I just found this and thought i would share with everyone and to see what you guys think. Sorry Mods if this is in the wrong place but i debated for like an hour about where to post it lol, but since it affects both consoles possibly, i posted here. It states that sales of blu-ray are tanking, suggesting the demise of the format. Im sure you guys are just as confused as i am about this.

PS, i own all systems so im no fanboy!!!!

The Inquirer is not a reputable source. Give me something a little more credible and then we can discuss it.

Maybe you shouldn't believe everything you read, or at least consider the source. *sees link & walks away*

And considering that HDDVD is truly "dead", Blu-Ray is the only Hi-Def format out there right now, how could it be "tanking"? Man, you need to get your +10 shield of n00b flaming out, cause you're about to get pillaged!

The CNET article just talks about how Blu ray STANDALONE players have gone down in sales since January, which is understandable seeing as how its after the holiday season and PS3s are still the desired blu ray player. And if you look at actual blu ray disk sales they have gone up by 351%.

The not so bright people out there had expected sales to skyrocket once the format war was done, but it didn't. They thought was people would ignore the massive defects of Blu-ray and buy like the dumb sheep that they are, handcuffing themselves to the Sony bank account.

Surprise, it didn't happen. US consumers are still dumb sheep, but this time they are realizing what is being done to them and they aren't biting. Sony's hope of having 50% of disc sales this year be Blu-ray are more likely to happen because of falling DVD sales than rocketing Blu-ray.

The format has three problems, DRM infections, BD-J and greed. The greed part is obvious, Sony won the format war and are trying to charge people between 50 and 100% more for a product with marginally better quality. Sure, it looks better, and the 0.07% of people with 7.1 channel audio setups will be overjoyed, but for the rest, it is a small step at best over an upconverting DVD.

Are you going to buy the DVD version for $16.99 on new release sale or $29.99 for the BD? It doesn't take a genius to realize that the next iteration of Hollywood Formula #7 with Big Stars #3 and #8 isn't worth it. The movie studios have yet to convince me that The Water Horse is worth spending my money on at all, much less at twice the price for DRM'd HD versions.

An excerpt from the article. Seems like some of the Bluray arguments I've posted. This guy seems to know what he's talking about..

Not at all look above you and you will see a link in the same month that shows blu ray sales have gone up by alot. He is crying about stand alone blu ray players, excluding PS3 just like Toshiba and we saw how effective that logic was for HD DVD didnt we.

The bandwidth of TV service hasn't reached a point of delivering 100% HD quality. And the internet service is has less than this. And in many countries there is a limit of bandwidth that can be used for internet service. HD DD is a long way from being a viable way of getting HD movies.

First lemmings say HD-DVD, because it was cheaper, will make Blu-Ray the next beta max.

Now lemmings say Blu-Ray won't do well because of DVD and HD DLC.

Not really most hard drives in the world are no where near even 100gbs. plus most people don't use pc for movies. a blu ray movie can be 50gbs it would take ages to download that. most people dont even have the net. there is only 660million pcs. most of them are very out of date. try downloading 50gbs @ 128kbps

I wonder if you actually believe this. Then again, you probably believe that Bluray is a Sony product. And who in their right mind would pay $29 for a Bluray movie when most can be had far cheaper than that?

I don't care if Blu-ray Tanks....the whole HD thing is just stupid. The difference between HD movies on a HD-TV and normal DVDs on a Normal TV is basically nothing...Ateast to me. Its just a fad and is nothing but hype... It offers no REAL benefits over DVDs and can sometimes cost more.

the reason why blu ray has not taken off like dvd did. Is becuase dvd was made for 480i tvs every one has an SD tv . Blu ray is made for big expensive full HD tvs with 7,1 sound. very few people have this so they don't see a big advantage with blu ray. plus the 400$ + players and the 30$ and more movies really hurts your wallet .

Actually, what his opinion seems to be the popular one at the moment. BluRay is definitely the format of the (near) future...but this isn't DVD vs VHS. There was actually an interesting article in IEEE Spectrum (look up IEEE if you don't know what it is, and university-goers will probably have access to the magazine) a few months back saying that BluRay is a hollow victory. I'm happy that a single format won, and I'm happy it was BluRay...but I'm not running out to throw $$$ at high def just because companies want me to.

Yeah you are right, I 1st experienced Bluray watching a Sony Pictures release, on A Sony Bravia, played on a PS3. I guess I must of been a bit shortsighted to presume that you can't get the complete BD experience on Sony products...

Actually it doesn't. Bluray and HD aren't one in the same. Sales of HD sets are skyrocketing, especially flat panels. Networks and satellite providers are scrambling to add more and more HD programming and content to satisfy demand. On a personal basis, I just purchased a 1080i HD camera for $3,700 to give my customers a choice for HD content. The response has been overwhelming. I can post pics of the cam if you don't believe me. HD is real, and it's here to stay. People see the difference.

[QUOTE="KillaHalo2o9"]Downloading HD movies from the Internet is the way.jimm895

The bandwidth of TV service hasn't reached a point of delivering 100% HD quality. And the internet service is has less than this. And in many countries there is a limit of bandwidth that can be used for internet service. HD DD is a long way from being a viable way of getting HD movies.

Who says it has to? If picture quality was THE deciding factor for your average consumer, most people would still be buying film cameras. Instead they're buying digital cameras, despite the fact that these cannot reproduce the same resolution and dynamic range. They're also getting their music off of CDs and download, despite the fact that other technologies like DVD music offer superior audio.

My point is that most people are willing to forgo a certain level of quality in favor of greater convenience, and often lesser cost.

Good Post. Blu Ray prices are Killing IT!! I have a combo hd/blu drive and on principle refuse to buy a Brand New Blu-ray disk. I catch them used or I don't catch them. After Hd-Dvd, They tried to creep the price up. So in theory I'm glad people are'nt buying overpriced Movies.

the fact that this moron talking in this link says that Bluray only looks marginally better than DVD already reduces the credibility for this source. Have people seen how good high def looks? I find it hilarious when cheap people just settle with dvd but then they bash High def for being expensive and not looking much better. Stop being bitter! High Def movies are amazing in picture quality.

I wouldn't be suprised at all. I mean look at UMD for movies, it's resting in peace now. Blu ray is still more expensive than any movie format out there. So until blu ray prices miraculously drop down drastically, it'll continue to tank lower and lower until it becomes like UMD for movies, irrelevant.

If it is - maybe the Blu-Ray disk will go down in price like 50%, because prices for those disks are just way too high.

Aren't those links just for standalone players... didn't the other link provided by a poster says that blu-ray software sells were up 351%?

I have a relative involved in Disney entertainment, and he claims that dvd is still outselling Blu-Ray by such a wide margin, they are holding off releasing the old classics until it picks up alot more support.

Of the 6 or 7 households I frequent with HD sets, I am still the only one that has a Blu-Ray player, despite my continual praising of the format.
