Best stories in video games?

Other than Planescape: Torment, of course. That one is a given for the top spot. :P

In all seriousness, what games do you think have the best stories in gaming? From any generation, any platform, and any series. No poll here, because there are probably going to be too many to list.

Most of the FFs have good stories (albeit they're all a bit simplistic).

Metal Gear Solid stories are great I think.

Most RPG's have pretty good stories...

I think when it comes to story in a game, the best ones are the ones that you HAVE to seek out people and talk about it after you beat it. There have really only been a handfull of games that have cause me to do that, and I can really only name 2 off the bat. Killer 7's Story is so freaking crazy, that only after talking to people and researching some history are you able to figure it out. A real "Whoah....no freaking way!" moment.

The other was Shadow of the Colussus. Figuring out what the heck was going on (who the girl was, why the old gods were imprisoned, etc...) was an awesomly fun part of the discussion after the game.

The following stand out to me: God of War Shadow of the Colossus Final Fantasy 7 Bioshock The Darkness (I liked the story anyway) I'm sure there are many I'm forgetting... but I'm tired, and those stuck out immediately to me.remaGloohcSdlO

I luv this man :D except he forgot to add killerX and I much rather like Resistance's story. Sure it aint deep and Nathan Hale has about as much character as Master Chief, but the way it is told in a documentary type way really helps to bring up the Mythos of Nathan Hale. So i guess Resistance would be up there for Best STORY TELLING not Story :p

I just found myself really compelled to play those games and find out what was going to happen next, and IMO thats what a great story and game are all about.

thats what i was thinking ... the FFXII story was anythign but simplistic.

FF7 had the best story in any game i played to date.

Kingdom Hearts, especially CoM - KH 2,

Makes me curious to play Vagrant Story, since they're all part of his big "Ivalice Cycle" of games.
