.

Few months ago, I made a thread where we discussed First Person Shooters and most of us agreed that FEAR still has best Gunplay and Shooting mechanics in FPS genre. Today we are going to do the same with Third Person Shooters.

I've been playing Third Person Shooters since first Tomb Raider on MS-DOS and I think Max Payne 2 (2003- Original PC version only, not Console ports) still has the best gunplay and shooting mechanics in a Third Person Shooter. Why?

  • Requires precise aiming, just like First Person Shooters.
  • No Lock-on mechanic and Shaky Cam.
  • Responsive Controls (Animations don't slow down the action unlike in games like GTA 4 for example, where he spends half of the time changing his poss, especially when in cover).
  • Guns feel powerful (except 911 Pistol).
  • Unlimited Inventory (Not all guns are shown here but you got my point).
No 'Pick one drop others' BS
No 'Pick one drop others' BS
  • Sound Effects are Amazing.
  • One of the first games (if not the first) to use Ragdoll Physics (Grenades make a lot of mess in the room).
  • Hit Reaction and Character Physics.
He dies when Max shoots him 2nd time, but he reacts when bullet hits him the 1st time.
He dies when Max shoots him 2nd time, but he reacts when bullet hits him the 1st time.
  • No Cover mechanic.
  • Slow Motion and Shoot Dodge always helps.
  • Bullet Time Reload, keeps the action going.

.

Shame I haven't played any Max Payne games but I will totally go to bat for MGS V. It's a perfect combination of movement and gunplay. Having to judge the lag of a long sniper shot, creating impromptu cover spots, excellent gun feedback for all guns, and enemies with things like line of sight all add up to a phenomenal experience, especially at 60 FPS.

I like Gears' gunplay but its movement isn't near the best and I like Uncharted's movement but it's gunplay is just good.

I have to give it to Socom II. The competitive third person shooter scene was absolutely pushed forward, in consoles at least, because of Socom II. I'd get into more details, like the excellent OP, but I'm at work. :(

Probably Max Payne.

I do love being a sexy woman with a big shotgun in Resident Evil though.

The Max Payne series. No contest really.

I actually thought Mass Effect 3 had pretty fun gunplay as well

Probably Max Payne 3 or Gears of War. Both are quite satisfying.

Splatoon for me. Its fits the bill perfectly and offers so much more, you get the competitive team base gunplay.

It's great but it's also suffering from some of the GTA 4 problems. Those are more noticeable when you are using mouse and moving camera quickly to shoot, which confuses Max sometimes and he starts to behave awkwardly.

On controller, it gets the job done because you are not moving camera so quickly, so animations play as developers intended. Limited inventory was disappointment too.

MP3 might have droped the large inventory , but it's the only MP game where you can dual weild an Uzi with a pistol.

And what's wrong with the console version of Max Payne?

Max Payne 1/2 were pretty bad ports on Consoles, so I focused on original PC version.

@Cloud_imperium: Well ,if you go by reviews , sure , but i don't remember having an issue with the controls.

My biggest issue was the lack of quick save , but that's a major issue on all consoles.

If you can then I highly recommend you to play it again on PC on Max settings. Console versions were ported by Rockstar and use different engine, which has worse than low settings on PC and gameplay features were also cut from the game. Just play it, you'll experience a whole new game.

In my eyes the best 3rd person shooting comes from the Dead Space series, and its not even close for me. Unique guns... original dismembering mechanic... tight controls and aiming... highly visceral impact... and a gorgeous HUD-less display.

I still have Max Payne 1 on PC , with the Matrix Lobby Mod. Wish they made more mods like it , but back then it was hard to locate them.

No I meant Max Payne (MP) had pretty good community (Single Player modding scene). Max Payne 1 and 2 had no multiplayer.

Max Payne 2's combat is better (for all the things MP3 takes out as you stated), but gunplay is very specific: when I shoot gun, and bullet hits flesh/meat, how does it feel?

THAT Max Payne 3 does better than any game ever. It's action isn't as satisfying, and the game for a variety of reasons to me isn't as good as Max Payne 1 and 2, of all things story happens to be one of those things (go figure). But the core act of shooting a gun? feels fantastic. So I would give that nudge to MP3, but Max Payne in general has fantastic shooting. Makes you wonder why the shooting in Alan Wake is so fucking meh, and why the shooting in Quantum Break is so dull looking.

Otherwise I really like the snappy feel of Vanquish, but the larger appeal is how fluid all your movement is in that game.

I really like how Binary Domain handles dismemberment, as it handles it way the **** better than Dead Space ever did. Who knew Robots would be more interesting enemies than monsters.

And contrary to this forum I actually really dig how the guns work in The Last of Us between the sway, the lite recoil, the way everything animates, but the other part of the appeal is the concept of limited bullets and more importantly the fact that you can break line of sight in combat.

Gears of war is pretty good at core shooting as well.

Max Payne 1 and 2 are still two of my all time favorites.

3 has awesome gunplay but absolutely terrible pacing problems. It's a chore to replay.

Socom, Uncharted or Ghost Recon. Nothing else comes close to those. Ghost recon especially. I had a blast with those on the OG xbox as they were realistic, required tactics, switching weapons took time, backblast enabled, limited health packs, ammo could run out, and you could find yourself begging for safety when a tank rolled along and about 20 bad guys were flanking.

But yeah , i guess this and Half life showed me that game modding stuff is fun , but with my lack off english back then , it was hard to get knee deep into it.

mmhmm, Rockstar's tech team is second to none. Which makes sense given the ridiculous amount of resources they have and how much money they make. I bet the janitor is on a nice ass salary over there.

Max Payne 3's gunplay is divine enough to shine through the game's numerous shortcomings. But it's not just due to the feedback alone, but with the bullet-time and lean mechanic that makes the combat so satisfying.

It's just unfortunate that game Max does all these badass stunts that would make John Woo proud, while story Max just broods all the fucking time (with the exception of the last few chapters).

OG GR was 1st person. And I hope you're not talking about any of the sequels cause they sucked ass and were casualized crap.

Max Payne series are pretty much benchmarks for gunplay in TPS.

Resident Evil 4 is worth mentioning too.

Max Payne 3, Binary Domain, Vanquish.

I'll give it to Max Payne because it felt so good and satisfying to do head shots and the animation and free aim together makes it one hell of a TPS. If only the cutscenes can be skipped.

I need a sequel.
