half life 2 set the bar for immersiveness in games
bioshock raised the bar IMO and pulled it off with a better story than half life 2 had

Apples and oranges. They are both fruit, but taste differently. Both are equally good in their own right and at what they do.
For one, you get magazines full of ammo in HL2 with never a fear of running too short, you only get very limited ammo in Bioshock.
even halo is better than half life 2
proof: http://gamerankings.com/itemrankings/simpleratings.asp
bioshock = 4
halo = 11
half life 2 = 14
how can people blindly say bioshock isnt in half lifes class....bioshock is the ONLY fps i would put near half life....
everything half life does bioshock does better.......
i cant believe some of you are even saying half life has a better story.....did any of you actually play bioshock?

But Metal Gear Solid IS a corny stealth game with 3 hours of gamplay and 10 hours of IN GAME cut scenes. That's why ahh love it! *Al Pacino voice*

imo a great story was the only think bioshock had going for it when compared to hl. in other areas i found hl 1 & 2 much the better. the story of bioshock was quite impactful but overall for me it couldn't be comapred to hl. in fact i had more fun while playing ss2 than what i had when i played bioshock (i didn't face any problem while playing bioshock).
PC gamers will say no
most console gamers have never played half life
Me? i think Bio SHock is better

Well, I'm a PC gamer and I'd say that Bioshock made a hellova job beating Half Life 2. Times change, new games and ideas are coming. But don't forget that Valve is still there, and I'm pretty sure that they're fully commited to Half Life 3.
Altough, my personal opinion is that no shooter, or game could top Half Life 1, which is, again, IMO, probably the best game ever, on any platform.

I came dangerously close to running out of ammo in the Ravenholm level in Half-Life 2. Other than that, I agree. Two completely different games.

Replace "game" with "first-person game" in your last comment, and I'd agree. Half-Life 1 was astonishing, and definitely the greatest (and most ground-breaking) first person game ever, but I've personally had 2 games with different view-points that I just had more overall fun with, those, of course, being Diablo and Diablo II.

Dude, I wrote "In My Opinion".
Okay, maybe I overrated it too much calling it as the best game ever. Fallout 2 is also my big candidate :P
Hmmm..........
I dunno. I wouldn't say it has Beat HL2 exactly.....
Come to think of it, nah methinks it didn't beat it. Comes extremely close though.
HL2 methinks is still the best FPS around, with Bioshock nipping at its heels.
skrat_01
why's that? Because of "teh Phyzix"? And what the hell, why did is Half Life in modern time, and then Half Life 2 is all futuristic? I never understood that.

Ahh no because it is an extremelly well crafted shooter, and yes it has been the sole greatest until this year - because of the high standards it set.And HL2 is set a few years in the future after the alien combine occupation of earth...... (Hell the Combine soldiers carry real world MP7 smgs). Like HL1 its a mix of both. They are both sci fi shooters dont cha know.
dude have you played HL2 from start to finish?

yeah xbox version. I just didn't see anything that groundbreaking about it, it was great fun but it just seemed so boring at times, i really love the game though seriously, and blue shift, and HL1, and opposing force, and decay.

I don't get it--didn't Half-Life 2 ship in 2004? Shouldn't BioShock be a general improvement on a game that shipped nearly three years earlier?
But even if it is, it can't occupy the space that Half-Life 1 and 2 do, because the HL games towered so completely over their contemporaries. I don't know, it seems a little like asking, "Which was better: Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3?" I mean, in every technical, measurable way, SMW exceeds SMB3. But SMB3 occupies a special place in the minds of those who remember it, because it was such an important game: the high point of the last generation of NES games, a redemption for the ultimately mediocre SMB 2, a huge step up, graphically, from the vast majority of NES games, and so on. It's hard for me to say that Super Mario World was "better" than SMB3 when I got much bigger thrills from playing SMB3.
I'll say this: as much as I completely adore BioShock, I think the upcoming Orange Box will crush it, at least in terms of lasting value--provided they don't charge an arm and a leg for it.
Bioshock now stands with the giants of gaming history, in which Half Life 2 is already in. These games compliment eachother; they don't compete.
I don't really understand the comparison, they are two very different types of games, released in different time periods, what is there to compare? It's like asking if Madden '07 killed Fifa '04, they are both in the same genre but still very different type of sport games.

What?! The core game is the same, i've been gaming on consoles my whole life so playing with a mouse and keyboard would have taken away from the experience for me.

The RPG elements are very simplified, however. Nothing in the order of Dues Ex or SS2.
