Because if you guys remember correctly for a while the PS2 was considered "a cheap DVD player" I think promoting the PS3 as a cheap Blu-Ray player is an excellence choice on Sony's part!

EDIT: From Wiki:

"The ability to play DVD movies was an added incentive for consumers to be able to justify purchasing the PS2"

Sound familiar?

HIs VHS comment was wrong, but he's right about HD Media sales being dismal compared to DVD.

Blu-ray probably won't catch-on until a few more years when players get down to $100.

The PS3 having Blu-ray will help no doubt but its not quite the same as the DVD helping the sales of the PS2. Why you ask? Because eveyone who had a regular TV could instanly take advantage of DVD. The same can't be said for Blu-ray as not everyone has a HDTV just yet.

I think bluray is a great selling feature. However, comparing it to the PS2 and DVDs is misleading. After all, when the PS2 launched, dvd images could play on more than 15% of televisions.

As long as people don't say bd = high in game definition than dvd9 I'm cool. But yes, I brought the ps3 because of bd too, despite the fact I haven't played a single bd on it yet.

I don't know anyone who has STOPPED using their VCRs. Not for renting or buying movies, but certainly for putting tv shows to tape.

Blu-ray will definitely help towards PS3's dominance but all these titles will help much more.

It's amazing how quick peoples view of Blu-ray has changed, I mean everyone was saying that it's gonna become the betamax of this gen but now Blu-ray will actually become the next format leader when HD goes standard.

Which will take how long?

The Blu-Ray player in my PS4 may end up being more useful and mainstream then the one in my PS3.

Try to keep up with the real world. You know, the one where only the old fart dinosaurs of the world haven't upgraded from VHS to DVD. Hell even my grandparents have DVD and have had it for many years now. Anybody that hasn't upgraded to DVD from VHS isn't a serious movie watcher anyways.

I went to buy a blu ray movie the other day and was surprised to find way more movies that I would like to buy in the HD DVD section. I'm not a big fan of Disney movies so I left without buying anything, IMO there is a better selection of HD DVD's.

No, not to me it wouldn't be. But it would have been better if they didn't launch at $600. If it would have launched at $400, it would be mopping the floor with the 360 by now, but it didn't, so not many units sold, so developers left, or made their PS3 exclusive into a multiplat. Trust me, if the PS3 had launched at $400, it would have plenty of games for it now (including plenty of exclusives). The system has hardly any games because not many people was buying PS3s, so the developers when where the most money could be made, which is to multiplat, or just make it for 360.

Who said anything about VHS evaporating in the 90s? If I saw that, guess what. I would have called them a lier and not even asked for a link. I see VHS in stores, so I know there is still a market for it (however small it is these days). And That brings be back to telling youto now not only provide a link, but stop trying to dodge my request for a link by trying to put the focus on something else. So please provide that link. ;)

The reason it takes so long for a new movie format to pass the last is because the new format doesn't start with all the movies the last one had, so unless the new format is backwards-compatible, you're gonna have to keep the old format to watch some of the movies until they come out on the new format.

Yes, but the main reason it took so long for DVDs to outsell VHS' was because the DVD isn't BC with the VHS.

Until you provide a link, I call BS.cosmostein77

I would say the burden of proof is on someone saying that VCRs apparently evaporated in the 90s, which started all of this. Didn't see you crying link then.

Who said anything about VHS evaporating in the 90s? If I saw that, guess what. I would have called them a lier and not even asked for a link. I see VHS in stores, so I know there is still a market for it (however small it is these days). And That brings be back to telling to to now not only provide a link, but stop trying to dodge my requeat for a link by trying to put the focus on something else. SO please provide that link. ;)

Page two, bottom of the page there skippy,

I provided two, as well as the chart from Nielsens, there are about 200 more if you would other links?

Nope, that works. But I am serious when I say I don't know anybody using VHS. They may have one in their bedroom or something, but not in the livingroom. I totally missed that post of your until you directed me back to it. I like to ask for links here alot because ALOT of fanboys (not calling you one) like to pull crap out their ass and try to pass it off as fact.

[QUOTE="l-_-l"][QUOTE="CJL13"]The reason it takes so long for a new movie format to pass the last is because the new format doesn't start with all the movies the last one had, so unless the new format is backwards-compatible, you're gonna have to keep the old format to watch some of the movies until they come out on the new format.CJL13

I don't know yet because I don't have a PS3, but doesn't Blu-Ray also play DVD?

Yes, but the main reason it took so long for DVDs to outsell VHS' was because the DVD isn't BC with the VHS.

Yes, I know. I didn't buy DVD for along time and used VHS because of that very reason.

Its an interesting arguement but I don't think that is really the case,

Why did I buy both HD Players? Because I had an HD-TV that I wanted to take advantage of,

WIth less then 10% of North American homes having HD-DVD as of the end of 2007, and less then 1% of homes having a 1080p TV in their homes its not just really a matter of getting an HD format player, but having the hardware to display it.

Blu-Ray's victory is slowed by the speed in which the consumer adopts HD-TVs
