Tie: Xenogears and BG2
Those games made me think differently about gaming. I could no longer stomach poor RPG's again; they ruined me to the genre.
Anyone who can answer this questionwhenasked is a noob gamer.
There is no way I could ever choose a single game as my favorite/best ever.
Maybe 1 per genre, but even then, it'd be hard.

how can i be a noob gamer? ive been gaming since playing my older brothers atari when i was like 4. im 30 years old now so i doubt im a noob gamer.

My personal best would be mgs3. I dont really have a favorite game but that would be the best. Im complicated like that.

Platformer: Super Mario Galaxy
First-Person Shooter: Team Fortress 2
Third-Person Shooter: Jet Force Gemini or Warhawk
Fighter: Super Smash Bros. Melee.
Stealth Action: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots or one of the Splinter Cell games.
Horror: Dead Space.
Sandbox: Grand Theft Auto IV or Infamous
Puzzle: Tetris or Mr.Driller.
MMO: Ragnarok Online
RPG:Demon's Souls.
Turn-Based RPG: Final Fantasy VII
RTS: Starcraft
I just made this list off the top of my head and it can change at any time.
Best? Hard to say. These one the ones that gave me the most memorable experience when I played them though...

Phatasy Star IV (Genesis)
Final Fantasy VII (PC version)
Half-Life (PC)
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind (PC)
Assassin's Creed II (PS3) (Could be because I just finished it recently, but I was amazed by the detailed world and great storytelling of this game.)
