Whats the best RPG type
Real time (Demon Souls + Mass effect)
Turn based (FF13)
Hybrid (Valkyiria Chronicles and Resonance of fate)
I think real time is the best, and find most pure turn based games out dated.
Hybrid ones I do like though.
This topic is locked from further discussion.
I like all of them if done right. examples of the best:
Turn based: Paper Mario series and Baten Kaitos Series
Real Time: Borderlands, Diablo II, and more
Hybrid: Tales of Symphonia if that counts
Lately I have began to wonder if I like the REALLY simple turn based battles because FF X feels pretty stale now. The game is not great because of battle, its great because of story. On the other hand turn based games like Baten Kaitos and Paper Mario are amazing and so much fun. Other than those good turn based ones, I would prefer real time I guess. Hyrbids are meh usually.
The trusty GS polls are letting me vote as much as I want so I voted once for real time and once for turn based :P.
[QUOTE="CajunShooter"]Poll is major fail for not having Strategy LoG-Sacrament...strategy rpg's are usually turn based. Well with the TC's definition of turned based being FFXIII, SRPGS are clearly not turn based.

EDIT: personally, id include ffxiii as a hybrid battle system.
SRPG is my favorite genre, so I have to go with turn-based.
neither is better than the other, though.
Real TIme if I can pause (think dragon age) true turn based often get a little stale towards the end espically if the game doesn't allow you to design your own characters.
Mass Effect is also hybrid i guess, there is pause functionDark-Ancient
Only in PC right? And is that function in ME2?
turn based. I love almost every turn based RPG, especially SRPGs from NIS. Hybrids and action RPGs can be fun too and I buy pretty much every RPG this gen, but I usually enjoy turn based combat systems much more
Question(s):
What is the difference between ME1 and ME2's combat? Can you "pause" the game in both? Do you control multiple characters (PC exclusive feature in ME1 to my knowledge) in ME2 as well?
Turn Based and we have games like Jagged Alliance (considered an RPG by some), Fallout 1+2, Arcanum and Pokemon
Real Time has games like Baldurs Gate, most MMOs (there are some turn based mmos out there), Demons Souls, Planescape torment
I like both but I think I prefer Turn Based

ME2 has ammo, nerfed biotics, "heavy weapons" and overall better gunplay. In addition you no longer gain exp or money from killing enemies in ME2. Both Mass Effects play like a third person shooter with RPG elements, and unfortunately that means you cant switch characters, although you can give basic commands like use this skill or go here. You can pause the game in both to give commands and even get a clear shot at the enemy, or at least you can in the second.
voted for hybrid, cos i like both old and new Fallouts the best. older were strictly turn-based, while the new ones are real-time, even with VATS included.
Jagged Alliance
Maroxad
that was one awesome game.

They are part real time, and part turn based.
Think Valkyria chronicles. Were each side has a turn were they move, but when they move the enemy can shoot you.
Or the run and gun system of Resonance of fate (decide their path, then fire in real time)
You could even put most mmo styl e in here (and games like Dragon Age), were you select your persons action, but there is a delay, and you trade 1 blow for 1 blow with your enemy.
Turn-based, having real-time combat sacrifices a lot of depth that turn-based can only have. Some games work fine with real-time combat, but usually I can't stand how shallow it is compared to turn-based combat. I don't play RPGs to rampage around I want depth and turn-based combat supplies that.

Ah thanks for the info. I was hoping that ME2 had only the one character to control (and worry about) but I guess I have to give directions :P. I never have liked playing more than one or commanding a group of characters. I like having my one character to control and thats it :P. Also how do you level up in ME2 then?

You dont really need to give commands to your other party members. While stupid, your AI companions should have no problems taking care of themselves. Your party members are mostly useless outside of their skills when I played. (60%-80% of the gunfire damage on my playthrough came from me a biotic (mage))
You level up by completing missions. on my playthrough I gained about 75%-100% of the required exp to level per mission.

I agree. Also, I cant wait for the sequel, which will hopefully come out next year.

So it's basically what FF13 is?FF13 was almost completely traditional turnbased, except for a special. So its still turnbased.
What are you talking about? FFXIII wasn't turn based. Although the actions required time to charge, no turns were taken ... it was practically real time with a command system.
Pen and paper. And when it comes to video games, whichever feels more like a pen and paper game, regardless of its origin, graphic styl3 or mechanics.
This. There's no way FF13 was turn based. I would not have bought it if so.What are you talking about? FFXIII wasn't turn based. Although the actions required time to charge, no turns were taken ... it was practically real time with a command system.

Did you even play it?Its more of a hybrid than anything. You're still commanding one character at a time, but the way that characters can intercept and disrupt enemies from dealing damage makes battles have better flow.
