System Shock 2 is a fantastic game.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a great game.
BioShock is a really good game.
Fallout 3 is a good game.
Deus Ex is the greatest achievement in all of human civilization, a game whose creation caused the gods to bow down to man.
Deus Ex, followed by Fallout 3. System Shock 2 is very good too, but, *very* old school in its FPS mechanics. Bioshock was quite good, but the story turned downhill at a certain point. I haven't played the last one.
This should be an excellent Fanboy litmus test. PC fanatics will say SS2 and Deus Ex without fail, and console fanboys will say Fallout and Bioshock without fail.
I hate to choose between Deus Ex and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Deus Ex probably wins overall because it has somewhat more RPG elements, and the story is one of the best to this day. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was an unmatched experience though. Shooters have been so generic for so long, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. came along with an amazing environment and atmosphere, with highly effective survival and horror elements (some of the underground parts of SHOC rank up with Fatal Frame and Silent Hill 2 on the holy-god-that's-scary meter) that made it stand way out above the rest.
But yeah, Deus Ex.
FALLOUT 3?
Seriously?
DEUS EX, by a HUGE margin. followed by System Shock 2.
Fallout 3 quite frankly does not even compare, its more of an RPG in general, its shooter mechanics are *far less functional* than any of the other titles listed.
Its more of an action RPG if anything....
Otherwise Bioshock is damn good too..... however its more of a shooter.... more of a shooter than Fallout 3 is a FPSRPG. Then again this can cause question to what fits into RPG design as a whole.
And honestly I'd say its similar with STALKER too, despite it having an open world, available quests and inventory system and character statistics (which boil down to suits and artifacts). Technically an FPS RPG, heavier on the FPS.
To be honest titles like Boiling Point are more FPSRPG than most of the games listed.....
System Shock 2 was a little deeper than Bioshock, portraying the evils of both individualism (SHODAN) and collectivism (The Many). I still prefer Bioshock, though, just due to the better atmosphere and socioeconomic commentary.
Deus Ex is a remarkable game, and by far the best one out of the options given due to its unprecedented gameplay
System Shock 2 s an amazing game that very well blends FPS and RPG elements
STALKER is a very flawed, but compelling piece of software
BioShock is a well presented, and well made game that unfortunately suffers from mediocre gameplay
Fallout 3 is solid, but poorly written, lifeless, and very dull in places.
That's my order. I have no idea on how Deus Ex is not taking the lead.
the lot of you should try Arx Fatalis,it's a very solid, yet underrated First person RPG/Dungeon Crawl that came out a while back on the PC and Original Xbox.
Deus Ex for sure comes out on top with STALKER a close second. I absolutely adored STALKER.
Bioshock too would have an honorable mention, as well as Fallout 3, but they are not close to the best.
Does Valkyria Chronicles count?double_heist
VC is not a First Person RPG but instead,a very solid Turn Based Strategy/JRPG hybrid.
Had to debate with myself a bit over this, was between Deus Ex, and System Shock 2, which I ironicly replayied through last week (both of them).
When I playied those games It dawned on me, those two games in particular are almost identical in thier mechanics, Right down to the skills and upgrades you can get (not counting the PSI in SS2). The same kinds of character you have the ability to build, and I must say I freakin loved the way games were made back then
They have the same kind of "stats" and they move, play, and act the same way... (Deus ex being more refined then SS2, but not by much)
I ended up picking SS2, mainly because it was the first one, and the adition of PSI "magic" altho it was poorly implemented, and I liked the horror aspect ^^
Deus Ex.
Also, take Fallout 3 out of the poll. It fails at being either an RPG or an FPS. And yeah, mentioning it in the same sentence as Deus Ex, System Shock 2 and STALKER is kind of.... lol.
Such a hard choice between SS2 and STALKER. Ultimately I will go for STALKER today, but it's so close tomorrow I might choose differently :D
Altough the list is weird..STALKER hardly has any RPG elements, it's just open ended. Fallout3 is RPG with light FPS elements, not the other way around like SS2 or Deus Ex are. And with "RPG with light FPS elements" Vampire: Bloodlines blows Fallout3 away
Honestly I liked Fallout 3 at the start but once you get deeper into the world and characters its really "dull." The main story was also insanely bad and had one of the worst endings of this gen. The game does not compare to the first 2 in anyway in terms of great writing and interesting characters. The gameplay also gets repetitive and fails to keep me interested. Although Oblivion had alot of flaws I still kept my interest for a much longer period.
Bioshock? Not a role-playing game. No, choosing to harvest or save the little sisters does not count.
I started playing Deus Ex at the beginning but my sound card is so bad that I keep getting bad audio bugs:(
Never played System Shock
And STALKER is a great experience although not a heavy role-playing game it does have alot more role-playing then Bioshock which is the most overrated game this generation:?
Ummm ya a third person view which makes the game pretty much unplayable at times. Are you serious?Fallout 3 doesn't count as an FPSRPG because you can go into third person.
