Screw a city. I want a sandbox world. And to me, there is none finer than that of Red Dead Redemption; a beautiful and diverse depiction of the wild west. Love it. Also, Just Cause 2 and Fallout 3.
GTA3 was the most memorable, especially the first island. I used to play PS2 without a memory card and would always get to the second island, so I know the city pretty well. Also you had no GPS you just had to travel to the location so you get to know the city more. GTA IV was a step up though.
Oh man.. AC or AC2 for atmosphere followed by GTA4.. San Andreas for big & varied with a lot to do.. Just Cause 2 for being massive & a being able to do a bunch of crazy stuff.
