My god this looks ugly. Am I back in the ps2 era of games?

Kotaku says this looks pretty

Looks more like the 2008 prince of persia if anything. Not bashing the game, but what PS2 game looks like that?

I hope it's more Crackdown and less X-Blades (just trying to be different).

I fail to see how these three things (PDZ and Borderlands, plus the comparison between art direction of PS2 games and current-gen games) are related.

Everything is low-res. And low polygonal. The textures are all out of place. It just looks cluttered.

exactly looks decent, and will probably look better than prince of persia being made for pc. This is just for pc, right?

You wish PS2 games looked like that. I like it. I'm glad developers are starting to concentrate more on art style, it's a good thing.

Jak 3 looks like that, and looks better. I dunno why this picture is so fugly to me. It iis the terrible low-res ground, the zero bump-mapping etc.

I don't think Jak 3 was cel-shaded. It seems like you're talking about the relation of art-direction, in that case this game also has a similar theme to RAGE from id software.

I approve. Looks a lot more appealing than old Borderlands. More like Dullblandlands!!!! The only thing I don't like is how they turned guy on the right from kilt wearing Mad Max guy to skinny JSRF dude.

Just out of curiosity, why would you expect a cell shaded art style use bump mapping? Cell shaded art is generally aiming for a cartoonish look while bump mapping is for tryingto obtain a more realistic look.

Perfect Dark Zero had cell-shading elements (I think the main character is cell-shaded) with amazing bump mapping. This game really has low-res 'realistic' textures. The rocks at the end look ugly. The enviroment is actually hard to look at. Either go all cell-shaded, or none at all.

Good that they're doing something different, but I can't say I appreciate the whole raver/cyberpunk aesthetic.

Doesn't look ugly.Reminds me a lot of Crackdown (and I loved it's comic book art style). I'll hold judgement until I see more.

That's what i would like to know. I guess pretty soon we wont have anymore "cel-shaded" games, we'll have " Concept Art Sty1e" games and "Illustrative art sty1e games" or whatever other name some silly developer comes up with.

I was not so sure about this when the news first broke the other day with just a glimpse of this same shot. The more I looked at it and now with this full screen, it only made me more excited for the game. As this an rpg/shooter hybrid, therefore, it needs to distinguish itself from how everyday shooters look. I think this artstyle makes it stand out quite nicely and I'm really looking forward to how the game overall shapes up. Should be interesting.

It looks a lot like Prince Of Persia if anything, and that's one of the best looking games this gen. I'd prefer it if more devs used similar art styles.

I personally like the new art style compared to the old art style, this one atleast has some soul to it, borderlands before looked nice but very generic (very very generic, two worlds almost beat it).

You think it looks ulgy but have you even seen the old style and how generic it looked?

This games got more going for it then fallout 3 and farcry 2, considering how well those games sold without full co-op support I'd say gearbox has this in the bag if they pull it off successfully, just the rpg elements alone will hook in many people but then throw in real time fps gameplay, customization up the wazoo and you've got a game should crush the last two open-world fps/rpgs.

I could flop but i'd rather give it the benefit of the doubt at this point, the gameplay from the old art style was actually very good.

Also when you consider that outside the main pathways between main centres (cities, towns, etc) and the main centres themselves is completely randomized giving the players very high replayability you really have to give it credit for the scope.

I mean come on, mad-max + diablo elements + open-world + customization = dream game :D
