The Story:

Star Wars: The Old Republicis going free to play. That doesn't mean BioWare andElectronic Artswon't nudge you to open your wallet in a myriad of ways. Now we know what those methods will be. The developer and publisher have revealed SWTOR's subscription versus free-to-play features.

The good news for gamers wary of the free-to-play label: SWTOR will offer all free players full access to class story content from level one through 50. Everything else will be limited in one way or another. Here's the breakdown:

  • Character Creation Choices:lmited
  • Operations: a paid weekly pass is required
  • Warzones: three per week or the purchase of a paid pass required
  • Flashpoints: open, butopen, but with limited rewards after three full reward Flashpoints per week
  • Space Missions: three per week or open with a paid weekly pass
  • Cargo Hold: gain and expand with Cartel Coins (which cost real money)
  • Inventory: limited, can be expanded with Cartel Coins
  • Crew Skills: one for free, additional available for purchase
  • Quick Travel: longer cooldown period, can be removed with paid purchase
  • Emergency Fleet Pass: no free access, must be purchased
  • Death: revives at the nearest med center are unlimited, but free players can only revive in the field five times. Additional field revives must be purchased with Cartel Coins
  • Item Equipping: most purple items locked to free players unless a license is purchased

Hmm. Curious to know how many Cartel Coins a revive will cost after those free five run out. Could definitely make death a real penalty in SWTOR -- which is actually both good and bad. BioWare says more details on free to play are coming soon.

From GameSpy

____________________

Man, I remember when this game came out, and everyone was all, "Finally, the game that will kill WoW." And it came out, had a good launch, and then it started losing subscribers by the truckload.

Now look at it. It's not even a year later and it's already adopting a pathetic Free 2 Play model so EA can milk it as long as they can before they shut it down.

Poor BioWare. Seeing that name come up before you played a game used to mean you were in for a good time. Now it just a brand for EA to slap on everything they can before they shutter the studios, and signals disappointing games like Dragon Age II, Mass Effect 3, and The Old Republic.

Meanwhile, the subscription-based MMO is alive and well in Pandaland (which is a great game, by the way), as WoW's subscribers are sitting pretty at over 10 million and ArenaNet is making money hand over fist with Guild Wars, a game with no subscription cost and one that actually doesn't suck.

What say you, System Warriors? Can BioWare redeem themselves, or should we just remember them as they were before EA takes them out behind the shed and does what needs to be done?

I knew that would happen, but for them spending so much money on it, cant really blame them. The thing I like is "The good news for gamers wary of the free-to-play label: SWTOR will offer all free players full access to class story content from level one through 50. " and im going to do just that and not pay a single penny nor play any PVP.

Who would waste their time on a subpar MMORPG from a subpar developer anyway?

I agree that making all of the story content free to play is great, but limiting your field revives, your quick travel, and your inventory unless you pay? That's just dickish. Hopefully this doesn't go over well and they change that bit.

WoW is the only subscription-based MMO that manages to make lots of money and stay alive. It's not a business model other MMOs should or can take.

The game was never free, it's still not free but has a free alternative. If it started off free then they implemented these things then you would have a point.

It's not doing any better than TOR in its prime. Just like TOR, Secret World is trying to earn back its production cost than making any profit. A lot worse sales, and about equal retention rate.

If the retention rate stays steady, it could stay subscription-based for a long time. I'll bet money it only cost a fraction of what TOR did.

Whereas before you had to pay indefinitely to play. Does it suck the way EA/Bioware are doing things? Looks terrible, but players who are interested to play for free never had the option before to even play this game without paying a dime, so moaning about possibly having to pay for some crap in the game now is superfluous.

That is the worst F2P model I can think of.

But since it's free I'll still enjoy the story aspects at least.

Every night in my dreams
I see you, I feel you
That is how I know you go on

Far across the distance
And spaces between us
You have come to show you go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

Love can touch us one time
And last for a lifetime
And never let go till we're gone

Love was when I loved you
One true time I hold to
In my life we'll always go on

Near, far, wherever you are
I believe that the heart does go on
Once more you open the door
And you're here in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

You're here, there's nothing I fear
And I know that my heart will go on
We'll stay forever this way
You are safe in my heart
And my heart will go on and on

It may be, although GW2 seems to be mostly about pvp and leveling. It's end game is pretty weak. SWTOR is more about leveling and end game, although it isn't stellar in end game either, but does have significantly more than GW2, although to access such you'll have to pay for it by the looks of it.

Not a fan of the genre, as I remember. :P Apparently Guild Wars is an MMO for people who hate MMO.

But I haven't played it myself, so I don't know how true that is. I remember the original being more like a single-player RPG than anything else, though.

I avoided WoW, because of the stigma that it was addicting. Because I can get pretty addicted to a solo game. Nowadays I don't see that as an issue. I enjoy p*ssy, drinking, and money too much to get addicted to a MMO.

 Just knowing you, you're not gonna dig Guild Wars 2's styIe of gameplay. It just does everything MMOs always did.... except better, and without subscriptions. Wait for Planetside 2 to get your MMO fix. It's a lot like Halo, and you like Halo.

I will take that bet. I WILL TAKE THAT BETjg4xchamp
You won't win. ;) And we should clarify something: Does getting it as a gift count? Because if I don't buy it, someone will buy it for me as a holiday gift or something, and I don't feel like telling everyone I know not to buy me Halo 4. :P

I reckon literally just do not play it. If it's gifted, or gamefly'd, or whatever, just don't play it at all.

Edit: Man, there should be even bets on this bet. It's gonna be f*cking epic.

You mean the F2P model they are implement which emphasizes keeping the subscription as the premier experience and tries to use the free to play to coerce people to subscribe as its method of drawing in more players? Yeah, they made that clear back when announced F2P. The only real new thing is the 5 deaths one. Its the only real one I personally need to look into before I decide if the F2P model is good for me or not. the game is good, It just didn't hold my interest enough consistently to warrant subscribing to it. Sorry for reading it and laughing at you anyways.

Bingo, you could trade it in shake. You could return it.

They should have followed LotrO's model....store points there can be earned by achievements, and also can be spent on things like removing the money cap, extra bank slots, new raid packs, cosmetic armor sets, flashpoint missions, or entire expansion packs. And to add to that, LotrO still offers a sub model, at a cheaper price, and also regularly does seasonal world wide events and regularly releases massive packs of content and expansions. They'd make out really well copying that, but EA just has no logic anymore

I'm not Shake. Don't insult me like that again.
