Stalker had that eerie at the same time plausible atmosphere that just creeped you out.

Stalker is the better of the two ;)

Bioshock has nice atmosphere to its world but stalker on max settings an bioshock can't touch it. They may have not hit there target with stalker with all that they wanted but the game was still damn impressive over all.

FEAR just sucks period.

Hated that game.

I thought fear was pretty damn good.

Sure it was repedative as hell, but the combat was freaking awesome and intense, its visuals were great, and the scares were quite good. Not to mention the Story in the end was actually pretty good.

The biggest issue was the dull locations, messy story inbetween start and finish, and the MP was so-so imo.

I personally didn't find it scary really. It was pseudo-psychological, and had scares more in common with Doom 3 that gave you frights rather than a truly eerie feeling that STALKER or Silent Hill gives.

And....I just don't find the story interesting. It's one of Monolith's weakest. You know those "Your mum is your brother's father's sister's cousin's nephew's daughter's brother" jokes you probably recited at school? It's like Monolith took it seriously and ran with it...whilst watching the American remake of The Ring.

Indeed the combat was fun and all, but yeah....story usually plays a really important part for me in video games.

Monolith did much better with Condemned though. Whilst extremely repetitive, that's where all the scares were at, and the story was pretty darn cool to boot. I really can't wait for Condemned 2: Bloodshot, because that's seriously going to rock our socks.

Yea I cant disagree with you about that. Still I thought the 'twist' near the end, or the ending pretty good (I wasent expecting it), though I agree with you on the scares. There were certain scares that scared the **** of me - e.g. Alma appearing at the top of the ladder in the first level, or appearing for a second in a lift - but most scares were meh. Even the 'creepy' unsettling nature of the game didnt stick. I do wish there was more of those cyber ninjas though. They were freaking awesome.

Oh and condemned. That was GREAT. Indeed it was pretty repetitive, but the story was pretty cool (if not a little predictable), but told very well. However the whole crime scene thing was a drag in my opinion. But damn bludgeoning hobos has never been so visceral. Condemned 2 looks crazy as hell. I really hope they keep up the psychological thrills, and great combat. Hell I hope the game is pulled off as well as that abandonded depardment store level. That was a classic.

Lol too many people got scared on the Alma-on-ladder part. For some reason I took that one easy, but there was one other I can't remember that kinda just caught me off guard.

Not sure about Project Origin (didn't think much of the 17 minute demo), but I know Condemned 2 will deliver. That CSI stuff is getting a total makeover to make it a worthy minigame, those tar-monsters look extremely messed up, and finishing moves are getting an overhaul (not like I never got tired of crushing people's skulls with mine. Always cringed at that). Multiplayer to boot too, so you know this is gonna be an underappreciated winner. As for psychological thrills -- one of the things they mentioned was that you could watch TV (not sure if it's like The Darkness or not), but sometimes the TV would send cryptic messages rather than the play whatever's on the network. Always had a fear of that happening to me, and damn, it's in this game.

Did I mention there's Hobo Fight Club? It's a survival mode.....killing hobos

This could easily be my favourite game next year.

Oh, and there's a trailer for Condemned 2 that came out on Halloween if you missed it. You should check it out. I swear I saw some guy turning demonic a la those people on the Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Anyway, it's 3am. So I best go hit the sack.

Only played Bioshock demo so hard to say anything about that, but Stalker definately had a great atmosphere, there were dozens of little things that made it so good. The brilliantly done flashlight effect really added to it, it has propably the most realistic looking buildings I've seen in a game with amazing detail in the walls, steampipes etc. the lighting effects are beautifull(thunderstorms, bonfires etc.), not to mention the voices in the labs and other little contributing factors like not being able to move fast because being encumbered. I really liked the atmosphere tho it's still not the best I've experienced imo.

