So after all it seems that the Blu-Ray capabilities of the PS3 are the main driving force behind its sales, not its exclusive games or "teh powah of teh cell". :P

1) This is rather old now.
2) It's not the "top reason," it's the most commonly cited top-five motive.
surely they didnt include me & my friends in their studies cause we all got our PS3's for gaming...I always find these articles stupid considering most of the time study is based on a couple of hundreds / thousands people, when currently there are 35 million PS3 owners..

Yeah I was going to say this, and it makes sense. Blu Ray is a big part of the PS3 if it is not in the top five there must be some truely amazing other things going on.isn't it only a 3% difference for the people who buy it for movies and the people who buy it for games?
Practically the same percentage of people buy it for movies as the people who buy it for games. Clearly there's some overlap here.
Makes sense to me.GeneralShowzerditto, a processor is not a selling point and the ps3, IMO, has the worst collection of exclusives... well i think it beats the virtualboy so its not quite the worst

In my own case is true; I bough my last PS3 game in November 2009 and still need to finish Uncharted 2, MGS 4 and Resistance 1.
If one is going to count 360/PC games as valid exclusives, can PS3 claim dibs on exclusive movies because the 360 can't play Blu-Rays? Oh snap!....-_-JynxzorThat kind of deFEETs the logic here of what qualifies as exclusive. You can play Blu-ray on other Blu-ray players. Thereforefoot, Blu-ray isn't exclusive to the PS3.
Not shocking. Main reason why it sold when launched. It was the cheapest bluray player.
Didn't sony advertise it as bluray player with small print reading "Also plays games"?
Nohtnym
wouldn't be suprised if they did. the games sucked at launch
The Ps3 was conceived to prevent that from happeningImagine the damage if blu-ray lost the format wars...:o
RavenLoud
and this is a game console dammit...or is it?:omitu123
No, in actuality...
it's teh supacomputa that cures cancar!!1 :P
I guess alot of you must have missed where PS3's software outsold XBOX 360's software for the 2009 fiscal year.
The PlayStation 3 enjoyed 115.6 million software sales in the Sony's 2009-fiscal year (runs from May 1st 2009 to April 30th 2010), up from 2008's 103.7 million units. Surprisingly, despite a lower hardware installed base, this performance was better than that of the Xbox 360, which achieved 103.1 million software sales.
i didnt buy the ps3 just for blu ray but it did make the purchase decision a lot easier. i looooove blu ray. planet earth is probably the most beautiful thing in existence. i just borrowed avatar from a friend, i though the movie was complete trash but the visuals are amazing
I bought my PS3 for MGS4, and didn't care about Blu-ray at the time.
I was disappointed in MGS4, but now I have over 50 movies on Blu-ray.

Clearly, if maybe the 10 people you know don't fit in with the majority, then there is no way the study is correct. Do you understand how it works when there are 35 million other PS3 owners? The people frequenting this forum PROBABLY BOUGHT IT FOR THE GAMES. Are the people here every PS3 user? NO. So the fact that YOU are not the average does not mean the average is wrong. "They clearly didn't include me or my friends". Just THINK for a second on how a study works.
Exactly its not exactly accurate in anyway shape or form. Not only that i belive they were asking people why they would buy the console. If they do not already own one then i guess they are not that interested in gaming are they.surely they didnt include me & my friends in their studies cause we all got our PS3's for gaming...I always find these articles stupid considering most of the time study is based on a couple of hundreds / thousands people, when currently there are 35 million PS3 owners..

Blu Ray is a big part of the PS3 if it is not in the top five there must be some truely amazing other things going on.Can't blame the fanboys for not understanding the survey results though, the GS article presents the results as 'Blu ray is the #1 reason people buy PS3'. In reality, all it said was that a majority of people cited it as one of their 5 reasons. For all we know, they all cited it as their number 5 reason, with library, exclusives, psn, etc being more important.1) This is rather old now.
2) It's not the "top reason," it's the most commonly cited top-five motive.
wooooode
i wonder if most people bought the PS2 back in its early days mainly because it was a cheap DVD palyer? I think so.
Are you THAT poor? No offense, but it's safe to say thatmain reason why i own mine
got it in 2008....so far i only own 2 games, stranglehold (has Hardboiled the movie on the disk) and Dark Sector (got it for $7, its fun for a little while)
ogvampire
Come on, get some games on that thing.
OT: It wasn't the main reason why I bought mine, but it was the main factor that justified it's price for me. (bought a 399$ non-BC fat)
This is news how.....
Anyways, this isn't that shocking. Like how most people only buy Wiis for the controller and some of the games. Or how most people bought a 360 only for the online play or PS2s for the DVD player. This really isn't that shocking.
