What's the best Competive Online Shooter this gen so far?

I don't exactly know myself, I've played Halo 3, Team Fortress 2, and a little bit of Warhawk. Of those three I think Halo 3 is the best.

I also played the Killzone 2 demo, but the button lag is annoying enough to me that I think it's safe to say it's not the best.

Also, please don't just respond with the shooter you think is the best. Give some reasons why you think it's the best.

(I guess I'm being a hypocritical, so I'll tell why I thought Halo was the best.)

Halo 3, I thought, was the best of the shooters I've played just because of sheer customization options. Also, sometimes simplicity is a good thing - it doesn't have a host of hard to control vehicles like Warhawk, and they don't have to constantly balance clas ses like Team Fortress 2.

I've played Halo 3 and TF2, and my personal opinions on both are this

In TF2 when you have a team that's willing to try to win, and uses teamwork, and they're all pretty good at their class then that game is incredibly fun, but for me that's about 1% of the time I played, so now I dread seeing the game though I hope daily that all new DLC gives the game a better foundation.

In Halo 3 there isn't actually a huge reliance on team mate skill in some cases, so you can easily hop in and play, but there's pretty bad problems with things like spawning, and matchmaking that can make it frustrating at times.

Personally for me if you've got some friends TF2 wins, but if you just want to play by yourself, and hop into a game I'd put Halo 3 above most stuff. I'm just really anxious to sit down and play an online FPS with no problems (that isn't CS 1.6 before anyone brings that up :P)

So, why did you guys pick what you did?

Why are they better than other shooters?

(Obviously those of you who can't decide which one is the best don't have to respond.)

Team Fortress 2 All the Way. Probably the best multiplayer game this gen as well.

Team Fortress 2 has the most variety out of any shooters I have played, and has so many different dynamics all working together.

Add in all the constant updates and content all added for FREE, and it's hard to find a game that compares.

SOCOM, Halo 3, and TF 2 are among the best this gen in terms of competitive shooters. To the poster "Trinners", Halo 3 can be VERY competitive. Play 4vs4 MLG rules with high levels and you'll see what I mean. It can get serious. But, overall IMO i'd have to say socom. No online shooter speaks hard-pounding, heart racing, last man alive vs 5 guys, no respawn action like SOCOM. :)

KZ2. Great gameplay + good community + little to no lag = win. COD4 was also great, and so was Halo 3.

Her name is Boxxy.

and i'll add SOCOM as well. Tactical shooters are far more competitive than arcade shooters.

CS 1.3 or CS 1.6 is still the FPS king though.

IMO without in-game Clan support a game cannot be truly competitive. It always just boils down to individuals choosing to chat or not.

So true. I think what kills most games nowadays is all these DLC expansions. It segregates the gaming community because now the people that bought the DLC are all playing the DLC maps, and people who didnt cant join in. Pretty soon, the people who didnt buy the DLC will just stop playing the game and there will be less players online, and then the people who bought the DLC will also stop playing due to lack of players. I think they should stop with the DLC and either release a sequel or a huge expansion pack in HARD COPY as well as digital once ever 1-2 years. I cant stress this enough HARD COPIES are very important! I know a lot of college students who don't buy DLC simply because they don't have access to a credit card and they arent in an area that sells those game cards. Release all the accumulated DLC on a disk annually/biannually and I guarantee you it will get a more customers.

If the DLC is free... Then it shouldn't be a problem. If you think that the cost of DLC is a problem for the developers, then subscription fees are in order. 50 cents a month for Warhawk should cover development costs ($6 a year)

Halo 3, by far. Anyone who says it isn't ONE of the best is either ignorant or a blind fanboy. However, you can agree it may not be the best. The gameplay stays infinitly fun and exciting, there's lots of playlists which help shake it up and there's even dedicated "hardcore", competetive playlists. Other notable mentions are CoD4 (on certain playlists), Killzone 2 and TF2 (on PC).

I really do wish DLC were free, but everyone hates subscription costs...no matter how little. I think a better solution would be to have adverts in the game. Have the entire game funded by adverts thus allowing the DLC to be free and the devs to make more money for their extra work.

Adverts are actually a pretty good option, especially since there are loading times anyway. Not a bad idea, especially if the game is popular. Unfortunately, I can't really think of how they can have product placement for most of the popular games - could you imagine Coca Cola signs being all over Mars in Killzone 2?

most competitive? halo 3, hands down. only console game with competitions up to 300 thousand bucks on console right now. Also the most players, and def. alot of skilled people. And to the guy that said halo 3 is more "run alone". You sir, must suck at that game, or your adversaries, if you think Halo 3 is easy alone.

well im seeing a lot of Halo 3s, Killzone 2s, and CoD4s. Have not fully played Halo 3 and never will, havn't played KZ2 YET, but CoD4 I can relate to because I have CoD5. So that is what I'm saying... the Call of Duty series is good for online, and it might not be the MOST competitive but it's still fun and the online is a blast.

Mr_Nordquist

Yeah, if you're like a 10.

Halo 3 puts teamwork over individual skill. It's not like the previous Halo's were one man could just dominate by himself. You're only as good as your worst player in Halo 3.

Cod 4 is far too imbalanced to be competitive, I would have to say Halo 3 would be the best simply because of the teamwork required in the game, maybe GRAW too..

Every competitive FPS is supposed to be like that from the beggining.
