring quests.

I never thought the quests were boring,at least most of them. I guess the setting and the atmosphere got me by the b***s,I loved it. Besides,I really like the theme of the game, and the very mature style of it was something that you usually never really saw on a videogame. It had quite a few gameplay issues back when it came out but now it´s just fine. For me its Demons Souls easily. The depth of gameplay, great action combat system and excellent online system forms together a great rewarding experience. I would say something like Gothic 3 or Diablo 2 before I played Demons Souls, but honestly its Demons Souls by far.

All I can say is "Planescape: Torment". I want my internets now plz.since i haven't played kingdom hearts 2 final mix, it's kingdom hearts 2 for me. What an amazing game it was
Can't agree with the TC since there are elements to KH2's gameplay system that are superfluous and exist, more or less, to make the game look "flashy." Although FM+ is awesome, it's a shame S-E has never gone through the effort to have it localized in the western gaming sphere.
In the meantime, I'm really looking forward to FFvXIII. I honestly believe S-E needs to pursue making games with that gameplay model, similar to the one present in KH. There's sizable potential for a new IP in that corner of the market and nobody is fully taking advantage of the genre at the moment.
I own both KH but have only played a little of the first so far. It has its perks & an interesting combat system but it hasn't hooked me in. Does the story surrounding Sora & his two friends (the 'rival' & the girl, can't remember the names) have some dark twist or anything? I always got the feeling that his rival would turn out to be bad in some way, & that the girl would be torn between the two.. Is it anything like that? That sounds interesting.
Anyway, personally my favourite action RPG is NIER. Incredible story, the best this generation in my opinion (once you've played through all the endings). I just can't understand why it hasn't received particularly good critical reception, especially Gamespots score. I loved everything about that game, enough to spend 92 hours with it getting 100% & buying the DLC which didn't really add to the story or any achievements, but I don't regret buying it at all (getting to see what the younger Nier looks like & hearing the remixed music was easily worth the money). I really can't praise this game enough, it probably ranks in my top 3 games this generation.
Edit: I consider Zelda action-adventure, not action-rpg.
Actually what I feel is that there hasn't been a really good action RPG. Some were too RPG and number-ey for me like Diablo 2 and some were too action-y.
If i had to pick one though I'd go with Deus Ex. or System Shock 2.
[QUOTE="Wanderer5"]Needs more Secret of Mana love. This thread needs more Ys love...

Can't believe I forgot about this one. Incredible game. Ah, how I miss those SNES days.
The Ys series is pretty good. There isn't a Ys game I would call amazing, but yeah, it's a solid series, imo.

Unfortunatedly,I believe you can´t get it anywhere as far as DD goes,EA controls the franchise now and they haven´t released any version of SS2 ever since.

You can get the retail version there though,as well as in many other similar sites,so it´s not that hard to find, but it´s not chap,at all...

i would've never guessed.
mine would probably have to be Kingdom Hearts II even if it the combat was extremely simplistic.

Thanks, thanks to Arto as well. I have ordered a retail version now (found one on Amazon.co.uk, for a reasonable price), hopefully it will be in the mail around monday. You are right it is not cheap at all, but this game should be more than worth the money spent.
I am actually pretty upset with EA that they wont re-release that game and the Ultima collection, not even on EA store. Anyway, thanks again.
