[QUOTE="gromit007"][QUOTE="SolidTy"] [QUOTE="gromit007"]I maight as well post this point again. The only reason BR is doing so well is the PS3. Not counting the sales of the PS3 the combined sales of HDDVD and Blu-Ray players is less than 200,000. It's format war that has not yet started. The movie biz needs more than games console owners to create a market. Beta and VHS fought it out for over 8 years, get used to having both for a while.SolidTy
You act as if that wasn't the plan from the get go by all industry insiders and Sony themselves. You act surprised. Get used to the fact we are all just pawns here.
PS3 sales are in the Millions, it looks real bad for HD-DVD now, as it is Very, Very obvious the only reason HD-DVD ever had the early lead besides the fact it came out first, was because Techies were WAITING for the PS3. Very Obvious. Again, this was ALL FORESEEN by Blu-Ray backers, and that's why the Hollywood Except Universal are all supporting Blu-Ray.
We try to play it down that the PS2 didn't help DVD's, but it did. And the movie industry knows it.
The main point I was trying to make is that its WAAAYY to early to make any predictions. None of the studios signed a BR exclusive contract, they may start producing HDDVD if they see fit.
Right now, HDDVD players are outselling BR players. The movies are being bought by the 18-30 that have a PS3. And overall the sales of both BR and HDDVD make up a VERY SMALL portion of the total DVDs sold. They will both be around a while.
Oh, it is true. It's too early to call, But your statement herejust isn't logical. Why would a consumer pay for a Blu-Ray player when the PS3 is sitting right there? We both know the answer, HDDVD hardcores always try to find silver lining somewhere, but that is FUD info.
Anyways, yes, it's too early to call, but when you count PS3 sales in the mix, HDDVD is getting smoked.
Do you think the HDDVD camp anticipated the PS3? I think they had an inkling it would be a problem. Its not as though HDDVDs have started selling less on a month to month basis. I'm sure its risen steadily, just not as much as Blu-Ray.
In the end, though, I honestly hope neither take off. I read an article a year ago or so that talked about Sony and Toshiba(? is that the creator of HDDVD) called off talks to create a unified format. This was mostly due to the fact that Sony had gone to far into develpment of Blu-Ray in secret and couldnt compromise enough. I think a more unified format should pop up later when HD is actually more prevalent in the general populace.
