@Xplode_games: No it's not confirmed at all. HBM bandwidth starts at 512 GB/s, Scorpio only has 320 GB/s of bandwidth as stated by Microsoft so HBM is pretty much ruled out.
It will have a 384 bit bus and use GDDR5
@Xplode_games: They never said anything ever about it having HBM as RAM. HBM would just drive up the cost of the console by alot, much more expensive then GDDR5 at the moment.
It will use a 384 bit bus of GDDR5..
256 bit GDDR5 even superclocked can't give 320 GB/s figure so
"More RAM = More Performance" is such a misconception among some console gamers and entry-level PC system builders. Having "enough" RAM is enough, and if that RAM is also faster, then that's what allows better performance.
A few years back, 4GB RAM was deemed as all that's necessary for gaming even on a high-end PC. Nowadays 6-8GB RAM is probably the sweet spot. Any additional RAM beyond this point would generally serve non-gaming purposes or act as pure vanity. People who threw 32GB RAM into their PC just because "big looks good" are literally wasting money.
Performance-wise, it's not going to make a difference whether Scorpio comes with 8GB or 128GB of GDDR5 RAM. Console games are not demanding enough in the first place to require so much RAM. What would make a performance contribution is if Scorpio packs 8 (or even 6) GB of HBM2 RAM instead of GDDR5 RAM. However, due to the ignorance of general public, from a marketing perspective even 12GB of GDDR5 RAM will generate a better perception of than 6GB of vastly superior HBM2 RAM.
I would say 12gb of ram is the minimum in the sense of usage for the absolutely most demanding games.. There are a few games on the pc that at very high settings will eat close to 8gb of ram (GTA5 comes to mind), that extra 4gb of ram will ensure you do not run out of resources with backround programs. Furthermore ram speed, in less you are using a apu, means absolutely jack for any actual noticeable performance increase. I also doubt the Scorpio will have 6gb HBM2.. Think it would be more realistic to say it will have maybe 4gb of hbm2 or maybe 6gb of gddr5.. Not sure why any one is getting the perspective of 12gb.. Not even 1080s, cards that either cost as much or are more expensive than the entire scorpio system, only have 8gb..
People have to take in account of the cost these machines in mind, and people are putting absurdly high specs for something that will be entry range in cost for pc..

You may be right about this.

The OG PS4 has 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM.

That's total ram, I am talking more along the lines of DEDICATED to the video card. I highly doubt we are going to see HBM being used as system memory.

The PS4 uses 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM for everything.
