i was thinking, if it wasn't for the bluray player, Sony could have relased the PS3 before the compition at a cheaper price, they should have more so for the fact that PS2 was older than the original xbox, cube. But due to the bluray components not being ready, delays were made and what not. If anything the PS3 should have been out first, but Sony decided to get it bloated with a lot of high tech stuff. (perhaps MS, introducing the harddrive and extra's with the xbox 1, sony wanted to one up them and forgot whats important)

by now, Sony would have dominated the console race, had more games.

why i say that is, with the hardware the PS3 has, it just seemed kinda late, and pointless..for the simple fact that the 360's hardware is just as good if not better due to its simplier design (GPU strengths) Many developers have said that what ever game the other system comes out with, no matter how technical, the other console could still do it, both hardware are about equal, and in which this case, makes the 360 the prefered choice for your gaming needs.

Bluray also hasn't benifited games enough to care. IMO, bluray would have made much more sense on the PS4. by then it would have been more standard and cheaper, etc.

Sony's a great company, but maybe they should focus on the more important things, rather than care about the competition so much and trying to outdo them. (even though, they keep bragging they don't, they do)

anyone agree?

The PS3 wasn't due out until 2007, because of the 360 Sony bring it out early......look it up.

So now you knocking Sony for putting high tech stuff into the PS3, whats wrong with that, it might not be "needed", but people still want it.

No, you provide links, because that is flat out wrong. Sony was targeting 2005 for a few years leading up to the PS3 release, and both cell and bluray were supposed to be ready by then. Sony delayed to 2006, they didn't "move up" to 2006. Find one single thing to support your ascertation that they weren't going to launch until 07.

Actually the PS3 DID launch in 2007.

(In some territories that is)

2006 in the U.S.

And if it wasn't for the Playstation, the Blu-ray player would not have won the format war. Why would anyone hate on the fact that your getting a Blu-ray player with the console, it's great, you're getting way more bang for your buck then with a 360

Any reasonable person would say blu-ray saved the PS3.

this thread is pathetic.

lesner87

Considering how much $ Sony loses on each console I can see the argument. And seeing how PS3 is in last place this gen, how did Blu-ray 'save' the PS3?

Most of the people buy the PS3 because of Blu ray.

Doesn't say much for Blu-Ray then since sales aren't all that great.

I do think that Blu-Ray is fantastic, but I'm not too sure about your argument that most people buy PS3 because of Blu-Ray. I think that most people buy the PS3 because of Sony's success in previous generations. The Blu-Ray player added more perceived value.

I do like TC's arguments though. It is very possible that PS3 would be in a much better position if it didn't use Blu-Ray.

PS3 would have launched in 2006 with or without Blu-ray. Sony consoles always launch 6 years apart, am I the only one that notices this? -_-

Not having Blu-ray would probably just make it cheaper in which case it would probably be ahead of 360 by now.

It dosn't even seem to be that great of the Blu-ray player. 2 of my Blu-ray movies won't play on it but they will play on a stan-alone player. Whats up with that?

I think putting a Blu ray player with the PS3 was a great idea. Yes, it made it more expensive, but contrary to most people's beliefs, some gamers out there ACTUALLY LIKE having a console that is versatile and full of multiple features.

There are only two reasons why I bought a PS3. I love video games and I love to watch movies. For me, that justified spending the extra money to get a console that could do both. Not only can I watch my DVD movies (upscaled) now I can watch HD movies on Blu ray AND i can play some awesome video games.

As for the expensive prices of blu ray movies, Amazon and other websites often sell a variety of blu ray titles for pretty cheap. Also, have people forgotten about rental services like Netflix? I dont really buy movies anymore, I "netflix" them, especially the blu ray titles i want to see. $10/month for all the DVD and blu ray movies I wanna watch. So much for the "blu ray movies are too expensive" argument.

You do realize that Sony stands to make more money off of BluRay royalties than PS3 ever will. Sony is in the business of making $$$, and BluRay = $$$. So what if PS3 suffers, winning the next generation optical medium was always the main objective.

On a side note. Sony also's happens to be one of the biggest movie studios and distributors in the film industry. Losing the HD war to HD DVD was not an option, as it would have forced Sony to pay out a licensing royalty on every film they will ever release in the next decade.

What a lot of gamers diden't realize is that PS3 was created not only to win the gaming format but more importantly to help Sony win the HD optical format. PS3 was created to be used a trojan horse for Bluray.

Stop just thinking about games and think Business, cause thats how the ral world works.

No, if it wasn't for Blu-Ray, PS3 would be far further back than without. When consumers want to buy a Blu Ray player, and see that the PS3 is a cheaper Blu Ray player WITH gaming capabilites, they jump onto it - even if they have no intention of playing games at all. Hell, I'm a committed PC user and even I've put it into my head a couple of times.

There is no way Blu-Ray is killing the PS3 - it's helping it in many more ways than you can think.

actually cheaper blu-ray players are available right now .

the movie watcher will likely pick up one of those instead of a PS3.

Ah really? I haven't seen one yet, but I think there would still be large proportion of people who own a PS3 to watch Blu Ray movies.
