Uncharted 2
UC3 looks worse than 1 at times, very inconsistent
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Lets take this one a bit seriously: Top notch looking games need to meet certain criteria:
1. flawless performance
2. great technical graphics - no jaggies, no screen tearing
3. great artistic style
----
With those points in mind Im sure we can all agree that top 5 games on consoles graphically are:
1. Uncharted 3
2. Killzone 3
3. Uncharted 2
4. God of War 3
5. Killzone 2
----
Then there is a huge gap. Nothing on this gen consoles comes close to those 5 games with the above mentioned criteria in mind - every single game other than those five has its issues (framerate drops, lack of AA, screen tearing). Thats a FACT.
mmm my top 10 on consoles
1) uncharted 3
2) Killzone 3
3) GOW3
4) Geow3
5) Uncharted 2
6) KZ2
7) Forza 4
8) Uncharted 1
9) Geow2
10) GT5
BF3 is absolute marvel on high-end PC, but the console version shouldnt even be in the poll really, it looks only marginally better than console version of Crysis 2.Clear pick is Uncharted 3. Though I have yet to play BF3 retail on consoles yet. I did play the BF3 beta on my PS3 and it looked really bad.

4. MUST BE A PS3 EXCLUSIVE!

its not PS3's fault if the majority of the best looking console titles happen to be PS3 exclusives.. Its not like only PS3 fans in this forum have such opinion, media sector seems to share such thoughts as well...

Didn't the media also say Crysis 2 is the best looking console game? Anyway, did you read his entire post?

I must be out of the loop, top visual games on ps3? so gears 3, alan wake, crysis 2 (360 best looking or something like that) and more.......... dont count?
Or they don't like how it looks ? or they are fanboys ? who knows ? :P[QUOTE="PAL360"]
Some ppl may prefer Uncharted 3 over Gears 3 graphics, fair enough, but claiming Gears 3 and Forza 4 are not in the top 5 on consoles is bias at it´s best :o
TheGuardian03
i myself think the top 5 are and not in order
. 1. Uncharted 3.
2. Gears 3.
3. God of war 3.
4. Forza 4.
5.Uncharted 2.
And i'll dd a number 6  which is Killzone 2.
And i'd say the best looking ope world game is either Assassins creed brotherhood or RDR, next one is releasing in 2012, guess what is that game ?
But this is about tech graphics, not art direction :P
Otherwise i would have said Raiman Origins. The most beautiful game this gen!!!

I dont really get this one, but if you are implying that a question whether a game has great or really bad artistic ****is subjective - well its not. But that would be for too long, maybe Ill eventually blog about it.

That's not what I'm implying. I'm implying that your statement about how those 5 games have the best artistic design on consoles is a fact is laughable.
shame they are all based of pure realism..Im picking borderlands or Okami one cannot forget artstyle plays a huge role in graphics despite this boards continual hard on for realistic graphics which i think is becoming a stale bag :(

Artistic sty|e is subjective though. It depends on the preferences and tastes of the subject (the player) not the object (the game). Hence subjective vs. objective ...

Then you should have listed Rayman Origins if you feel its the best looking game, because there's no point in trying to compare the tech alone when many games are using different engines, and have strengths and weaknesses in their technical performance that can only be compared in an apples to oranges, but in the end, x looks better than y, kind of way. And if that's the case than how good a game looks IS what this topic's about, and there's no sense excluding art direction from consideration in such a discussion.
Don't let the PC graphics whores with their SUBJECTIVE numbers fool you, deciding what game has the best graphics IS a discussion about what game LOOKS the best.

Whether the Lighting engine in game A is more impressive than the polygon count in game B is a SUBJECTIVE question, even if it is a question of comparing technical graphics.
There is NO such thing as an overall OBJECTIVE graphics king discussion, technical or artistic. And no, one is not MORE subjective than the other.

I´ll vote Raiman once a poll about the best artistically designed game is made. Im really impressed with it´s visuals :)
Graphically, you are right, comparing different engines is a bit subjective but you dont need to know much about tech to conclude that Uncharted 3 has fantastic animations, Gears 3 awesome lightning or Rage runs at 60fps.

But they do all have great artistic style.
Uncharted series is movie-like visual experience with great emphasis on fluid motion capturing and with a tad of deliberate cheesyness in colors.
Killzone series is semi-realistic heavy-feeling warzone with large scale, but again its not trying to be photorealistic (that usualy doesnt end up good on current consoles), its stylized to utilize the capabilites of current hardware, I would say its even a bit cartoony here and there, but they never overdo it.
God of War 3 is a bit comics-like, yet very clear looking and shows you the scale that really gives you the feeling you are fighting gods.
Of course there are games that have more pronounced artistic design like Valkyria Chronicles and Folklore (and lets say Muramasa Demon Blade so that you dont feel like Im naming PS3 exclusives only - seems I have to be politically correct even on these boards :) ), but artistic design is only a part of the package - if a game wants to be considered graphical marvel of its generation, it must excel in all aspects visually.

