Mass Effect for me.

Depends on who you ask.A series like Halodefinately has a rich universe with lots of detail if it has its own wiki.
Hmm I might have to check out the other titles (well may be not Halo Wars RTS on console doesn't cut it for me unless it offers M/KB support).Outside of Halo 1 (which I did enjoy) I haven't played another Halo title are they that good? (Story and character wise)[QUOTE="istreakforfood"]

Personally I loved the Halo trilogy.
Halo Wars and Halo ODST storywise they were meh.
ODST made it up by having a great cast of characters and its fun gameplay.

Outside of Halo 1 (which I did enjoy) I haven't played another Halo title are they that good? (Story and character wise)Yeah, they are pretty good. The characters are believeable and the dialogue is well written. It's not Shakespeare, but it works. Also, the in game stories are above average. It's the universe and mythology that's really exceptional, however. There is so much lore and backstory and detail that 100s upon 100s of stories could be told on the world of Halo. The books, short movies and anime, and other mediums of Halo all have fantastic stories, and really build up into this massive universe. It's a lot like Star Wars, in that sense.[QUOTE="SpiritOfFire117"]

Wow, a lot of information. I didn't know the Halo universe was so vast.So the culture, rights, perspectives, biology, religions and morals don't make them aliean?[QUOTE="dreman999"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"] Because it makes them feel like aliens? I don't know. It's better than having the universe being one giant melting pot of uniformity, with the exception of maybe the Krogans and the Hanar. DarkLink77
When is that ever explored outside of party specific dialogue? Or codexes?
I guess I'm just going to have to agree to disagree with most of the people in this thread. Mass Effect is a great series. Is it the best example of Sci-Fi in gaming? IMHO, no.
Everyone has a translator in mass effect, they mention it several times throughout the series. If you say so. Here's my thing. Let's use Dragon Age or Halo as an example. In Dragon Age, when you go to Orzammar, you can tell you're in a Dwarven city. The Dwarves talk like Dwarves, they think like Dwarves, their art is Dwarven, and just about every aspect of their society is based on their culture, which the game works effortlessly into the narrative. When you play Halo, you walk onto a Covenant ship, you can tell it's a Covenant ship. Their weapons feel alien, their armor feels alien, their tech is alien. All of the races in the Covenant feel unique. Elites and Brutes speak and handle themselves differently. Mass Effect does not do this as well. Illium doesn't feel Asari. Tuchanka feels Krogan, but I could see another race living there. I cannot see another race living in Orzammar. Again, all in my opinion. And You don't with Quarians and Krogan?[QUOTE="DarkLink77"][QUOTE="wolverine4262"] seriously? The whole series (especially the second) makes a point of stuff like this. Quarians life on the flotilla, krogans hatred of salarians, turians and humans mutual distrust....everything that happens keeps each races back stories in mind...dreman999
The Quarians suits, their names...vans and nar mean some thing you know. And their saying "keelah se'lai" , which is not translated because its meaning it too rough. Heck we went to their flotilla and saw all this stuff.
The Krogan and their nuclear winter home world. How they believe in strength through destruction and survival. That they must always test themselves in conflict. Heck, Warlord Orker on grunt recuit mission was the extreme on krogan beliefs.
The Bartarians omega, The Asari's Illium that at the pinnacle of art and technology. I'm sorry but if you look around ME2 has these other alien cultures that defined their races,
I know all of what you mentioned. I just think other games have done it better. I have no problem with a lot of the way Mass Effect does things (except planet scanning. That was an awful idea), but i don't think it is the zenith of Sci-fi in video games. I seem to be in the minority,[QUOTE="wolverine4262"]out of those: halo... the actual answer though is mass effectSpiritOfFire117
Pretty much this.
Also have to agree, though I would also have to place Halo and Half Life in a tie.
Deus Ex and System Shock I would say pretty much crap over all of those choices a part from HL and Warhammer. Starcraft is also decent, although it copies heavily from Aliens and Warhammer. Halo is not even Sci-FI imo, In that nothing in it is actually logical and makes sense. It's actually much more like Fantasy Sci-fi I guess , something you would expect to see in saturday morning cartoon. Mass Effect again, in the same boat as Halo. It's just not edgy enough.
Since I doubt anyone else has said it and I like to be unique, I guess I'll go with Star Ocean.jalexbrownThat star ocean....The one that put out Star Ocean 4 with the bad plot and the bad voice acting. Yet you hate on Mass Effect so much. .......... I don't even no what.....

I didn't say every game in the series was good, but just off of the first two games it manages to be one of my favorite sci-fi series'.
Saying anything but 40K just means your ignorant to the entire thing to be honest not a single one of the franchises you have mentioned even come close to 40K. In computer game terms im not so sure tho. Oh you said RTS in taht case i still give it to 40K Dawn of War is probably one of the best games i have ever played not just because of the setting its a true RTS with great mechanics.
[QUOTE="akbar13"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"]If you knew the story of Mass Effect you would know about universal translators. Sigh... that is a lazy excuse so BioWare doesn't have to invent any alien languages. I know about it. The game still suffers for it. And again, it is mentioned, I believe, in passing through codexes. I could be wrong about that last part. The story in ME is hardly original, either. There's a lot of things that prevent it from being the best. The exception to the rule. But again, they speak English, like all the others, and really, how many Hanar have you seen in Mass Effect so far? You can count them one one, maybe, two, hands. I don't even remember any Hanar in ME2... hm... I liked the Hanar, too.
DarkLink77
That's a trope used in mass media for such a long time. From Star Trek to friggin The Hunt for Red October to The 13th Warrior.
It's a design decision but has an explanation in the canon of the story.
Not only are there the hanar, there are the volus, elcor, racchni, keepers, krogan. They and the humanoid species have their own distinct cultures which are explained through dialogue and character interactions in addition to the codex entries.

Wow, a lot of information. I didn't know the Halo universe was so vast.Granted that it's mostly a shooter series, some of the story elements aren't as fleshed out as they would in an RPG like Mass Effect. Then again Mass Effect also has a codex in its pause menu to fill you in on the side.
