Gunplay in TLoU doesn't seem to get much love, but it's my favorite in TPS.

the weapons sound good and have nice kick but the aiming feels sluggish and unresponsive. They did that so you would only use the guns as a last resort, doesn't exactly speak to the quality of the firefights

Yeah,,, they did it to promote Stealth gameplay. And TBH, it did good for what it was created. But if you judge it as a pure shooter then the story is different.

Max Payne 2's combat is better (for all the things MP3 takes out as you stated), but gunplay is very specific: when I shoot gun, and bullet hits flesh/meat, how does it feel?

THAT Max Payne 3 does better than any game ever. It's action isn't as satisfying, and the game for a variety of reasons to me isn't as good as Max Payne 1 and 2, of all things story happens to be one of those things (go figure). But the core act of shooting a gun? feels fantastic. So I would give that nudge to MP3, but Max Payne in general has fantastic shooting. Makes you wonder why the shooting in Alan Wake is so fucking meh, and why the shooting in Quantum Break is so dull looking.

Otherwise I really like the snappy feel of Vanquish, but the larger appeal is how fluid all your movement is in that game.

I really like how Binary Domain handles dismemberment, as it handles it way the **** better than Dead Space ever did. Who knew Robots would be more interesting enemies than monsters.

And contrary to this forum I actually really dig how the guns work in The Last of Us between the sway, the lite recoil, the way everything animates, but the other part of the appeal is the concept of limited bullets and more importantly the fact that you can break line of sight in combat.

Gears of war is pretty good at core shooting as well.

Disagree about MP2 being better at combat all things considered. Both MP2 and 3 are pretty barebone when it comes to combat.I mean there's not much strategy, not much of a difficulty, it's flash over substance (and I say that lovingly). But MP3's flash is just so much flashier. I think a cover mechanic makes sense, and the close executions are pretty rad. Aiming while lying down feels better.

As for Alan Wake, Remedy actually brushed up the mechanics a ton for American Nightmare (pretty fun arcade mode). The nail gun is pew-pew-pew sweetness :).

Agree about Binary Domain and TLOU.

It looks like most responses include Max Payne and/or Gears. I might have to agree.

I don't think any modern games have matched Mechwarrior or Mech Assault(Armored Core.) The character control has a greater logic to it, IMO. Doesn't feel as clumsy.

Good to see so many ppl picking Max Payne 3.

I never really see anyone praise it....I have seen several times ppl hate on it though. I sorta thought...."all I heard was ppl complaining about how games aren't difficult or deep in gameplay and then they make MP3 with, what I thought to be, somewhat deeper mechanics than just ice skate shooting like older shooters....and then all I heard was how MP3 was too hard".

I was sorta bummed b/c I thought it was a great game....I'm actually replaying it right now.

MP3 is my choice.

Socom, Uncharted or Ghost Recon. Nothing else comes close to those. Ghost recon especially. I had a blast with those on the OG xbox as they were realistic, required tactics, switching weapons took time, backblast enabled, limited health packs, ammo could run out, and you could find yourself begging for safety when a tank rolled along and about 20 bad guys were flanking.

OG GR was 1st person. And I hope you're not talking about any of the sequels cause they sucked ass and were casualized crap.

GRAW 1 and 2 were both FPS on PC and were pretty true to the originals, unlike their console counterparts. I remember trying to play it when it came out on an under-speced PC at 25 FPS and I kept getting one-two shot killed by freaking Mexican thugs because my reaction time/aim was too hampered by the low framerate to counter. And there I was thinking I was supposed to be a badass "advanced warfighter".

Oh and my pick would be Mass Effect 2/3. The sniper rifles and pistols were fun. I ...uh, don't play many TPSs.

Best Shooting Mechanics: (In no particular order)

-Max Payne 3

-Gears of War 3 - NOT Judgement or the other gears of war games simply because they are either too stiff or framerates are unbearable. The PC version of Gears 1 is perfection...

-The Last of Us Remastered

-Mass Effect 3

Decent Shooting Mechanics:

-Tomb Raider (@60FPS)

-Splinter Cell Conviction, Blacklist

-Ghost Recon Future Soldier

Yeah except i'm not too fond of the following
-Not having access all my guns vs a weapon wheel (I'm always going to pick the latter, and MP3 doesn't do the 2/3 weapon system thing in an all that interesting way, because as you stated it's all flash). And MP2 lets me stay flashy for longer and more varied ways.

-Not having the flow of the game come to a screeching halt everytime this dip shit needs to go through a door, especially because he's going to switch guns everytime, because they animated the cutscenes with him having a pistol.

Max Payne keeps the overall flow of combat rolling, 1 and 2, 3, Rockstar keeps getting in the way, and the whole time I want to go why can't Rockstar get out of the games way, when did they become Hideo Kojima?

It was a fun game. I liked it. Was directed by John Woo himself. It's sequel to his movie "Hard Boiled", one of the movies that inspired Max Payne 1 and 2.

Not gonna deny those two point. I guess my thinking was that the first one is not that big of a deal and the second one not part of the gameplay. But thinking some more on it, I kind of agree that the constant interruptions probably should be included in the gp. Just as you say they def have a pretty big negative effect on it (the constant unskippable cutscenes are a nuisance in the story and completely kills the arcade mode).

And yeah the automatic weapon switching annoyed me like crazy lol.

Any Max Payne game is a good choice, the interesting thing is that the first game has a different feel than the other two. It is kind of a melee game with shotguns and assault rifles. While the other two are more "realistic". In terms of gunplay alone, I'd say the third one is the best. In many ways it's a perfected Max Payne 2.

It's cool to see some people mentioning Mass Effect 3 here, when everything is considered, it has indeed a great gunplay, but I'd say Mass Effect 2 has a better balance and is more fun to play. I'd also give a mention to Splinter Cell Blacklist which has the best stealthy combat there is, and the gunplay is tight. Gears of War 3 is also a good choice.

I'd be hard pressed to say no to mass effect. I do love the series and even though the 2nd one had the best campaign, i'd give gunplay to the 3rd one. especially in the co-op mode, but the gun play was aided greatly by the power/melee/combos etc. and the fact you could literally go through and beat it without using a gun puts it lower on the list for me personally. great games, but not the best TPS IMO

never played any max payne games so i dont have an opinion about it. Ive always preferred TPS over fps , socom was really good back in its day , gears was good too but my favorite are MGS 3,4 and 5. MGS5 has resurrected my interest in gaming, idk why but just havent had any urge to play until this masterpiece arrived.

Would disagree here, it's the part where they are a bit more difficult to shoot that adds to how satisfying the action is and when the stealth itself is broken. Being able to move from cover to cover, break line of sight, properly line up shots, and hit is part of what makes it all engaging. Especially if you are on a higher difficulty and are in a spot light on bullets.

Plus the animations themselves and how meaty a solid head shot feels makes it all sing. It's why the mp is enjoyable. It isn't STALKER territory of making you work for your shot (an aspect about that game that I really fucking like), but for a safer traditional triple A production it's still well done. And it isn't straight up incompetence like the shooting mechanics of Uncharted 1 and 3.
