IMO Rare, never seen a developer put out that many incredible games in one generation for the N64. Also consider that back in the 90s/early 00s, GameSpot reviewed with higher standards. I'd guss that both the 9.8 and 9.9 would be 10s now, with maybe another game having a shot as well.

Goldeneye (launch title) (9.8)

Banjo Kazoie (9.5)

Banjo Tooie (9.6)

Donky Kong 64 (9.0)

Perfect Dark (9.9)

Conker's Bad Fur Day (9.3)

As well as Jet Force Gemini (8.8), Killer Instinct (7.4), Diddy Kong Racing (6.6 - What's up with GameSpot hating kart racers, like Mario Kart, this gen?).

HM: Blizzard, Valve, Bungie, Rockstar, etc. as they are all arguably still producing top notch games (GameSpot score-wise).

I agree. Rare was so good back in the 90s. They also had a title called Blast Corps that was really fun. Its a shame they only make Kinect shovelware garbage now

Black Isle. They came out with the first two Fallouts and Planescape: Torment at a Call of Duty like pace.

Free Radical Design - Had the best members of Rare from when Rare was at it's prime, and created the best shooter series out there: Timesplitters.

It's kind of hard to compare now and then because the development process is so different. Now games take much longer to make and require a lot more people. Something like Rare will never be repeated again just due to the fact it takes a lot longer to make a game now a days. I'm sure if you could make games as fast as Rare could in the N64 days, we'd find several devs as talented as them.

Why? Developers just need to make compromises with graphics.

Terraria took 5 months to develop and it's a brilliant game.

Bullfrog was the best probably in their prime which was early to mid 1990s, they made most of the games I still enjoy. Seems crazy though peter molyneux was behind so many classics, yet now he's turned into pretty terrible game developer. Reminds me of George Lucas and Spielberg, how he was great ones, but is a giant hack now.

I'd say that Valve and Rockstar are the most consistent developers. I'm pretty confident that they won't screw anything up.

Ha, exactly what I was thinking.

As for the has beens though, probably Squaresoft. Used to release top notch games at an incredibly fast pace, now they release mediocre to average games at an insanely slow pace.

Goldeneye hasnt aged well, its a terrible game these days, Perfect Dark was unplayble with its god awful framerate, it did not deserve a 9.9 since they put graphics over gameplay, i mean who cares if it runs at 10fps? as long as it has good graphics right?

other than that, Rare were god tier

I love seeing Bullfrog and Black Isle mentioned. I'm so happy there are still gamers who remember more than COD. Shiny was promising as well but never had much of a chance to show themselves in modern days. I feel that Matrix license killed them.

^^ while in not a big fan of rockstar games...they are always quality

valve always redefines the fps genre with the new major half life releases...and its source engine alone is enough to make it in the tops of the community

Nintendo lost money in 2011.

It's been 100 years. Nintendo is on its way out.

I know your joking but Nintendo has enough money to get through atleast most of this century.

Link

"Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank - enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there's almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out - we're in the year 2075 by this point - they've got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business."

Nintendo has more then $35,000,000,000 as of the end of 2011.

Edit* On topic I would probably say maybe Black Isle, Westwood, or Rareware.

I curse Moly every day for abandoning the Bullfrog ideal to start creating mediocre games.. I want my Dungeon Keeper and Populous games back! Then there is alot of one hit wonder games out there that never really have any other games quite like it during hte late 90s early 2000.. Those being games like Sacrifice, Giants Citizen Kuboto, Heavy Gear 2, Freespace 2.. Etc etc..

Dude, it's Nintendo. Obviously. We can't forget that the company exists as a developer themselves. Not only a hardware manufacterer.

However if we want to stay aware from them and stick to third parties then I would probably have to agree with you on Rare. Their N64 era was rife with a ridiculous amount of triple A games. Also Blizzard and Capcom come to mind.

Just to clarify, I only put Rare above the likes of Blizzard/Valve because I believe their games were slightly better, in a much more condensed amount of time. Blizzard and Valve have consistently released quality games, but they take much longer to do so. Rare was pumping out AAA games every single year.

The only reason I wanted to stay away from Nintendo is that it says in their prime meaning that the developer we are talking about isn't still making quality games. That is why I didn't mention Nintendo was because they have constantly made great games from 1980-present day. So they are still in their prime and haven't left their prime yet.

It's pretty hard to go with anyone other than Blizzard. They have been "in their prime" for going on 2 decades now...

It's hard to argue with that level of consistency.

Is there any other developer than controls the Gold Standard title in THREE separate genres like Blizzard does?

Pretty much this. Well, them and Nintendo. And so glad I've seen so few mentions of Valve and no mentions of Naughty Dog whatsoever. Plus love for Black Isle and the like? :o Maybe there is hope for this forum after all.

I still need to play some Black Isle games. I got Fallout 1 (from gog.com when it was Free) But I won't have time to play it until April 27th when I'm done with this semester but I did mention them based on Review Scores and how many games they released in such a short amount of time that all got good reviews.
