Poll Best mario game(core series)-POLL (107 votes)
Which Mario is your personal favorite? I'll be buried with my sealed copy of Mario 64 so you know my vote already :D

That's tough.
Favorite 2D, probably SMW. Everything from the visuals to platforming was top notch.
Favorite 3D...sunshine for its out of the box experience and 3D world for its pure platforming awesomeness. I would give a nod to super Mario 64 but the n64 controller is so awful, getting a GameCube to n64 controller adapter soon so maybe that will be better.
Super Mario land games can go die in a fire (loved em as a kid but they're pretty bad nowadays, saying that as someone who has boxed copies of each).
@achilles614:
64 controller is great. I can't understand why people dislike it, especially when the discussion at hand includes 3d Mario games.
I picked SM World.
It was a huge evolution and I felt Mario 64 was too easy after a while. There were hard parts but I remember doing timed runs in college and impressing my roommates.
I had a lot of good times with the Super Mario series. The first Nintendo console I had was the Nintendo Entertainment System.
We had all 3 Mario Bros. games. for the NES. The 2 I played the most were Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3. The 2nd one was the easiest one for me to beat as a kid. I feel Super Mario Bros. 3 was a more well designed game however in my opinion.
For the Super Nintendo Entertainment system, I owned Super Mario World. This game was a lot of fun and reminded me a lot of Super Mario Bros. 3. I had a lot of fun especially because of the Star World and the hidden areas on many of the maps.
The game that had the biggest effect on me though was Super Mario 64. I first came across this game when I was out of state in Pennsylvania at my cousin's. It was the first time I ever seen a 3D Mario game. It was so new at the time and left such an impression on me, I have to say it's my favorite Mario series game.
I haven't tried any Mario games past Super Mario Sunshine, but I have to give honorable mentions to Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Tennis, and Mario Golf. All those games were awesome.
@n64dd:
The analog stick is still the best for the precision required in quite a few n64 titles. I remember being disappointed in the next batch that followed with consoles. Analog triggers are just plain stupid.
Very surprising lack of Galaxy, a joyous game with a sense of wonderment Crytek and Naughty Dog could only dream of, running on infinitely weaker hardware.
@Heirren @n64dd
I just don't like how the n64 control stick is so prone to degradation. I've read that you can repair the internal mechanism and make it like new, but until I repair mine they still have an ever so slight wobble.
Have you tried out the hori n64 controllers? If so, how do you think they compare?
Also are either of you considering getting the UltraHDMI (or even heard of it) installed on your n64?
Super Mario World still plays the best of all the 2D Mario games. But Yoshi's Island is my favorite.
Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 were my favorites, though Super Mario Bros 3 was also great. My rich friends dad bought part 3 in Japan before it was released in America. The text was all in Japanese, but we loved it. The Tanooki suit was epic at the time. Still though, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 were definitely my favorites. A direct sequel to Super Mario 64 on the NX would be epic, IMO...
@achilles614:
Yeah. They last long if you don't abuse them. I did just open my brand new one. It's an incredible controller if it's fresh.
Ultra HDMI? Doubt it. Have two higher end crts, a decent production monitor that isn't up and running, but ultimately on the lookout for a Sony bvm. Too much lag on LCD.
@Heirren: what are the higher end CRTs? I have a 26inch trinitron which I use for component sources (which I'm soon modifying internally to allow for RGB inputs) and my pvm which I use for RGB. I'm getting UltraHDMI installed to complement my RGB n64.
With UltraHDMI there is very little input lag (only microseconds in certain modes) so if you have a fast TV it might not be so bad. I think my LCD has about 35ms which I don't notice despite being very sensitive to image properties, probably more than most. It's the blurring caused on an LCD that annoys me, not input lag. I play f zero just as fine on my LCD as I do on my CRT.
Anyway ...probably shouldn't derail thread.

11 bucks to replace :)
@achilles614:
I've only vey recently heard of that. I'll have to look into it. You should post your thoughts on it if you get it.
The fact anyone thinks that pile of crap Mario 64 is the best makes me sick. Really showing your youth on that one.... I would say it's not a bad game, but nothing about it is even slightly good to me. It's overly simplistic in everything outside of some horrible camera angles. Whatever though, to each their own. I went with SMW, but it is really close between that and 3, and I just picked one in the end.
@WitIsWisdom:
Mario 64 has the best 3d control to date, and the way the character interacts with the environment is unprecedented. It, along with Sunshine, are the only 3d platformer that truly platform in 3d space.

I'm 34 and pretty much played every Mario game to death(including the real mario 2, japanese version before the Doki Doki Panic switcheroo on the disk drive. Mario 64 is the cream of the crop followed by the New Super Mario Bros U 2d platformer.
Mario 64 nailed the exploration, soundtrack, and control and changed 3d gaming forever in terms of platform games.
To say it's not your favorite is fine, but to call it a pile of crap is absurd.
I love the game so much I own a first print factory sealed.
Very surprising lack of Galaxy, a joyous game with a sense of wonderment Crytek and Naughty Dog could only dream of, running on infinitely weaker hardware.
It's Mario, he sort of has a pretty stacked roster of classics.
Pretty much.

