Wow, Blizzard released revenues today of 1.2 Billion, not to shabby for a software company. The vast majority of that isn't even counted in the official PC NPD numbers...

PC Gaming dead or actually outpacing console gaming?
Watch out, consoleites. This is the year of the Lich King, Starcraft 2, Spore and many others....

15 x 12 x 6,500,000 = 1,170,000,000 Just WoW
I say 6.5m because that's probably about the amount of people that are paying every month. I know i myslef take 2-4 month hiatuses every once in a while. It's actually a lot less becuase you also have to account for all the BC sales
Didn't NPD say that total PC sales amounted to 970 million dollars? So WOW alone surpassed that?
Why do we use NPD again?
agentfred
pc sales, alot of that moeny is likely from subscriptions, not sales

Just to be fair, the 1.2 billion is blizzard's overall revenue. Not just the money it made from WoW.
But yeah, NPD is useless for judging pc sales

Not really, NPD doesn't include the monthly fee for WoW. They just include the sales. World of Warcraft's subscriptions monthly gives millions and millions to Blizzard. They only judge retail sales. So much of blizzards revenue comes from monthly subcriptions.
Question is, where would PC gaming be with WoW and Blizzard. What if MS, Sony, or EA's stepped up to the billion dollar plate and bought them instead of Vivendi?
Will Bioware pay off for EA like Guitar Hero and Blizzard have paid off for their suitors(which are now merging)
P.S. WoW is digital crack, where's Jack Thompson now?

Its not only WOW, other Blizzard games still sell a huge amount even today....every Blizzard game is still sold in nearly every gaming related store..Hell, Before WOW came out, Blizzard's revenue was alreaedy 750 million...
But I do think its kind of funny, that Blizzard's revenue alone surpassed NPD PC retail numbers...I think this is good proof that these numbers are fairly worthless when it comes to PC gaming.

again, npd only tracks sales, most of that moeny isnt coming from sales, its coming from monthly subs

they only track retail sales, not even DD, according to several devs, they are getting more sales off of DD, than Retail at this point.

NPD is only for North America where PC Gaming = Xbox Gaming in Japan.
Good point 1.2 billion from worldwide sales.
But I disagree that PC gaming is NA is anywhere near the low level of Xbox Gaming in Japan.

No, they actualy have 10mln subscribers, so there really are 10mln people paying every month. This number proves that, despite what some console fanboys were claiming. Remember that half of WoW users are in Asia and the montly fees there are half of what they are in US and Europe.

Even though it's most all WoW it's still impressive that they make up that big of a chunk of the games industry. Hopefully they're using that cash to expand and make more games.Lazy_Boy88ACtually they aren't using their cash to make more games... the only new game other than WOW we will get is Starcraft 2... No Warcraft 4, no Diablo 3...

We want perfect games or near perfect. Why would they work on WC4 while their RTS teams are working on SC2? Same could go for D3.

Yes thats true, but Warcraft 3 TFT came out in 2003 (in other words, 5 years before), and Diablo 2 LoD even more 7 years before (it came out in 2001)I think that after 5 years a sequel (and 7 years for Diablo) is deserved.

Actually it was 1.2 billion just from WOW and 1.5 billion overall. With asia players paying like 8-10$ it makes up for the difference.

no, i doubt it is, unless they see buthering there story as a good thing.
They make so much money and they haven't released a new game (not including the BC Expansion) in almost 4 years.
Damn some companies would be out of business if they went that long.
Pretty impressive.

Well, they were like that for a long time. WC3 was out 4 years after Starcraft afterall. Blizzard can afford to take time, altough it's possible only on PC, it wouldn't work on consoles

Well, with recent release of Valve Steamworks, I have a feeling that we might see Steam market sales aswell soon enough.
If the Steam market is anywhere near we might expect (ie surprisingly big), gaming industry might be on track towards a pretty big (r)evolution.
I wonder if it's possible for Blizzard to buy itself out of Activision and Vivendi the way Bungie did?
Then again, the WoW servers are probably owned by Vivendi.

It doesnt matter, Blizzard is allowed so much freedom it even publishes and funds its own games. I imagine Viviendi has figured out by now that the best thing to do, is just leave Blizzard alone and let them do their own thing.
[QUOTE="Lonelynight"]Hope they make WC 4 in the near futureZero5000X
Thats the dream... I remember them saying that WC4 was one of the things they were considering doing after SC2, but I personally think we'll see Diablo 3 first.
Gods I hope so. A 3D Diablo? Yeesh, forget Ninja Gaiden, forget God of War, forget Heavenly Sword. The Diablo 3 would be the god of all action games.

True, but sometimes I wonder if the decision to produce games set solely in Blizzard's three franchises (Diablo, SC, WC) isn't part of a mandate by Vivendi.
I would love to see them try and create a new IP.

I would like them to buy themselves out of Vivendi. Vivendi's cool but I'd like to see Blizzard on their own. With the money they make from WoW they could become a mega-publisher to rival EA and Activision-Blizzard (or whatever they'd be called if Blizz left). With Blizzard's high standards I think they would be the best publisher.
