RTS and Strategy games are completely and utterly lame in my opinion.
For some reason these games thrive like crazy on PC, I guess cuz it's point and click but still.
Thank god for Alan Wake, Mass Effect etc. or I wouldn't have a need for a gaming PC the way these RTS games consume PC's.
[QUOTE="strider_ATI"]empire total war is the ultimate mix of turn based and real time strategy gaming. Empire wins. Company of heroes comes in third, behind medieval 2 total war.illegalimigrant
Totally agree with you.
this game isn't even out yet....how on earth can it "win".
Have you given them a shot at least?RTS and Strategy games are completely and utterly lame in my opinion.

What Does A Monkey Know About The Taste Of Ginger ?
Its a tie between Halo Wars and CnC 3: Tiberium Wars on the 360; there, happy IgGy :P
On topic, Rise of Nations followed by Age of Empires 2 and Red Alert 2.

I have and I just couldn't get into them. I need to be in the action myself, guiding a bunch of other tiny soldiers to do what I want is not my idea of fun, i'd rather be a soldier shooting people then a general watching it on TV telling him where to shoot.
Ohhh I so hate Microsoft for closing Ensemble cause Rise of Nations is my favourite RTS ever with Company of Heroes a veryyyyyyyyyyyyy close second.ffxcrazyxD
Actually Big Huge Games made RoN, but I do agree, Ensemble was on of my favorite developers.
The full game isn't playable online and the AI is TERRIBLE. The AI for total war games has always been retarded. Bromz
I want to see sou saying that after you lose the HRE campaign in Deus Io Vult mod...
Lol, Empire Total Crap is the best RTS ever? Puh-Lease.
Easily goes to 2nd best game of all time Starcraft: Brood War.
Have we forgotten about Age of Empires 2? That game made RTS what it's today.
azad_champ
Technically, Dune 2 is the game that made RTS games what they are today.

Two points on that... A) First of all, obviously using mods to defend a game is absolutely dumb. I could make it so England get 20 units a turn for free and all of a sudden its hard. Thats not the point. B) I never really played Medieval mods. But if they're anything like the Rome mods such as Darth, Europa Barbarorum, Rome Total Realism etc they all increase difficulty artificially. I want to actually have the AI just better tactics not just have its units get better stats, as someone who played alot of the online (despite riduclous bugs such as shield bonus not working) I could basically fall asleep and beat the computer. This is the same in most games, however its especially evident in Total War because the point (of the battle map at least) of it is to make you feel like a general...this means actual tactics with formations etc so it highlights a rubbish AI other than most RTSs where its about build orders and such which you can make an AI do proficiantly. I'm cautiously optimistic of Empire because of the Napoleonic Total War 2 mod. This is the single greatest mod ever released, thats a fact. It was online only and suffered from obvious engine limitations associated with modding a Roman warfare game into a Napoleonic warfare game. However it was extremely fun, I hope Creative Assembly rip it off. Then again, its CA...so expect artillery that shoots flaming elephants who shoot laser beams from their backs.I haven't had much experience with RTS, but from the experience that I had, I really love total war. I've only played shogun total war, because of sucky comp. and playing other genres more, but the combat in the game was awesome. In most other RTS, the combat was reduced pretty much to triangle relations of shooting swordmen with archers, hitting archers with cavalry etc. In shogun, the terrain effects, fatigue and morale really changed the game up, and the real time fights were awesome.
That isn't saying I didn't enjoy other RTS though. I had tons of fun with age of empires 2, red alert 2, civ 4 etc.
best rts is still and will be for a long time to come
EMPIRE EARTH
but there are a lot of good ones out their

NAME me ONE melee Strategy title more tactical...That combines NAVAL battles...Strategic DEPTH...ONE...
Do you have anything better than ETW to play? Starcraft2? A pathetic Dune2 Dinosaur that the Koreans just wont let die...?
As for the so called "AI" there IS NO AI IN GAMES...Its the eyar 2008 FOR CHRISTS sake!!!!! Not 2800!!!! Total War has so many tactical and strategic options its mind boggling....So the inablility to make a challenging PROGRAMMED OPONNENT just HIGHLIGHTS the tactical deph of the game....
Seems that there are a lot of immature fanboys in this thread who are too squeamish to handle the idea that other people may like certain games better than their favourites.
top 3 best rts ever:
1. Rome: Total war
2. Medieval 2: total war
3. Rome: Total war Barbarian Invasion
getting next: medieval 2 kingdoms, world in conflict(demo rocks)

Empire Total war has not come yet but in my list it would be the top. It looks so awsome!

Well, um, no. As much as I love Warcraft 2, it has one major flaw - the opposing factions aside from magic-casting units doesn't differ from each other.
i have downloaded the demo for WiC its amazing, and very addictive. though not officailly RTS because of no base building. who cares its fun and it has nukes what more could you ask for.
Empire total war is amazing and im defiantly getting it, especially with the new naval battles.
and everyone likes these old games that i wouldnt even call 2d graphics, with no phisics what soever it all comes down to rock paper sisccors. BORING!!!
This one still remains as the best in my eyes:SoI know I will get flack for this but being somebody who hasn't played that many RTS, which one is this?foxhound_fox
Alan
this will still be the best naval wargame, I doubt Empire will touch it, Europa Universalis 3 will propably be better at grand strategy than Empire too.
But what makes TotalWar so good is that is does everything good, it's not best at everything (it can't be, the complexity would kill any normal gamer if it was), but it offers great quality in every aspect of warfare
SoI know I will get flack for this but being somebody who hasn't played that many RTS, which one is this?[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]This one still remains as the best in my eyes:
