Blu-Ray & HD DVD - what is the fuss???

Okay so many websites and fans are tracking the sales of both formats and claiming victory for every sales figure advantage each week but is it really that big a deal?

Ok I have seen both format and admit that both look sharp and great. However with the speed of the boradband getting faster surely downloads are going to be so much bigger than these new formats anyway?

The PS3 is supposed to be around for 10 years - I can't see BluRay or HDDVD suceeding when downloading a film/TV program will soon enough be so easy and cheap that it will be the norm.

No matter how cheap the HD DVD and Blu Ray ends up, the lack of overheads, packaging physical format and logistics will make them obsolete compared to downloads.

The PS3 has some great potential games coming up but at the moment it really is lacking. Buying it because of Blu Ray just seems like a bit of an empty reason - esepcially when Sony will also be offering downloads soon.

Surely the console war will be reduced to a comparison of games - things like Blu Ray and HD DVD is just a load of fuss over nothing!

Well, i dont understand why everyone loves blueray and Hd-dvd ! You seriously don't think the graphics are good enough at standard dvd's ? Then you have one of these problems :

1. A crappy tv

2.A crappy Dvd player

3. You are a graphic whore, and you will never be satisfied.

Downloading HD movies with HD sound (such as available on HD-DVD and Bluray) sounds like a great idea but for the masses it's simply not.  These movies with their audio can take anywhere from 20GB to a massive 60GB (two disc Pirates feature).  The time of downloading these films and the storage requirements will be huge.  A modest 30 movie collection will take nearly 600GB of storage.  That's quite a bit just for movies.  It's a nice niche market, but feasible for a mass distribution.ramey70

             You are correct sir - DL is the near future with loads of HDD space at economical prices - No B.R. or HD-DVD needed.;)

For us technology minded people it seems like an easy proposition. Upgrade our HDD, connect our computers to our TVs, and download movies over the internet. Run out of space, simply get another large HDD. Tranfser the movies over and start again. But you're going to have to convince older people in the 30+ range who aren't as technologically savy as we are to adopt that way of thinking. The idea of convincing people they need HDTV's and HD movies is hard enough, and then you want to go a major step forward and convince them that in order to watch these types of movies they will have to connect their computers to their TV's and download the movies from the internet will be a tall order. ramey70
