It's hard to pick....
Final Fantasy VII argueably brought the RPG genre to a new level when it went 3d, Metal Gear became a cult classic with it's 3d debute and Zelda is one of the undisputed best games of all time...
I will personally go with Final Fantasy but there is no loser between those 3 at least.

No it just made rpgs more mainstream in america.
Nintendo freaking nailed it repeatedly and perfectly. Ocarina Of Time, Mario 64 and Metroid Prime: All masterpieces. Also Donkey Kong 64.locopatho
Agreed but I wish they made another Donkey Kong not a beat drum or racing game.. How long has it been since gamers played with it's traditional platforming.

and making a genre much more mainstream is not bringing it to a new level?

you said when it went 3D.Wow an rpg going 3d ,very hard to do.
Zelda isn't the same without the bird's eye view. Which is why the only Zelda Games that I like are the Pre-N64 and Handheld ones.
Mario's better in Side-scroll mode.
Never liked FF that much, other than FFX and Tactics, but Tactics isn't really 3D IMO.
Metroid... I'll give you that one. But I've never been that huge into the series other than Metroid Prime 1.
MGS is the only game that's listed that I think really improved on itself greatly by going 3D. So... that one.
But not in that list, Duke Nukem was so much better in 3D than in sidescroll.

When it first came out 3D was something new to bring to games, wether you like it or not it was a pivital step forward for the genre, the 2d-3d jump is always a big step some games don't pull off well.

Whoa calm down Mr. Thompson, can you honestly say GTA 3 wasnt groundbreaking without laughing?
I would say Zelda because it really gave a better sense of exploration with OoT and Majora's Mask as well as an incredible atmosphere.mo0ksiYeah, all the little places you could go and things you could find. Even now when I think about it it amazes me
Shinobi and Outrun.Panzer_ZweiGood call on Shinobi. I loved the PS2 game, and have no idea why it wasn't well-received.
