Not saying the heart wasn't there but there are a lot of people who give to charity for the publicity. I'm sure the intentions were good but it's also good for buisness and image to be known for giving so much away.
That said, all companies are bent on greed. It's buisness. Profit and revenue is their aim. Can't say Sony or Nintendo aren't just as greedy. It's a just a matter of position right now.

Considering he stepped down from MS to dedicate more time to his charity I would say it is more then just publicity.

Except when you give away 28,000,000,000 dollars like Bill Gates. You can say bye bye to those 28,000,000,000 dollars.
Considering he stepped down from MS to dedicate more time to his charity I would say it is more then just publicity.spinecatonHence why I didn't say he specifically was doing it for his public image just that there are some that do. It's not to say it didn't help when he was in the position he was in.
i hate how everyone calls MS greedy... i mean what company is not trying to get money? sony, nintendo and microsoft are all big businesses and all of them wnat to make a lot of money with the least amount of effort (thats how business works)
If MS isn't greedy then why is their console the same price as the PS3 with less hardware and why do they charge to play online? Why are all add-ons for the 360 all force people to buy only specific ones made by MS?
PS3 you get a bluray drive, WiFi, charge and play controllers, a web browser, free online gaming, can use any brand HDD, can make your own themes for free or download free ones from the web, and you can use any mic.

Because they charge for everything and you must buy all add-ons from them.
because people pay for it. If enoughpeople were paying 600 dollars for the ps3 sony would continue to charge that for it. btw there is a 200 dollar 360 for people who don't want to pay for the elite. If MS isn't greedy then why is their console the same price as the PS3 with less hardware and why do they charge to play online? because their CONSOLE is actually not as much as the ps3 slim... dont compare the most expensive 360 with the cheapest ps3 ;)because people pay for it. If enoughpeople were paying 600 dollars for the ps3 sony would continue to charge that for it. btw there is a 200 dollar 360 for people who don't want to pay for the elite. Don't want to pay for the elite? Those are not the right words for what you are getting at. I don't want to pay my taxes. If I don't want to pay for something, I'm most likely not going to pay for something similar to it. :?[QUOTE="patriots7672"]

Regardless, Bill Gates is known for being one of the most ruthless business people out there and his philanthropy wont change that. Its a shame that so few billionaires donate money though.

Before praising Bill Gates as a philanthropist you might want to do some research on how he got rich. The anti-competative business actions and other illegal activities he's been involved in. He's also heavily involved in the new way of doing business that unfortunately is how business is done in the USA these days. Buying lobyists and politicians.

There is a difference between an individual and a corporation. As an individual, I am sure almost every CEO, or whatever, if a good person. However, when a CEO is running a corporation, they have a legal obligation to ensure the company makes as much money as possible in as short a time as possible. Often this means ignoring social/moral responsibilities, breaking certain laws, and literally enacting policies that can harm people and society. It is the dominant flaw in our system right now. Ultimately, any corporation will inevitably do harm.
I would also point out that when you are as rich as Bill Gates, the interest and investments alone is more money than you or I could possibly comprehend. I mean, what would ANYONE do with, say, 50 billion dollars? That is such an insane amount of money that even giving half of it away, is more money than you or I would know what to do with. At that point you don't even have to do anything at all. Your bank account is so massive it has its own force of gravity that just natually sucks in other money.
So yes, I applaud Bill Gates for all his charitable endeavours, and have non doubt about his good nature. However, MS is still a corporation, and an illegal monopoly that only exists today because they have so much profits that not even the US government can stop them anymore.
Philanthropy is just another word for tax evasion.clubsammich91
Donating around 28 Billion (with a B) and building one of the biggest charity organizations in the wolrd is hardly "another word for tax evasion".

Honestly, you're an idiot. As for Gates, a lot of people dont realise just how much he gives to charity. Public image or not, he still does it. You dont need to give away 28 Billion dollars for public image. :-PThis. Donating some pocket change doesn't change the fact that their business practices are more than questioned. Also charity is overrated, charity hardly solves any problem other than allowing rich people to gain support and avoid taxes. What MS does with its money does not negate what they do to make it.

[QUOTE="RedruM_I"]Also charity is overrated, charity hardly solves any problem other than allowing rich people to gain support and avoid taxes.IronBassThis part was sarcasm, wasn't it? No, we have more charity organizations in the world now than in any other time in history but we also have more social problems than in any other time in history. Charity for charity is just a political gimmick, it doesn't solve any real problem.
it doesn't solve any real problem.RedruM_IBut it helps. Specially if we are talking about one of the biggest charity organizations in the world. Saying that's overrated is nonsense.

Saying that's overrated is nonsense. That it helps it's an illussion and that's what they want us to think. If an organization or a government donates to charity you can bet that they trade policies or work labor practices are far from fair. Of course they wouldn't care to risk anything on making the world a place with more justice because they'll lose money so they give to charity to create an image that the rest of the world can't resist to praise. I say it's all BS. I'm not saying caritable people doesn't exist but that this big charity organizations where rich people and governemnts keep using as a publicity mean are all BS and a part of the problem rather than a part of the solution.

I know that sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees.RedruM_IThe day you help an ammount of people remotely close to what those organizations do I'll take your word seriously. Until that... not that much.
Well, they're all trying to get money, but Sony is not the one charging an arm and a leg for their proprietary accessories. They are not the ones who force you to buy their proprietary hard drive. They are not the ones who charge you to play online. Sooo, as you can see they are both trying to make money but in different ways.i hate how everyone calls MS greedy... i mean what company is not trying to get money? sony, nintendo and microsoft are all big businesses and all of them wnat to make a lot of money with the least amount of effort (thats how business works)

No thanks I would keep taking care of the people I care, I think that's one of the most noble things a man can do and keep away from those political parades people mistakingly call altruism. I don't care if the people who listens to them listens to me or not.

And at that time, a PS3 cost about 840 dollars to make
I hate this arguement, things aren't simply black or white, there are tons of businesses that treat their costumers really good, with great prices and support, then there are companies that constantly rip you off. I'm not even trying to get into a Sony vs MS debate here, I'm just saying the "it's business" card isn't that linear.i hate how everyone calls MS greedy... i mean what company is not trying to get money? sony, nintendo and microsoft are all big businesses and all of them wnat to make a lot of money with the least amount of effort (thats how business works)

Thats bill gates, not MS...
And thats great and all but tbh if you had so much money that you literally had no idea what to do with it. So much you actually want to get rid of it, you'll give it away.
we'd all do it, at least most of us would.
