Seriously while I was playing through the single player campaign yesterday I was dumbstruck, with how they managed to blatantly rip off countless movies, such as Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Terminator 2, The Deer Hunter, Tropic Thunder etc........

I know this kind of thing happens all the time, but when they base a whole level off that famous scene in the Deer Hunter, it just makes me go facepalm.

How about some originality ? :|

There's thousands of movies out there, quit complaining that they rip off of movies, it's almost impossible not to, they all contain many similar cliches (as another poster said).

I thought the whole sailing downriver thing was a light-hearted homage to Apocalypse Now, if such a thing is possible.

You realise all those movies were based of an ACTUAL WAR that happened, I know, crazy right! The only scene I saw that was actually a rip off was the Deer Hunter bit.

Pretty sure Terminator 2 is not the only form of entertainment to have an action sequence involving a shotgun wielding motorcyclist who one hand cocks his shotgun.

They should've used the same connection infrastructure as MW2. MW2 wasn't perfect by any means, but it was as smooth as P2P can possibly get. Host migration worked perfect 90% of the time and there was no "game lobby closed" issue or "disconnected due to transmission error" bullcrap. I love Black Ops, but god they really messed up as far as the connection infrastructure goes.

Not exactly. in order for it to be a cliche it needs to be overused, now if these scenes are famous, but haven't been used in other mediums, they aren't cliches. Its just a straight ripoff job. Now something like the story of the ugly guy/girl getting a make over and winning the hot guy/girl, thats a cliche because its been used in MANY movies and novels. Now I havent seen Deer Hunter, so I cant relate, but unless these scenes have been over used in multiple movies, books, games, etc... they still arent cliches.

I can't think of a movie that did that before Fight Club. A Beautiful Mind did something similar a few years after, but I made a connection between Black Ops story and Fight Club far before the twist was shown

Yeah and it wasn't really a split personality with Mason he was just properly mental and thought Reznov was real.

Hans Zimmer in MW2. Ed Harris in Black Ops. You think they'll manage to throw enough cash around to get Sean Connery or Nicolas Cage for the next one?

And thanks for the spoilers.

TC's probably talking about Russian Roulette scene, which, arguably, isn't all that "rip-off" because, you know, it actually happened. i'm not sure about the exact quotes from the either, tho.

I'm not saying that it was based off of schizophrenia like Fight Club, it's more that the protagonist goes through several events with someone who he feels is real, gets into some trouble, blames everything on the imaginary person, finds out the person isn't real, and the story ends soon after

The scene from Black Ops and the scene from The Deer Hunter are so similiar it's not funny, the vietnamise dude in BO, even yells out Mao when he slaps Woods in the face, and they escape from the POW camp exactly the same way they do in the Deer Hunter and the way it starts off ( them being held underwater in cages ) is exactly what happens in the Deer Hunter also ! GOsh !

Deer Hunter is on my to-watch list so I will let you know if I feel the same to. then again, Call of Duty has been doing this since the first one. no one objected back then, they actually liked it in many cases.

i don't mind that they rip off movies, as long as it is in good taste.

i think ripping off similar scenes of other games is a worse offense though. darksiders did this a bit.

I don't know why but that happens to me ONLY if I play a seriously good game.:( It's like Activision hates me cuz I'm not buying their games new.:P

Also I seriously don't see how the campaign is special or any good. Then again, I'm no fan of COD anyways.:P

No they were not similar. So what the guy said "Mao", that's what they say, the Deer Hunter didn't invent Vietnamese. And the underwater cages were a real thing. And the escape was nothing like deer hunter, AT ALL. There was no Russian guy waiting forthem in deer hunter. There was no log in black ops. And in the deer hunterm de niro made them put in more bullets, in black ops, they just predicted the bullet was in the right place do IDK where you got the same. And no one got beat to death with a pipe in the deer hunter. No guuy took a chunk off his head in black ops. IDK where you're getting that they were so similar. Russian Roulette was an actual thing that happened in Veitnam, the Deer Hunter didn't invent it.

The worst was probably The Deer Hunter and the russian roulette scene. De Niro and Walken being forced to play.

Oh really ? Then how did they escape in the Deer Hunter ? Did they just ask " Sir may I please be excused ? No the Robert De Niro character asked to play roulette with 3 bullets and then he shot the guards and they escaped down the river, Black Ops completely ripped it off.

Movie homages are nothing new in COD. COD1, 2, and WAW had a crapload of SPR and Enemy at the Gates nods, it's just what games like COD and MOH are about. Infact, most WW2 games with a D-Day level pretty much take from the famous scene from SPR.

As for BO's campaign, it's probably one of my favorite in the series, and it's only natural to include some similar setpieces to Vietnam War movies in a game with a major section in Vietnam.

People go out of their way to bash COD here. It's not the best FPS series, and MW2 was a piece of junk, but sometimes I feel posters here try to find any way they possibly can to hate on it.