Only if game A is superior in ALL those categories, along with every other technical category.
However, if game A isn't superior in every category (as the individual categories can be objective), then that second statement looks like...
And no, I don't find that ANY less subjective than...
They are both entirely subjective. It isn't a matter of degrees (As technically the word Objective should eliminate any discussion of degree anyways).
And if game A really is superior in EVERY technical graphics category that can be objective, than there's no point in having the discussion anyways, as it could all be empirically proven with numbers. Yet somehow, in every graphics discussion I've EVER seen, features play just as prominent a role as numbers because no two games ever shares the same features across the board.
Dark Souls
best looking open world game on consoles, some of the levels have redicliously hi-res and detailed graphics, textrues, effects etc. It has amazing custom non-reused art all thru out the game. The detail paid to every section of this game for being an open world type games is incredible. Crystal Caves? reminded me of the ice portion of crisis warhead on my PCseriously.
Graphics are like the must underrated portion of this game and I just wanted to make this note here. DS stomps most smaller linear games that are praised in graphics in the dust. (and yeah I konw it has some frame rate problems in certian sections)
Only if game A is superior in ALL those categories, along with every other technical category.
Seiki_sands
Yes, and for the games in the topic that is impossible. But if you look across a generation or two, you will find a case where a game is better than another in every technical aspect. Think Crysis vs. Pong. I don't think you could ever make a similar argument for art sty|e.

Isn't that the very definition of objective ...:?

Yep, I'll agree, you could probably objectively argue Crysis has better technical graphics than Pong (Of course, there are ZERO jaggies in some raster versions of pong, unlike crysis).
Of course, I'm pretty sure I could make a convincing argument it has better art as well...
In any case, its almost 100% irrelevant to this discussion. Simply because it might (and I stress might, for some reasons I'll mention in a minute) be theoretically possible to have an objective technical graphics king if a game happens to dominate every single technical graphics category doesn't mean its ever come close to happening. Further, I doubt such an eventuality anyways as "Texture Quality" is one of the most common things discussed in these threads, and that's actually an artistic category more than a technical one. Further, you can't compare polygon counts, because some games are more open and have more assets to generate than others. Also, if you compare things like resolution, or AA scheme, you will get a bunch of games being declared king because many games share such technology. Further, lighting engines and shadow quality are intrinsically linked to artistic considerations, just like texture. Draw distance depends on how much is being rendered, just like polygons. So no, you can't compare these things objectively. There is no proof in the numbers and it all comes down to subjective opinions about what looks better.
Yes, the ability to empirically prove something is the definition of objective, which is why graphic's king discussions, technical or artistic will likely never be objective, which was my point. And it follows, that since they will never be objective it makes zero sense to exclude ANY category relating to graphics (and btw, art is very broad, it is made of dozens of catagories itself, many of which border on being objective themselves).

I dont like God of War 3 art style too much, but that doesnt make it any less great. Its not about whether you like it or not. Good bike is a good bike despite many people disliking bikes, right?

Put the names on a dart board and I'll decide with a dart. They're all in the same league, IMO. Not one has separated itself from the pack.
And I prefer to look at Oblivion, Bioshock 1&2, and the Mass Effect series as much as any. I love the look of those games. The techincal aspect of graphics counts very little to me. The KZ series may be technically impressive, but it's ugly as hell in my book.
lol all one can say is uncharted 3 is basically a movie with about 2 hours of combined gameplay time inbetween qte's and cutscenes so its going to look the best until you actually look at the actual gameplay which looks less then gears 3.
This is a joke post right? And all five of your games have weaknesses, too. Uncharted 2 and 3 have very limited draw distance. Killzone 2 and 3 have some shoddy texture work at the wrong times, not to mention the extreme level of post-processing. God of War 3 has a forced camera perspective. To suggest that those five games make no concessions while others do is just flat wrong. Every console game makes concessions somewhere. It's the devs job to weigh their options and choose the best disadvantage. Then again, I too get a heavy feeling of joke post.[QUOTE="BlbecekBobecek"]

Generally, I track with you in many areas, but you're really off on this one. Cut scenes are not that long at all and make up a very small percentage of game play.lol all one can say is uncharted 3 is basically a movie with about 2 hours of combined gameplay time inbetween qte's and cutscenes so its going to look the best until you actually look at the actual gameplay which looks less then gears 3.
