What do you think is the best RPG this generation?
swguy123
Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3 & New Vegas, Tales of Vesperia, Dragon Quests IX and Valkyria Chronicles.
It's a WRPG made by a Japanese studio.[QUOTE="Fightingfan"][QUOTE="BPoole96"]
Isn't Demon's Souls a JRPG?
BPoole96
Oh, I just figured a RPG made in Japan automatically became a JRPG. I guess Western developers could make JRPGs if they wanted to then?
Why dont we just stop calling them JRPG's? It would save a lot of confusion.[QUOTE="BPoole96"][QUOTE="Fightingfan"] It's a WRPG made by a Japanese studio.toast_burner

Why dont we just stop calling them JRPG's? It would save a lot of confusion. I wish we would go back to the old terms Console RPGs and Computer RPGs.Haven't really played a game this gen that made me think "Wow, this is a fantastic RPG!"
I've played a lot of RPGs that I thought were really good games (Mass Effect series, Resonance of Fate, The Witcher, Dragon Age etc.) but nothing that really pushed the boundaries of roleplaying or anything. Mainstream RPGs have gotten a bit too safe with where they are, IMO.
WRPGS are shallow openworld games with terrible gameplay and story, games like oblivion and fallout
Zurrur
I guess Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and The Witcher aren't WRPGs then. Silly me.
In all seriousness though:
WRPG - Mass Effect I/II (Couldn't pick one. The first one has a better story, the second has better gameplay.)
JRPG - Valkyria Chronicles
You forgot to add Dragon Quest IX. That's level 5.[QUOTE="Fightingfan"]Too many, but I can tell you one that won't be listed. Anything made by Square enix in the past 6 years besides. Besides "The world ends with you". (DS)Bigboi500

Just remember... Anything like Dragons or mid-evil times is Western. Anything with Anime girls or asian history tied in is Japanese :P[QUOTE="AdobeArtist"]Mass Effect isn't an RPG.Not even a contest here. Mass Effect series.

* role playing through player interaction with self defined role
* personalized gaming experience with options in cIassess and skills
* starting small and gaining power in increased stats & abilities
By any and ALL criteria, ME series is an RPG. This is categorical FACT that opinion can't simply blink away.

Compared to cRPGs it bastardizes all of those things to an extent that some just call it a TPS.

It's definitely an RPG, just a mediocre one at that imo. :P ME2 was great though, if forgettable.

I don't often agree with you but you're right.
I prefer ME1, despite its flaws

Mass Effect is as much of an RPG as Fallout 3 is to fun, therefore not at all. Role Playing Game Mass Effect involves role-playing, more so than pretty much any RPG. Hell there's way more real role playing than any Final Fantasy, I guess FF isn't an RPG either. The conversation system in which you choose what to say is 100% role playing. What you say may not have a huge effect but it definitely changes some things, and that's really what role playing is. Anyway, in my opinion, Demon's Souls. Oh but I guess that's not an RPG either because there's action... even though everything about is distinctly reminiscent of an RPG (leveling up, moral choice, equipment, upgrading weapons, etc.).[QUOTE="Yangire"]

Honestly, if Mass Effect 1's glitches were ironed out and the skill based combat system from ME2 was implemented (Mass Effect 1's combat seemed to devolve into simply holding down the trigger and spraying in the general direction of your enemies too often, especially on higher difficulties) I'd prefer Mass Effect 1 to 2 but...as it stands, Mass Effect 2 is the better game. In my opinion, of course...[QUOTE="-Snooze-"]

Most definitely. I can't see a way in which Mass Effect 3 could end up bad. With all Bioware has learned from making Mass Effect 1 and 2, there's no reason it shouldn't be top notch. Please Log In to post.
