Question... Why is Bioshock up there and not System Shock 2?
arto1223
Bioshock shouldn't even be up there.
Well yea... It should be System Shock and Deus Ex... but hey, to each there own I guess.
System Shock 2 is superior to Bioshock in every concievable way, not to mention the story is a blatant rip-off. Even if you take ss2 out of the picture, Bioshock is still mediocre as a FPS and the "RPG" elements are laughable.
In no particular order:
System Shock 2
Deus Ex
MoH: Frontline
Cod 2
Bioshock
Thats really all i've played of the FPS genre.
I see alot of comments out halo ce.Okay, halo 1 is good. but i dont think its single player component does what any of the games on the list do in terms of story telling, atmosphere and even gameplay. its still great, but i feel like it was revolutionary for ITS time, But time has kept going and its been out classed by all of the games on that list.
jettpack
I think you really need to put halo: ce up there on the list! With all respect, but this is just your opinion! I think many, me included, think halo: ce is the best FPS they played! It wasn't really revolutionary, but an evolution so important almost all FPS's now use halo's mechanics...
Gameplay at the time was unrivaled, it was so great! I think it's gameplay is superior to the games you listed, although metroid prime is just brilliant!
And i think storytelling and atmosphere were great too!
And i love playing halo still! I really do
Just my opinion!

Nods to Halo: CE, FEAR, and Bioshock from me, but Half-Life 2? No way, man. :P

It's better than Half-Life 2. :PIn terms of gunplay and AI, absolutely. IMO, no FPS comes close to FEAR when it comes to the thrill and intensity of the gunplay. None.
But in terms of story and atmosphere and pacing, HL2 wins.

pacing sure, story sure, atmosphere? massively questionable. It's hardly lacking in that area. Besides at least it delivers in the combat department. Half Life 2 can be yawn inducing with its damn combat.[QUOTE="organic_machine"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"] It's better than Half-Life 2. :Pjg4xchamp

On Alyx Vance alone Half Life 2 spanks Fear in that department. Atmosphere could go either way though. In terms of gunplay and AI, absolutely. Also Eli Vance, Barney, the doc are all well done for the most part. Admittedly when judged by the "for videogame characters card". I already stated Fear plays better in terms of combat. It's just hella repetitive, and the level design was lacking at times.[QUOTE="DarkLink77"] In terms of overall story, I give it to FEAR, because it tried to do something somewhat original. I don't really consider Metroid Prime an FPS... but I voted for it anyway :P. Love Crysis, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (even if my current save has me stuck in a high radiation zone and I keep dying...), and Half-Life 2 too, but I've yet to play Bioshock.

Meh. I don't buy into the whole "Metroid Prime isn't a FPS, it's First Person Adventure" argument. It's First Person, and it has plenty of shooting in it. Definitly a FPS, just an uncoventional one.
I havent played all FPSs in the world, but this is my top five: 1) Half Life 2 2) F.E.A.R. 3) Crysis 4) Killzone 2 5) Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Buther Bay Honorable mention: Shadow Warrior. I never understood why Bioshock is so high rated. It was average at best imho.BlbecekBobecek
Agreed. I just cant must up the energy to finish the game. The beginning is great, but it feels like it just goes downhill after the opening.
Killzone 2 is even better than FEAR in those aspects actually. The only FPS I can think of that can beat FEAR in intensity of the gunplay.IMO, no FPS comes close to FEAR when it comes to the thrill and intensity of the gunplay. None.

Get creative with your plasmids :P Makes things more fun, it wouldn't be half the game it is with just the guns...[QUOTE="jettpack"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"]

Question... Why is Bioshock up there and not System Shock 2?
jettpack
system shock 2 is fantastic, but i think bioshock was an improvement.
Bioshock is actually a downgrade from SS2 from gameplay mechanics only the strory and related artifacts has an improvement.
Anyways System Shock 2 is probably more an Action Adventure/RPG than a FPS. The same with Deus Ex for the ones saying that. Thanks to the downgrade Bioshock fits well the FPS tag.

i would hardly call it a downgrade. i mean sure, the rpg elements arent asprevalentin bioshock but i think to call bioshock a downgrade is a case of retro goggles.

I was a Bioshock fanboy until I decided to play some old game that the haters always mentioned. So no, if it were retro googles I would still be a Bioshock fanboy since I played that first.
