I maight as well post this point again. The only reason BR is doing so well is the PS3. Not counting the sales of the PS3 the combined sales of HDDVD and Blu-Ray players is less than 200,000. It's format war that has not yet started. The movie biz needs more than games console owners to create a market. Beta and VHS fought it out for over 8 years, get used to having both for a while.

You act as if that wasn't the plan from the get go by all industry insiders and Sony themselves. You act surprised. Get used to the fact we are all just pawns here.

PS3 sales are in the Millions, it looks real bad for HD-DVD now, as it is Very, Very obvious the only reason HD-DVD ever had the early lead besides the fact it came out first, was because Techies were WAITING for the PS3. Very Obvious. Again, this was ALL FORESEEN by Blu-Ray backers, and that's why the Hollywood Except Universal are all supporting Blu-Ray.

We try to play it down that the PS2 didn't help DVD's, but it did. And the movie industry knows it.

I'm a little worried about this Walmart thing.  Hopefully Sony will do something to make it more viable for them to sell Blu-ray's.

Wal-Mart is a massive beast when it comes to retail stores. So if they not only aim to sell HD-DVD but to put a hard push into the sales well then Blu-Ray is in very big trouble. If this was Sears or even a JC Pennys then would be no biggie but Wal-mart is massive in the USA and they are opening stores worldwide also.

Now do yourself a favor and look at the European breakdown. Like it or not, this format war looks to go on for quite a while. I hope they both fail, and teach Toshiba and Sony both a lesson. They should have put aside silly quarrels and made an agreement on a unified HD disc, instead of being greedy and "fighting" over it.

Even if wal mart backs HDDVD I don't see HD making past year's end. With blu ray selling 2:1 when it first came out and now 7:2 by the time the wal mart plans come into action may already be too late.

Wal-Mart Names HD DVD the Winnersquirrel337

Check out the newest news, turns out it just a rumor, and a bad translated rumor at that....

The biggest news to hit the format war in some time hit last week with word that Wal-Mart and China's Great Wall corporation struck a deal to bring inexpensive HD DVD players to market. While this is would be great news for all HD fans, we were left a bit worrisome by the translation dispute between the two camps. Just to make sure we had our facts straight, we updated the post and contacted HD DVD to get the full story. While the HD DVD camp reminded us that they have inexpensive players from China on the way, they weren't able to confirm any "specific reports relating to Wal-Mart". It seems to us that if this were indeed true, that the HD DVD camp would be the first to trumpet its significance to their success in the format war. As much as we all want inexpensive next generation HD disc players, we will just have to wait for something more official before we hold off on our purchases waiting for Wal-Mart.

Good.  I was hoping blu-ray would pull ahead in the format war, because I bought a PS3 and I don't want to have to buy an HD DVD player.

You shouldnt be...it turns out that they are doubting the translation and that the chinese symbols for HD DVD might actual stand for Blu ray.  So far HD DVD camp has refused to confirm the 299 player.  Sounds alot like a rumor.  Here is an update from engadgetHD.com.

Update: Pull back the reigns HD DVD fanboys, Akihabara now says that they've made a "huge mistake" with their translation: the original source called it  HD DVD and the symbol might mean Blu-RAY." In other words, Blu-ray HD DVD. Huh? Word to the wise: since both formats use blue lasers, it's best to wait for an English press release before either camp celebrates

Finally, something good for Sony.  Yay Sony!  In a few years, they'll be like Nintendo: everyone's favorite underdog. Then Nintendo will be HATED.  Weird huh?

I wouldn't exactly put my faith in Rob, who is known as one of the biggest cheerleaders for HD-DVD.

Hmm. A massive amount of inexpensive playesr from China. A mass production model. Considering that full priced non-massed models have their faults, what the hell does that say about mass production models?

The main point I was trying to make is that its WAAAYY to early to make any predictions. None of the studios signed a BR exclusive contract, they may start producing HDDVD if they see fit.

Right now, HDDVD players are outselling BR players. The movies are being bought by the 18-30 that have a PS3. And overall the sales of both BR and HDDVD make up a VERY SMALL portion of the total DVDs sold. They will both be around a while.

?

The only reason why people are buying Blueray is because PS3 had it included. There's nothing interesting or amazing about this statement because it's only natural for those people that did spend their cash on PS3 use their technology.

The truth though, is that both Blue Ray and HD-DVD doesn't exhibit themselves as the winner visually.  Both look slightly the same. The only difference is capacity.

Oh, it is true. It's too early to call, But your statement herejust isn't logical. Why would a consumer pay for a Blu-Ray player when the PS3 is sitting right there? We both know the answer, HDDVD hardcores always try to find silver lining somewhere, but that is FUD info.

Anyways, yes, it's too early to call, but when you count PS3 sales in the mix, HDDVD is getting smoked.

Do you think the HDDVD camp anticipated the PS3? I think they had an inkling it would be a problem. Its not as though HDDVDs have started selling less on a month to month basis. I'm sure its risen steadily, just not as much as Blu-Ray.

In the end, though, I honestly hope neither take off. I read an article a year ago or so that talked about Sony and Toshiba(? is that the creator of HDDVD) called off talks to create a unified format. This was mostly due to the fact that Sony had gone to far into develpment of Blu-Ray in secret and couldnt compromise enough. I think a more unified format should pop up later when HD is actually more prevalent in the general populace.
