I saw the trailer when I watched Deadpool and Wolverine and this looks super bad. Horribly miscast too.
The curse of bad video game to movie adaptations is back, boys.
It's a Randy Pitchford ego-stroking project. You could tell every time he posts those cringe-worthy BTS videos. I used to be a Borderlands fan, so I knew it was never movie material; its sense of humour had to be taken in small doses, not concentrated into a 90-100 minute sprint, otherwise it wears you down.
It had zero possibility of ever being good. That's why I paid no attention to it.

Part of me wishes it was smaller. Something like a netfix or amazon cartoon series like Cyberpunk Edgerunners. It would fit the comic book art style of the game more too.

Yup. Tales from the Borderlands already proved a mini-series like that would have been a better format. More measured pacing, more world building. Could have been like a more light-hearted version of the Fallout Amazon show.
But noooo. Randy Pitchford must have his toy.
As i've said many times, i enjoyed B1 and B2 a good amount back in the day, but that's primarily because we didn't have many coop based loot shooters. B3 showed us that there's no talent at Gearbox, and they're incapable of evolving the IP for what its supposed to be. Of course the movie sux.

I think Borderlands movie should have been more like Arcane: League of Legends since Netflix did a nice job of it and this is coming from someone who actually likes League of Legends.
I love Borderlands and Tales of the Borderlands. Not a huge fan of the franchise though the casting definitely feels like a slap in the face to fans.
Eli Roth needs to take a break and just focus on Thanksgiving 2 because at least he put his soul and heart into the first flick. He sure wasn't cooking right with Borderlands movie at all! Taking M-rated games and making PG with a 13 fails every single time, Completely ignores your built-in audience and fanbase.
Borderlands movie cost something like 100-120 million dollars and needs to make around 200 million to break even. Other people like movie theaters also get a cut of profits. This movie going to lose a lot of money!
The thing that baffles me about this and World Of Warcraft, both of these games strongest selling points is the strong cartoon aesthetics (even though Borderlands is actually shit), yet instead of that, you got shit live action cosplay.
And it's not like animations don't make money.

Dude probably saw The Last Of Us series and was like "I can do that" and, well...here we are.
Pitchford can take a long walk off a short pier, dude is a hack bordering on grifter at this point.
Also I know I'm being petty, but Borderlands is one of the most overrated video game series of all time.

I think (this is just my personal theory) there is still some of the "old guard" in film production that believes animation can't be taken seriously, and if you want to maximize the exposure/profit, you have to make it live action.
The irony here is I'd actually be pretty interested in an animated film or series of Borderlands. Tales from the Borderlands (the Telltale game) is actually the best Borderlands game out there, and proves the franchise has the legs for a good story or at least the atmosphere for good story-telling.
Ditto to the World of Warcraft movie; terrible movie. And yet their animated (both CG and drawn) stuff for their games is amazing.
Saurfangs Mak'Gora was cool as hell.
@shadowsentiel: @ermacness: You guys need to re-read OP as no one said Borderlands is a bad game. "bad video game to movie adaptations" only!
Oh haha lol. Thanks for the note.
Ya, it a bad movie.
Look at what Nintendo Life said, for reference.

Wish it was a better movie honestly.
Borderlands film flops with $8.8 million domestic opening weekend.

Its production budget is $115 million w/ $30 million marketing/distribution costs. Nearly 60% of productions costs were covered by international presales.https://t.co/Zdx8ES4cbYpic.twitter.com/hM7pHxqXFg
I saw the trailer when I went and saw Deadpool and Wolverine and was immediately expecting it to be forgettable. I'll still try and watch it when it comes to streaming for curiosity sakes, as movie critics don't always hit the mark.
I mean. Sonic 3 is this year, so don't count out VG movies, yet.
Don't forget about the live-action Zelda movie. I got a good feeling that Sony is going to take this one seriously.
That's Legend. Made ages ago.
Tom Cruise looks like a prick.
@davillain: It's not entirely his fault. Avi Arad, the film's producer decided during production that the film needs to be PG-13 to get a larger audience. This was already after multiple R rated scenes were filmed. Between that and co-writer Craig Mazin (writer/showrunner for The Last of Us) telling producers to remove his name from the project, as it doesn't resemble what he wrote.
Between sitting on a shelf for almost two years, reshoots with a different director (Roth had already left to film Thanksgiving), and very little spent on promotion, the studio knew that the movie would suck, but was probably obligated to give it a theatrical release.
@davillain: Thanksgiving was fun to watch. Some people are laying all the blame on him, but this isn't all his fault. Avi Arad has produced way too many mediocre to bad big-budget films to not get blame--deciding to go PG-13 during post-production didn't do this film any favors.
At least you'll save a few buck by streaming it, but honestly, it's kinds dull and anticlimactic. At least it's short.
Borderlands is coming to digital platforms on August 30th.https://t.co/IXmdu1H3CDpic.twitter.com/3IUw35p2ZZ

Wow
Wow
Given we yet to have this announcement for cinema snobs favoriteboogeyman (particularly after statements from a director with known pedigree and an edgy comedian on HBO in response to Stan Lee's death), this is saying something...
I always find it funny when "gamers" talk about movies. As "gamers" you're used to the bottom of the barrel story telling and the like, let's not act like you have high standards when it comes to movies about video games 🤣
You assume that gamers have low-brow tastes in entertainment typical of low-income people?
