Soul Caliber for dreamcast. A great fighting game has to have great characters, cool moves, be easy enough to pick up and play right off, but hard enough to require some skill to do complex moves and have a decent story. Soul Caliber not only looked awesome at the time, but still has the best characters of any fighting game to date. The characters also had weapons, which made for some badass moves like when Ivy's sword exploded and then came back together or when Yoshimitsu used his sword to fly with like a helicopter. SC>>>all
While I do like the Soul Calibur series a lot, (I mean, Cervantes is frikkin' awesome) it was the kind of game where mindless button mashing was far too effective. Sometimes if I played with strategy in mind i'd get creamed, only to play the same fight by cheesing the same move over and over and win spectacularly. Of course it's possible to get so good at the game that this doesn't matter but to be honest I still think Tekken and Virtua Fighter are the crowning glories of the fighting genre.
I'm still probably getting SCIV though, it looks amazing. :)
Im a hardcore fighitng gamer and i cant just choose one, although i hate all 3d fighters (no depth imo) i got say the VF series is the best out of that catagory. Also SF 3rd Strike is the best SF imo. SSBM has a lot of depth to it, one of my all time favs, MVC2 is one of the most hectic and fastiest fighters ever, along with another one of my favorites, Darkstalkers. Thers so many, its hard to choose

Hurrah, someone agree's with me! SC is abused as a button masher mostly but most poeple do not play it propperly, the game is a huge mind game. The newer games have sped up so some of this is lost since i can't react to 4 frame moves 95% of the time(goddamn cassandra!!!) but I still do not lose to noobs.

The best fighting game of all time is a matter of opinion. Some people are into 2D fighters, some people are into 3D fighters, some people are into Soul Calibur, and some people are into SSB. I happen to be into SSB

The next GTA game may score 9.5 but be a lot better than GTA4. Old review scores mean nothing - standards are aways changing. I loved Tekken 3, btu it's been bested by DOA4 and VF5 (360 version)