Yea Project Origin looks pretty 'meh' imo. Condemmned 2 does look pretty mind bending though, which is sweet. And MULTIPLAYER? Now that is going to be interesting. Cryptic TV? Sweet. A bit of an evolution in ingame tv from Max Payne's TV soapies lol.

And yea the hobo fight ring sounds awesome. Its somthing the original was missing lol. I might just checkout this new trailer, then go into hibernation.

Hmm, I say Stalker. Bioshock is a bit too...kitschy. Stalker nails the desolate, grim, abandoned atmosphere perfectly. Only perhaps some of the monster designs look a bit nasty.

Yeah, Condemned 2 looks surprisingly awesome. I absolutely loved the fisticuffs in Riddick, the counters in particular. You just feel so badass when you walk up to a guy with a gun, put it under his chin and force him to execute himself. Condemned 2 looks to have tons of that stuff. I kinda consider it a spiritual sequel, cause Riddick is all about the badassery.

I picked STALKER awhile ago but for some reason I thought a lot of people were going to pick bioshock. I guess I was wrong. After beating STALKER I had to take like a 2 month break before I went and played it. I dont know what it is about that game but it just gives me the chills. Plus it helps that I have seen shows on chernobyl. So the game kind of feels real to me.

I agree. The facehugger noise was one of the most chilling noises I have ever heard in a game. And the fact that they were hard to spot didn't help.

STALKER, probably in the first half, Bioshock in the Last half. STALKER falls apart at the end and tunrs into a three hour gunfight instead of a cool 'your weapons suck' scary game.

STALKER's atmosphere really soaked in. In Bioshock I just blew past everything. In STALKER I had to approach everything really slowly because a big mistake could easily kill you quick if you didn't know what you were doing. I remember times where I completely lost control of what was happening and I just went crazy shooting everything in a frenzy.

Sorry to be late but I got Stalker not long ago and this thread activated my "reply" brain area. So this thread kind of acknowledged that Stalker is indeed the authentic 10/10 game in the pack.

I suppose games are not rated only on their intrinsic value, but on how they will be received by the public. Example: Stalker on it's own gaming merit is worth 10/10. HalfLife2 7/10. But 20% of players will be detered by the system requirements and bugginess of Stalker (-2/10) and 20% will be convinced by the fond memories of HL1 and commercial hype around HL2 (+2/10). So, Stalker 10-2= 8/10, HalfLife2 7+2=9/10. That's how I understand game reviewing is done.

How many years before a game that's just as good ? if I try to remember other great games to put alongside with stalker: Shadowrun (super nes and megadrive, two diferent versions that were both good), Fallout, Deux Ex, Vampires Bloodlines. So about 5 years before another quasi artistic action RPG seems a good bet, aside of Clear sky :)

I thought the first two Silent Hills had the best atmosphere.

But between those two i'd choose S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Stalker ftw.

Condemned owns them both though.

Edit: argh how could I forget AvP 2

Monolith FTW, although FEAR wasn't that scary IMO.

As immersive as Bioshock is, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is just ridiculous. I actually felt weird walking around Chernobyl. I can't really explain it, but the atmosphere was so damn palpable. It was frighteningly realistic for all its strangeness, and you never, ever, ever felt safe.

If the environment didn't kill you, the bandits with their awesome and tough AI would. Seriously, after I stopped a session of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I had to shake off the weird vibes that game gave me. Truly excellent stuff.

Lonelynight

It gives me the same feeling too

I know people are going to flame me for this, but Stalker is probably one of my favorite shooters ever, easily exceeding HL 2 in atmosphere, gameplay and A.I. imo.

FEAR just sucks period.

Hated that game.

I thought fear was pretty damn good.

Sure it was repedative as hell, but the combat was freaking awesome and intense, its visuals were great, and the scares were quite good. Not to mention the Story in the end was actually pretty good.

The biggest issue was the dull locations, messy story inbetween start and finish, and the MP was so-so imo.

agreed. I prefer good A.I. and good gameplay to story anyway.
