When it comes to single-player mode, I think Half-Life 2 is still the best FPS.

Nothing beats Half-life in SP campaign. Too bad it's been over three years since episode 2. Valve thinks it's more important to give us Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Portal 2 and Dota 2 instead, I guess Counter-strike 2 is next...

Or a real sequel to Counter Strike. IMO I've played a lot of FPSes with better single player than Half Life and HL2. I just never found them very fun. If I had to choose one thing about PC that's overhyped, it would have be to HL easily.

I read about Tactical Intervention on IGN, it has the creator of CS behind it right ?
But Half-life isn't exclusive on PC :s. The first one came out on PS2 and the second one on PS3 and Xbox (360)

This is about best FPS today, not from bygone eras.
And maybe you were just playing hyperbole (or sarcasm), but I'll say it anyway, on basic principle because sometimes I do see people clinging to nostalgia with an irrational viewpoint. Shooters from 2 generations ago or older, be that Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, DOOM, Castle Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem (yes, even the almighty Duke) or what have you, just do not hold up by todays standards.
Never mind graphics, AI that was robotic, predictable or just non-existent, wonky controls prior to dual analog, and absense of physics will in no way measure up to what shooters today can deliver. No matter how nostalgic you are about shooters from "the good old days", they were good, but in proper context, they were good for their time.

Nothing comes close to it's excellence. On a smaller scale I'd have to say Counter Strike, but I still find Battlefield 2 to be the defining FPS.

Bad Company 2 is more balanced, the soldier kits make more sense, there's no overpowered weapons in BC 2 (in contrast with the PKM/G36E in BF 2), the respawn system in BC 2 and the spotting system increases the teamwork, the customization options are way more flexible. BF 2 is only better in the scale and the map designs.
To each his own. I liked BF2's kits more than BC2's. More roles to play, though it would be nice to have those customizable options that BC2 has (Like different scope and I believe different calibur bullets. Been awhile since I've played.) Helicopters and Jets were a defining feature too. Jets are f'ing scary to come across, and helicopters are fun to fight against. I suck at piloting both :P
As far as overpowered weapons, I don't think it's quite fair for the LMG in the Medic kit to have the accuracy it does. I was able to pick off a sniper in a tower. It's stupid to give a medic an LMG in the first place. I much prefer my overpowered L-85 from Battlefield 2. BF2 had spotting and squad respawn also. The Battlefield franchise needs a better communication system, though I've had better teamwork in BF2 and BC2 than any other game that actually has open voice chat. Except for MAG and CS:S.
The thing that makes a huge difference in these games is the destructible environments in BC2. Adds a whole new layer of depth to the playing field. Having to adapt your strategies to the changing environment. That's one reason I enjoyed BC2 so much. I enjoyed BF2 a ton too, but maybe BC2 a bit more.As a complete package, Reach. Single player, co-op campaign, firefight, 4 player split screen, system link, online with one person, online with 4 people on the same tv, all on offer. Graphics are very pretty, sound incredible, story good enough, gameplay just about perfect for what it is, there's forge and theatre and whatnot too, plus a massive community. Maybe each individual aspect could be beaten by a specific game, but as a whole I think Reach is untouchable.locopatho
This pretty much sums my thoughts up.

It creates a great way of clearing out buildings when campers are have the whole front door locked down.
You have two COD games in the poll... :|
Nah but IMO it's COD4 however I haven't played TF2 which I hear is very good and I will be getting it when I get my new laptop along with some other not so graphically demanding popular PC games.

Oddworld: Strangers Wrath FTW!
Eh, I'm just not much of a FPS guy. The only ones I usually enjoy are the ones that dont follow the routine formula. Strangers Wrath, Metroid Prime games, Portal, etc.
DraugenCP
Stranger's Wrath is actually an exceptionally good, albeit unconventional shooter. Glad someone mentioned it.
Glad to know I'm not the only person on earth that played it.
Horrible list... Where is Crysis? S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Modern Warfare 1? Bad Company 2? Battlefield 2? Team Fortress 2? All you have is some popular, casual titles.

Well I saw today as pretty recent but if it means games still being played then sure TF2 could be there

for me halo reach
Headpopper333
Halo is garbage compared to Call Of
Atleast Halo's enemies don't have the intelligince of targets like a shooting gallery
Black ops.dakan45
Must be a joke. The campaign is short, linear, with sub-zombie I.C. A.I., no replayable and with horrible cutscenes (next time hire Kijima, Treyarch). The graphics are mediocre, the animations plain bad and the sound is subpar.
The multiplayer is fun for a while, but has two problems: fisrt one, some other games did it better (Bad Company 2, maybe Reach), second one: doesn't work properly in PC.
I bought BO day one, at 61 €, and the multiplayer start to fail connecting to matches las Wednesday; and if you look at the Steam threads about the game are flooded with similar problems:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=997
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1582990&page=62
Black Ops isn't a polished product. Needs at least another 2-3 months of beta testing; the Black Ops developement (less than 2 years) was shorter than some betas from Blizzard games.
Forget about BO winning any award this year; is one of the most unpolished videogames released this year. Which is sadly taking in consideration that basically is a copy & paste with some refinements from their two latest iterations.

Although I have yet to see a 100% perfect FPS game, for afully immersible, PC, non-linear, non-run-and-shoot FPS Single Player, IMO, play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.Shadow of Chernobyl andthen compare..
I just wish S.T.A.L.K.E.R., (non-linear FPS/RPG, realistic weapons physics simulator, dynamic world/environment and characters, awesome sophisticatedAI),was a live and evolving MMOG world/environment where I couldtry to survivedayafter day forever!
Although I myself wouldn't goas far, I've read there are people (extreme fanatics IMO) who actually play live S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games in locations similar to/near Chernobyl! (paintball or lasertag, I believe). There is even an organizedS.T.A.L.K.E.R.-Fest! Ha!
I believe there really is something good/special (addictive/magical) about S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
