I know that Bioshock isn't one of the most hyped games in the near future, but I do believe that is the most important. For me, right now, Bioshock is the only game that the 360 can lord over the PS3...screw Halo 3.

Why Halo 3 has recieved more hype than Bioshock is anyone's guess; hell, I would still rather play through SS2 again then play Halo!

It seems to me that the majority of gamers have no sense for good games; they seem to be satisfied playing generic shooters and redundant football games all the time...(just look at the sales figures for madden)

I am afraid  that Bioshock will be lost in the shuffle come this fall, with GTA IV (I am looking forward to this as well), and Halo 3 chomping up the cash. But I can be comforted in the fact that, at the very least, there are still a handful of gamers that celebrate System Shock's brilliance.... and thusly, will celebrate Bioshock's as well.

I only fear that games like SS2 and Bioshock are a dying breed...thoughts?

No. Bioshock is not a killer app. It will be a stupendous game but it will be overlooked by many because it does not follow the "popular" trend in shooters.

the truth is, that by its very nature and complexity, Bioshock will never be popular...especially on the Consoles....maybe on the PC, where there are a handfull of popular FPS/RPG hybrids like STALKER and dues ex, will the game be popular.  But I do not see it being popular on the 360.

games like Bioshock...arent a dying breed though.

STALKER just came out, and dues ex 3 is in the making...so no, FPS/RGP hybrids are not a dying breed.

TC that brought a tear to my eye. 360 owners should be glad they are getting what looks to be an amazing game. I am still holding out hope they go multi-plat with it so I don't have to upgrade my computer. There has been alot of SS2 love on the boards today.

I was a big fan of SS2, hence my anticipation for Bioshock. It's my #1 anticipated title, beating out BWii, SSBB, and even Crysis...I can't wait to make my way through Rapture, dodging plane hulls, splicers, security bots, and the like. As far as games like Bioshock being less and less prevalent, it's just the sad state of things the way the industry is going. Hell, I'm still aching for another Rocket Jockey, or another Magic Carpet 2, or another Starflight or Star Control II, or another Independence War...but such games are in an even worse position than Bioshock, being that they don't seem to get any spiritual sequels(or at least high-profile ones like Bioshock). However, I guess this is where we learn to develop our own games so that their legacy may not die out. (Let's not milk them too much, though, or they'll become the next mainstream titles...)

STALKER did very well, they are making either a sequal or an expansion to it, which is being announced at E3, but yeah, it was pretty succesfull, deffinetly much more so then System shock.  From what I heard it was very popular in eastern Europe (the devs are from Ukrain)

dues ex though, was very popular, especially recently, when they began selling it on Steam.

Really good post, man. As far as I am concerned non-casual games like Bioshock cannot get enough hype. It is good to know that immersive single player games have not been completely abandened in favor of cashing in on the online frag-fest craze. It is a reminder of what gaming is all about....you, the gamer, all alone, playing a role and being sucked into the game itself as you play your way through the twist and turns of a brilliantly scripted plot. THAT is what gaming is all about for me.

And that brings to the question: How should be define "killer-app"? I cannot look at the games that constitute the top best sellers of last year and call them "killer" with a straight face. And the sad part is that publishers and developers will continue to dish out garbage until there is some sort of gaming enlightenment and the masses tell them (cough, EA, cough) where to put it.

Even though I'll probably never get a 360 or upgrade my PC anytime soon, I really, REALLY want this game to succeed massively and be 'the next big thing', so that others try to follow in its footsteps. I'd rather a ton of Bioshock clones than a ton of Halo clones. It would make me a very happy geek indeed. It'll likely never happen, but I can sure as hell wish.

what they should do with bioshock...is release it over Steam, where a large amount of people have already played dues ex, a similar game, which was re-released over Steam, this way they can bring the game to a group of people who have some experience with these type of games.

Won't be a killer app unless MS markets the heck out of it.....and have them produce a "Mad World" commercial for the game :P

Anyway, from a gamer's prespective this game is simply KILLER. I can't wait for it, the more I read up on it, the more I get excited. I just downloaded the HD version of that 7 mins gameplay vid, and I'm really loving it. The game's atmosphere is just awesome and the gameplay seems like intense fun.

Games like Bioshock tend not to sell for some reason. Though with the way 360 games sell, I wouldn't be surprised if it passes the 1 million mark

I swear that if MS promotes it like they did with Gears, it will. First, XBL Marketplace videos (more than 1), then a demo, then TV commercials and advertisements on gaming sites. If they do that, I'm very certain the game will sell a lot.

It'll be great but it won't sell well, I mean MS bought Viva Pinata its own damn TV show and that didn't do anything (judging by the fact I saw it for $20 Canadian last week).

Except Viva Pinata isn't really centered around the 360's audience; although, it is a good step in broading the audience. Bioshock screams 360 fanbase.

that contradicts the entire purpose of selling a lot in the first place....advertisement costs a ton of money.

The worst part is, the type of game bioshock is, they cant and wont release a demo for it.

I didnt mean specifically gameplay-wise. I know it's different. I meant that it's a Mature (read: bloody violence :P ) FPS. But I don't understand how a demo will hurt sales?

Because Bioshock is so different compared to the average console FPS chances are it will scare the living s*** out of the average 360 owner and they'd lose a bunch of sales. Without a demo they can sell the game based off of pretty graphics.

Okay, first of all, Ayn Rand is an idiot, and if anything, that it's based on her stories is the worst part of the game. That said, it looks extremely good. The water effects are very nice and the lighting and atmosphere is spectacular. This is, without a doubt, the most brutal, vicious, gorey game I've ever seen. I love it. If I ever get a PC that can chew this game up, I will pick it up without a doubt...it's extremely unfortunate to me that it's only on 360 as far as consoles go.

I agree entirely that this game owns the piss out of Halo 3 though...unless Halo 3 brings the smack down in a large way with some updated screenshots that make our eyes weep blood, and some gameplay reviews that say it's the best FPS on the planet and has superceded HL2 as the best shooter of this decade or something.

I've never played System Shock, but I bet it's probably a lot like Half Life...one of those things better left to the past. I played the original Halo a few months ago though a PC demo and GOD was that game crap, totally outdated...seriously, people always say older games are best. Half Life is better than Half Life 2, Halo 1 is the best in the series, etc, but I'm far more interested in the sequels than the old crap we dig up out of a murky grave.

(seriously, Halo is outdated! The physics, mechanics, AI, weapons...everything is outdated extremely badly)

Bioshock won't go unnoticed though. Just like Mass Effect it will receive due attention. Halo 3 will probably get double or triple their most hopeful sales figures (probably combined), but they won't get lost amongst titles like Lost Planet (blech) and GRAW 2 (enough with the Tom Clancy already). It's colorful enough, it's shocking enough, it's beautiful enough...it's really an exciting looking game.

Like the poster above stated, System Shock is almost NOTHING like Half-Life. No RPG elements in HL, for instance, nor was the atmosphere as creepy IMO. And about Bioshock not having a demo, I wouldn't worry about it given that System Shock 2 has one.

Wow, I am speechless... I know this is not the best place to debate philosophy... you know what? Meet me in OT sometime; that would be the best place to dissect your belief system and mental functionality piece by piece, in the hopes of rearranging you in to someone else. Someone better. Or maybe you can explain your reasoning to me? Doubtful...

Umm System Shock is not much like half-life at all. And if you aren't a complete graphics whore and you can get past the outdated graphics, you get a game that is vastly superior to almost all games out these days. In the case of SS2 you get a game superior to pretty much every game out these days, and the only ones that I believe come close to it are also older games.