Like I said, to each their own, but the fact you are a massive N64 fan doesn't help your argument in my book. I'm glad you like the game... it still doesn't change my opinion about the game. Perhaps I don't like it because I wanted more SMW (which absolutely blew my mind when I was younger) and I didn't get it... I don't know. Mario 64 just never gave me that sense of amazement. The game isn't bad for what it is, I just prefer the 2D platforming that the franchise was known for to that point. I get that it defined 3D and was a huge step forward in that aspect, but the game itself leaves more than a little to be desired (once again IMO). It all but entirely removed any bit of difficulty outside of getting lost and not knowing where to go at times. I don't blame shoddy camera angles in certain places, and it did a fantastic job at a first attempt... that's for sure. I should have picked my words better, and explained why I though it was crap. It isn't the game or gameplay, it is just that it was a large transition I personally didn't like especially since there were not any other options.
I own a copy of the game as well, it isn't SIB, but I have a game collection over 3,500 games deep and own just about every Mario game imaginable on every console you can think of and Mario is easily one of my favorite if not my favorite franchise of all time. I am still waiting for a true Super Mario Brothers 4 (starting where 3 left off.. I feel it hasn't been done), or a true sequel to Super Mario World. No, I don't consider Yoshi's Island that game, and no, I don't like that game either. I think the reason I DO like Super Mario Galaxy and newer 3D iterations is because it isn't the only option. We have 2D and 3D variations, where as when Mario 64 came out there were no options, and it just left a bad taste in my mouth. Perhaps that clouds my judgment a little, but Mario 64 isn't even my favorite 3D iteration. I am one who breaks down games bit by bit though, and I actually don't think that 2D and 3D Mario games should be grouped together, but I understand why they are here to show personal preference per person.
I just find it hard to believe that anyone who has played Mario from its onset would pick Mario 64 as their favorite game in the entire series that's all... doesn't mean it isn't possible. Some people just prefer 3D I guess.
Could you post a pic of all the other Mario games you own? I respect opinions, but the 64 which was hardly supported by anyone gets about as much "nostalgic love" from people as the GC around these parts, and it has became the "cool thing" to act as though each and every person was all over it. It's kind of like Wilt Chamberlain said about his 100 point game. Although there weren't many people there, he said he had a million people over the years tell him they were front and center and watched live in person as it happened. I'm definitely not saying you are in that boat, I just can't help but feel that is the majority case. It is really difficult for me to believe that so many think 64 is the best... but different strokes for different folks hey? lmao. That's what makes the world turn.
I still say that the poll shows more about average age of the voters then you would guess even if you are older than I would have guessed. Not by the way you presented yourself, but it was just a hunch. I apologize I was wrong.
Just out of curiosity, what are your other 3 top 5 favorite SMB games?
I just cose "other" because there's no way i could possibly pick just one. Even if I did, i'd probably pick a different one tomorrow, it all depends on what mood i'm in, whether its for 2d, 3d, tropical theme, outer space theme, etc.
For me it's Super Mario Bros 1, 3 and Super Mario World. I voted for 'World' though.
Not a fan of 'Galaxy' and the New Super Mario Bros games, just aren't as good as the old ones.
@emgesp: No, I've played them all. Generally, the 2D games are better than the 3D games, but 3D world gets the best of both.
Poll is interesting. 3, World, and 64 hugely popular as expected. Did NOT expect Galaxy 1 to receive so little love. Sunshine hammers it in votes!
Galaxy is overrated. Its not even in the same league as Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World.
I think it's a disc of heroin with a Mario logo :D

Mario 64 was a game changer and set the tone for 3D gaming. Until VR, Mario 64 was the last "HOLY SH*T!!11!" moment I had in gaming.
I gotta go with Super Mario 3D World. I think the newer ones are some of the best ever made. Galaxy, Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros Wii U, and New Super Luigi.

Always good to see another collector. Some pretty cool sealed games. Are you a sealed collector for all Nintendo, or just certain franchises? I have very little sealed Nintendo stuff, but own a good deal of sealed over all. Do you have a good size collection, or do you have very specific tastes? Sometimes I wish I had more specific tastes, instead of thinking I need to own and try to complete (CIB) every game I see... lol. Mostly from about N64/PS1 back. I own over half the NES, SNES, and GEN collections, and have worked on completing games over the years. I pick up a manual or box when I find one, and piece them together like old cars. I only hand select the best condition games, and am very picky about any damage what so ever... it has screwed me out of some good deals over the years, but 99% of my games are pretty pristine because of the stinginess. Display room is a bit limited since I own so much, so I tend to keep a lot of boxes and manuals in storage... One of these days I hope to get a house where my wife will just let me turn the entire basement into a game museum.... I guess we will see how that works out.. heh. She already hates me taking up an entire wall in our house now as it is.
Anyways, about the whole Mario 64 thing, collectors get a free pass whether or not any other game players think their tastes are eccentric or not.. :P
That sealed TMNT is awesome. I wish this site still had the old unions... I was part of the CCU (Candid Collectors Union) for several years. It's hard to find others that share an interest in game collecting.

I actually gave the turtles game recently to a friend who is a much bigger turtles fan than I. I mainly concentrate on NIntendo but I have a lot of sealed stuff and rarities. Even have some sealed DD games.
