Any piece from the Broken Sword series. Absolute magic.
The Kotor Soundtrack. Also a masterpiece.
And I'll agree with Monkey Island - that soundtrack is really nice, jazzy, and fits the theme perfectly.

broken sword! ****in yes
I would go with Heroes of Might and Magic II for the PC, really old but really nice opera music. I think there are samples on Gamespot, one of their features; top musical scores of all time or something.
I also really like the music from WoW, its not in your face but really adds to the ambience of the game.
Well, game soundtracks is my subject. And I have to say, of all the soundtracks ever made so far is by far Donkey Kong Country 2's. I dare you to find a single tune thats even mediocre there. The most epic soundtrack created by far. From Hot Head Bop, Flight Of Zinger, Opening Screen, Klubbas Reville to Stickerbrush Symphony. The only soundtrack I can call flawless.
I also rank the Metroid franchise soundtrack high especially Brinstar Dephts, Kraid's Theme and the theme of super metroid.
Argh, I mean there are so many good classic games with awesome soundtracks, Banjo & Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Red Alert 2, Ristar, Conker, Mega Man 2, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Goof Troop, StarCraft, Warcraft 2, Goldeneye, Mario franchise, Secret Of Mana, Chrono Trigger and one of my favorite ( among all the others mentioned ) Turtles IV Turtles In Time.

What the hell. You freaking read my mind. I was going to say Donkey Kong Country 2, Metroid, and Banjo Kazooie!
Here are the songs I like:
Donkey Kong Country - Theme song and last boss
Donkey Kong Country 2 - Bramble and Bee Hive
Banjo Kazooie - Grunty's Lair, All 12 versions of it
Metroid - Kraid's song, Metroid Prime theme, Metroid Prime 2 theme, Ridley's song
This thread requires more Chrono Trigger.
I'd also like to recognize Metroid Prime for it's soundtrack, it really helped create atmosphere.
I'd have to go with the soundtracks for Halo :) Those are killer... Martin O' Donnell and Michael Salvatori have done a great job on the past three Halo games. Metal Gear Solid will probably come in at 2nd for me :) John Williams is one of the best modern composers of our era but, for some reason I don't think the music sometimes goes well with the in game moments in Metal Gear Solid.
mr-sheep
That's probably true, since John Williams doesn't compose for Metal Gear Solid.
I'm suprised nobody has mentioned these two yet:
Morrowind
World of Warcraft
Anyway, thinking off the top of my head, here's my list:
1. Halo 2 & 3
2. Morrowind (Great intro, should have used it for Oblivion too!)
3. Kameo
4. World of Warcraft
5. Condemned/Fear (Not as in complete track but are brilliant at creating a creepy atmosphere.)
EDIT: Oh yeah and for their time:
Bomberman (AMIGA)
James Pond: Robocod (AMIGA)
Bug Bomber (AMIGA)
Mario Kart (SNES)
FF7 (PS1)
Shame on all of you who included FFVII. That soundtrack is mediocre at best!Laserwolf65
Evryone is forgeting one of the best , to me the best made soundtrack for a video game Medal of honor series,, wow also has a very god sound track and course FF7 , i especialy like the winged angel remake from crisis core....
I was wondering why almost no one chose SSBB...then I realized that this thread was very old. :?
GTA: SA has the best soundtrack of all time.
Some of the best of all time-

And thats just a taster of which makes Final Fantasy have the best music of anygame.
besides all the great ones in alreayd mentioned in zeldas, FF's, etc
the best soundtrack goes to... Thrasher: skate & destroy, just cant beat it
Anything composed by Akira Yamaoka or Nobuo Uematsu. Even their less popular work is above the best work of many others.
Oh, and Guitar Hero: Metallica! Mother of Mercy!
Classic Megaman and Sonic (new and old, I quite like some of the lyrical scores made for their newer games) of course Metal Gear Solid, Mad World, No More Heroes, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Devil May Cry series, The World Ends With You, and Katamari Damacy.
favorite video game song ever
