Bioware hands down.

It's one thing to make a great story, its another thing to make a great story that is dictated by your actions.

Square has some good storylines but not as good as Kojima or Valve imho, and I only played Mass Effect from Bioware. The story wasn't bad. Maybe after Mass Effect 2 and Dragon age I'll switch to Bioware :D

Thats true too. Its much easier to have a totally linear story.

In theory, yes. But that does not automatically make for bad stories by default. Deus Ex is an example of a game with a brilliant story and would make for a brilliant book, if it were to be formatted for a book.

a great story doesn't have to be compatible with an all-text format. the watchmen, portal, and mulholland drive are all perfect examples of this, from different spectrums of storytelling.

Oh, I agree. I never said it had to be compatible. I was just pointing out that no matter what platform, Deus Ex had an amazing story.

i'd say valve, but it takes so long for their games to come out I can't even say, I mean its like someone taking me out to a steak restaurant eating the free order of bread and dragging me out because I still haven't had my steak and I really want it. They make incredible games but take their sweet time

I mean I seriously think i'll have kids by the time HL:3 comes out

Yeah I went Kojima. Much like the Oscars sometimes, I don't feel MGS is the best story, but Kojima is a great storyteller in this medium. Just wish he would speed it up sometimes.

Fumito Ueda is my favourite storyteller.

I love how his games let the story flow through gameplay.

I find that Bioware and Valve games have 'ok' story lines, they just present them very well. I never thought that Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Half-Life series had really good stories, it's just how you play through it and make decisions is what's so engrossing. That being said I really liked the stories in the older Square games, not Square-Enix. I also loved the MGS stories, mostly 1 and 3. I didn't care much for 2 and 4 was 'alright'.

I've yet to play them, but I guess it won't exactly blow my mind considering the JRPGness :|

Abyss had a great story, but symphonia and more recently vesperia weren't that great tbh. They were okay, but certainly not worthy of being mentioned amongst Square and Kojima.

I actually agree with every word you typed :). MGS 1 & 3 have the best stories in the series (love 2&4 as well though). While games like Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, and 9 don't have story decisions or conversation trees, the core stories are deep and unravel in a well paced manner. And western RPGs typically have great story presentation with good main stories/back stories to support them.

Where's the option for all? All of these devs know how to tell/present a deep and intriguing story. Personally I like Final Fantasy games the best. But the way Bioware and Valve present their stories is incredible.

Keiichirō Toyama is pretty great. He was the lead direction on the original Silent Hill and all of the Forbidden Siren games, which have some of the best stories in the horror genre. Valve and Kojima are also good storytellers, though Kojima's approach is sometimes a little overly convoluted.

HL2 had the only story that i ever actually cared about so valve for me. Bioshock had a good story but it was't as good as Valves.
