Wasn't Bioshock just sort of a System Shock 2 rip off of sorts? Or have I been misinformed?

Oh yeah, METRO 2033. No doubt.

Although, the Cryostasis love over here makes me interested. I never heard much about it since i was a little bit out of the loop at the time.

What's it about?

It's an almost impossible PC game to run that has probably the best narrative ever in an FPS. To summarize it, you're an meteorologist commissioned to board an Soviet ice-breaker vessel around 1981. This only to find it was wrecked in the mid of all the ice for a really long time. Once there you're able to relive key character's final moments you find deceased in order to change the fate of the ship. As you go further into the ship, reliving those moments, the plot unfolds (as well as an interesting fable).

It did won either 2010 or 2011 story of the year here from gamespot.

Human Revolution, if we're shoehorning it into the FPS genre.

A "spiritual successor" is what it's normally referred to as. It does use the same mechanic of a friend actually being an enemy in disguise throughout, but it isn't entirely the same.

Wasn't the story also a fourth wall comment on the nature of video games?

Without a doubt in my mind; Bioshock. Not only is it the only shooter without an abysmal storyline, it is also the only story this gen that can compare to MGS4's.

Well it was made by the same developers, and they consider it to be a "spiritual successor". Plus, it's an incredible game. Get if you haven't tried it out. 1 and 2 are $5 each on Steam right now. BTW. Loved System Shock 2. Such a freakin classic. I'm gonna have to play it again soon.

Godamn, where to begin. Funnily enough I've been doing development research around this region - looking at the shooter genre and some impressive papers delving into this kind of thing - though on a very different level to the topic. It's very interesting stuff, enough to have excellent PHDs about it. Anyway. Not Bioshock (there's a huge amount of problems in its story, let alone how conflicted its messages are) - though it does have some of the best environmental storytelling a game can have, and a great script. Bioshock 2 is quite good. Human Revolution is a mix of great and poor; it's not consistent enough for me to say it's 'the best'. It's a shame because for everything it did outstandingly it also did poorly in contrast (in terms of story). Metro 2033 had some major character problems and was a bit too rail-roaded for my liking. Pretty damn good, though didn't hit the same notes the book did; more wonderful environmental storytelling. The Darkness was damn great, thematically it was lacking a bit - the world war 1 hell world stuff, and Darkness history nonsense didn't gel with the mob drama, but I will say I found it a ton more compelling then the goofy comics. Great use of characters too, can't say that about most FPS games. Crytostasis - haven't played enough of it, but it's very, very interesting in how it delivers its story, no interesting characters so far except the bickering captain. I am liking the parallels with the folk tale though. I think STALKER's is pretty great. The central plot is delivered atrociously, but the way the game sells its environment, atmosphere and sense of space and place is absolutely superb. Bulletstorm gets my nomination as notable. It's easy to scoff at as it's not putting on its pseudo intellectual cap and trying to posture as a case study of the human condition. It's Moby Dick with gruff soldier-men, and tons of violence - and a script as self aware and absurd as the action onscreen. Which all fits very very well together; it's a funny immature story with some nice notes, that compliments the funny immature gameplay well. Compared to a game like Bioshock 1 and 2 which are games about shooting drug addicts in the face, burning them with lighting and fire, pegging them to walls, or mauling them with drills - but then posture as being something greater then their actual function as games. Which is a very common problem in games trying to tell a compelling story particularly the first person shooter genre.

Story is more important than gameplay.

Well no, however a game which is going to possibly blend story and gameplay together would be more interesting to the rest wouldn't it?
