I'm gonna borrow a little from the comment section and say, ME2&3 were a disservice to ME1. :P

Go bacjk to your roots Bio and all will be just peachy - with that said, I do look forward to a next gen Mass Effect. :D

Discuss if you wish.

The Story.

BioWare: "calling the next game Mass Effect 4 is a disservice"

"The game does not have to come after. Or before."

BioWare does not want you to refer to the next Mass Effect game as Mass Effect 4. Doing so would imply it was a sequel to Commander Shepard's story.

But that doesn't mean it will be a prequel, either.

"To call the next game Mass Effect 4 or ME4 is doing it a disservice and seems to cause a lot of confusion here," BioWare community manager Chris Priestly wrote on the company's forums.

"We have already said that the Commander Shepard trilogy is over and that the next game will not feature him/her. That is the only detail you have on the game. I see people saying 'well, they'll have to pick a canon ending'. No, because the game does not have to come after. Or before. Or off to the side. Or with characters you know. Or yaddayaddayadda."

The next Mass Effect game is in development at BioWare Edmonton, which worked on Mass Effect 2 and 3 side-quests and the latter's excellent multiplayer.

BioWare Edmonton boss Yanick Roy has since clarified Priestly's comments and dropped several hints that, despite not being a sequel, events in the next game would take place after those in Mass Effect 3.

1

My god, it's full of stars.

"Thinking of the next Mass Effect game as Mass Effect 4 would imply a certain linearity, a straight evolution of the gameplay and story of the first three games," he wrote. "That doesn't mean that events of the first three games and the choices you made won't get recognised, but they likely won't be what this new story will focus on.

"If you had three games centred around a group of key soldiers in the US army during World War I and then decided to make a game about another group of people during the Second World War, the games could have many points in common and feel true to one another," he continued.

"You likely would have to recognise how the events of the first war influenced the ones of the second, but you would not necessarily think of it as a sequel. Again, the analogy is not great, but what I'm trying to say is that the ME universe is so rich that we are not limited to a single track when coming up with a new story."

Questioned as to whether the next Mass Effect game would still feature the same galaxy, the same alien races, and honour the series' existing lore and history, Roy suggested it would.

"What makes it Mass Effect is indeed the alien races, the technology, the lore, history, etc. You can safely expect those in the next Mass Effect."

Firm information on the project, first announced by BioWare last September, won't be disclosed "for several more months".

"We don't have a firm communication timeline established at this point, but I don't expect it will be for several more months," Roy concluded. "Early in development, things fluctuate so much that any detail we communicate could have to be 'uncommunicated' a few months later. I think we'd rather have something solid to show by the time we step in the spotlight."

BioWare still has a significant (and likely final) Mass Effect 3 single-player DLC in the pipeline, along with another multiplayer update.

I'd like to see them expand on the big picture science fiction stuff; the concepts and all that jazz, and actually lowering the tone. Then you know, concentrating on blockbuster stuff, high and mighty nonsense that rubs poorly against the b-grade writing - which would be perfectly great if the tone was as consistent as it was in the first. Either way I'm curious, and I still have to finish the third. Hooboy.

I would like this trilogy to be less grand scale you know saving the entire galaxy and what not. Also not a N7 type soldier but more average. Maybe just a person on Omega that gets caught up with the Blue Suns or something and leads into a big adventure.

I loved both, but overall i prefer ME1.

ME1 - better story, better soundtrack (imo), better RPG elements and better exploration (loved exploring uncharted worlds with mako).

ME2 - better graphics, better gameplay and loved some characters.

Mass Effect is physical phenomenon that exist in game world, it's not attached to "shepard story" (i think since i only played ME1 begining and spoiled my self with ME3 ending), so i don't see how this is disservice and confuse people..... more people will be confused if it will be named diffrently. Or else they plan to place game in diffrent world (as after ME3 conclusions changes to universe are dramatic depending on player choose)

The new ME game will be a straight FPS, I think they don't want to call it mass effect to avoid any negative association with the sh8tstorm created by ME 3 and also to allow them to create an entirely new game that has zero associatons with previous incarnations so they can make the afore mention FPS game.

They can do Mass Effect 4, but couldn't even do a sequel to Jade Empire? I am not asking for 3 or 4 titles, just one game with updated graphic and gameplay is all I am asking for.

I'm not sure if he knows what a sequel is....

For example, his WW analogy is an analogy of a sequel. It takes place after the first and is influenced by the first thus sequel... It doesn't have to have the same characters or be close together in time. It just needs to be set in the same universe after the first to be considered a sequel. Lots of science fiction works do this, some even take place 10,000 years after the preceding book. And if they do that then they indeed have to take into consideration the 3 endings of Mass Effect 3.

Basically what I took from this is it's not a sequel, it's not a prequel, it's not a side story. It's nothing at the moment. They have no clue what they're going to do right now.

Whatever the story may be, I want it to be years before or after the Commander Shep saga. They have near endless possibilities with the universe to the extent where the trilogy can be easily dwarfed.

And it doesn't have to be a galaxy-trotting adventure either. I wouldn't mind a game being entriely centered around a place like Omega or the Citadel as long as those locations are overhauled with detail.

I'd be excited by either. There are so many rich opportunities in the pre-shep universe to set a story, but at the same time the shattered pieces of whats left after 3 is so intriguing ....

Eh, perhaps I'm just spoiled by Bungie dev'ed Halo Reach that included all that and it's just a FPS. :o C'mon Bio, you can do it. :P

And frankly, I don't think Bioware could do it well.

I would like a LOT of exploration. That's what I meant by more like ME1. Give me a lot of places to search or at least a few big areas like the citadel from the first. It pained me to see how they kept stripping away the citadel each sequel.

What? That makes no sense. I hope it occurs after to be honest, and that the story alot more personal so to speak. No hero of the galaxy stuff.
