Blizzard, who some people mistakenly think "have lost it", when in fact, they have always been greedy arrogant motherfuckers, continues it downward spiral of negative fan-backlash with another oddly colored stool left in stew on the middle of the floor.

Your ‘Warcraft 3: Reforged’ Custom Games All Belong To Blizzard Now

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the launch of Warcraft 3: Reforged has not been a very smooth one. Blizzard has not been the darling studio it once was, thanks in no small part to the recent Hong Kong controversy and, prior to that, its popularizing of loot boxes in modern AAA games.

While there are a number of things upsetting fans at the moment, the most controversial thing about Warcraft 3: Reforged is found in its acceptable use policy.

As PC Gamer pointed out Wednesday, the policy not only gives Blizzard ownership of any custom games made in the game’s editor allowing the company to delete them at will, it also gives Blizzard copyright over those games preventing them from being replicated elsewhere. In other words, if someone were to make Dota in Warcraft 3: Reforged, Blizzard would own the copyright for that custom game, preventing companies like Riot and Valve from creating their own profitable spinoffs.

On the one hand, you can hardly blame Blizzard for wanting to clamp down on that sort of thing. After all, Blizzard created Warcraft 3 and then Valve’s Dota 2 and Riot’s League of Legends went on to become huge successes based on the Warcraft 3 custom game. It doesn’t seem fair, does it?

The problem is that there really wasn’t anything preventing Blizzard from capitalizing on the original DotA (Defense of the Ancients)mod to begin with. If Blizzard had been smart, they would have hired the modders who created DotA to make a AAA sequel and reaped all those juicy profits. DotA had been around for years before Valve hired IceFrog to come create a sequel in the Source engine. At any point in time, Blizzard could have done the very same thing. They chose not to.

Clamping down on creativity in order to protect IP might seem like the smart thing to do for Blizzard, but it ultimately hurts everyone, Blizzard included. Just look at the MOBA market. Out of DotA sprung not only Dota 2, but also League of Legends and plenty others as well. You can’t copyright a game genre. If you could, Blizzard would be in dubious waters with Overwatch, a hero shooter clearly based off of Valve’s Team Fortress 2. Ideas and creativity should be free to share and adapt in a healthy market. It’s great that Blizzard has created tools for modders to use to create their own content, but the ideas that users come up with should not only benefit Blizzard.

If Blizzard had this policy back when Warcraft III originally launched, it’s entirely possible that the modding scene would never have flourished for that game. It’s possible that DotA itself might never have been made. If it had, it’s entirely likely that it would have remained a mod forever and that no sequel would have been created. This would have been a pretty major loss to the gaming community and industry. (I’m personally not a fan of this type of game but there’s no denying the important role these games have played over the past decade).

Blizzard should worry less about its modders creating new user-generated content that they can’t capitalize on, and more about their own dearth of new games. For one of the most valuable studios out there, Blizzard has put out staggeringly few new titles in recent years. Overwatch is years behind us now and Diablo IV is years away. Updates to Hearthstone and World of Warcraft are all fine and good, but the past is the past.

Because of nostalgia, i guess? EA used to make/publish awesome games too back then, before they became the greedy, money-hungry motherfuckers you know today. Same goes for Activision, Konami, etc...

They are just like the rest of the entertainment world re-hashing old shit rather than creating new. MOBAs have crushed the RTS world for ADD casual derps who cant handle building a base / resource management.

Let's just all agree that Blizzard is dead.

All of their competent developers are retired or left the company, and those who are left are completely subservient to shareholders. Every decision they are making is made with only money in mind. Their games are releasing well below polish expectations, they're getting really lazy with their ideas, their side-projects and utility services are ridiculously overpriced, and they've completely abandoned the idea of making solid game stories or interesting characters.

Trueeeee, and i say this as a fan of dota 2.. MOBAS wrecked the RTS scene. I miss base building... i miss the C&C3 and COH days

Dawn of War 2 sucked because it got rid of base building

Thankfully microsoft return to PC and making Age of empire 4 once again. they have now shown as they are more PC friendly than say blizzard who are releasing overwatch 2 a glorified DLC later this year.

Yep. I'm sure that was partly driving this decision. Although they could have been a bit more subtle maybe. They had to know this would blow up in their face. And now they've basically ensured the modding scene for this game is DOA. Hard to imagine they could be so out of touch - but then again no it isn't.

@ghosts4ever: Maybe they can finally update the 1998 visuals. I'd rather play Warhammer 40k (real-life) than these rts games.

@ghosts4ever: People love Blizzard because they have a 'when it's done' approach. Their games are polished to perfection and they never release a product to make an easy buck

Then diablo III happened

Overwatch happened

Warcraft III reforged happend

Oh yeah and their merger with the devil himself (Activision) happened

Tough for me to watch it happen.

First Bethesda, now Blizz.

Hey, it's a good thing the indie scene is alive and well. And MS gamepass is good. And Nintendo and Sony keep releasing amazing games. And we already have a replacement for Fallout and Diablo so, there's that.

Don't know who's next, but you can definitely put Ubisoft and Codemasters on that "fell from grace" list too.

I'm just glad Capcom (at least for now) are getting their shit back together...

Good move Bethesda. Those PC beggars definitely gonna do a petition to stop this, show them how strong ur stance are!

Also I really should reinstall reign of chaos and install demoncraft mod. Its a pretty cool mod I highly recommends it.

Seems like most on twitch already ditched the game entirely. It's terrible.

So yea, this game is dead.

Epic Games stopped making awesome games and are now just updating a BR game for children while paying developers with their Fortnite money to not put their games on Steam.

Yeah, i know, but i was talking only about companies that both develop (inhouse or outsourced, doesn't matter as long as it's their own IP) and publish their games. Epic, or better put, Tencent, became a (dirty) publisher as of recently. Epic didn't publish their own games back then, it was Atari, Midway, Microsoft, etc...

It's interesting seeing how heavily (and nefariously) they have attempted to monetize mods this gen.

I mean, it was never nothing new, id software was selling user-made maps way back and obviously Valve is well known for scouting talent, but here, it's different.

Bethesda in particularly, all it was, was essenailly seen as a way to generate endless microtransactions without having to bother making the content. Never went away either, they just moved it to a more ignorance console user-base and changed it service to something where users basically have no feedback of any kind.

Which, of course, dumbo Kotaku type journos fully support and prattle against, because they are 100% ze enemy.

Said in the lounge, be interesting to see just how far they try to go with the next Elder Scrolls, bet it makes Fallout 76 and their current workshop look positively good in comparison, gonna be a nuclear bomb of "gimmi money"

Can't really blame them for the MOBA thing. It was the DotA mod for Warcraft III that put the genre on the map. Yet it's Tencent (which owns Riot Games) and Valve (Dota 2) that are reaping the rewards. But of course, Blizzard doesn't own the MOBA genre, which dates all the way back to Herzog Zwei on the Sega Mega Drive.

Maybe they see they are becoming less and less useful because they are no longer strictly necessary to market and distribute a game.

And like big ISP companies they would sooner burn the industry to the ground, rather than compete legitimately.

I understand the business sense in this but at the same time I feel it is incredibly anti-consumer, and it goes against the spirit of gaming (fun and creativity, in other words).

A lot of great games have come from modifications and custom work on commercial games, and a lot of these great games have gone on to a.) make a lot of money, and b.) develop a lot of talent. Allowing people to mod your game is essentially a built-in recruitment tool and product incubator.

@ghosts4ever said:

EA releases games on PC, and Activision-Blizzard releases games on console. Not sure I understand your statement.
