Radical Heights, Lawbreakers studio Boss Key Productions shuts down

Boss Key is done. Founder Cliff Bleszinski posted a statement to Twitter to confirm that the studio is shutting down, and he is going to take time off from the industry.

That’s very sad to hear. I like Cliff and the Gears of War franchise is a huge favourite of mine. I would love to see him join up with The Coalition and work on the Gears of War games again. Anyway I wish him the best in whatever he does next.

I don't wish bad on him. I do think he is far more tightly wound than is particularly healthy.

Cliffy B will be fine, he cashed in big time with his Oculus shares. But I feel for the team. Neither Lawbreakers or Radical Heights were bad, other games were just better.

Well, now we know how Radical Heights turned out. Damn shame. It's not like lawbreakers was a bad game. Decent launch price, focused on hardcore MP gameplay, no pay to win Microtransactions.

Sometimes you can do everything right and still fail.

(Of course, the character design was unappealing but I've seen worse in other popular games.)

Doesn't surprise me. The games they were making were not very appealing.

I looked up player numbers for Radical Heights X-treme early access release the other day.

They weren't good.

Sooooo in summary Cliff Bleszinski left Epic to work on:

  • An arena shooter that flopped
  • A PUBG clone that flopped

How very un-Epic of him indeed.

He and David Jaffee have the same curse, one great game, tons of crap afterwards.

Sucks when people lose their jobs... another example of out cut throat this industry can be. One bad decision can sink a whole company.

He's a flip flopping douche, but losing your job kinda sucks. And I love Gears of War.

Kind of sad....they shouldn't have tried to copy games that were already popular

To be fair, the amount of time it takes to make a game like lawbreakers, they started it way before overwatch was announced or popular. Sometimes two people come up with similar ideas, it happens. And Fortnite made a fortune straight up stealing PUBG's formula so....you can indeed come out on top copying other games. Lawbreakers just got the other end of the stick.

Yeah it's strange how he flipped off both PC gamers and Xbox gamers with different games ...

I really love GeoW as well, it's one of the best, nay THE BEST co-op experience of the entire last gen.

Which is why I thought it sucked all the more that Epic and Cliffy lost interest in producing singleplayer games :(

Sometimes three companies come up with the same idea.

Why does everyone keep forgetting Battleborn ?

I think Fortnite and Radical Heights are two ends of the same stick.

Fortnite came at the right time, and for the right price. It just rode on the success of the Battle Royale Hype Train.

Not every Battle Royale game/clone/wannabe is going to do so well.

@Bread_or_Decide: Jaffee had two big hits, Twisted Metal and God of War.

Im not sad to hear this at all. May it be a sign to other developers not to make cash in games of what ever is popular and try offering something a little unique. They were out to milk people with the more of the popular craze and im glad to see that this time at least, it didnt work.

As I said in the actual article, its unfortunate news. Lawbreakers was an enjoyable game that could never maintain a player base. As for RH, the article clearly stated it was a last ditch effort. I don't care for PUBG or Fortnite, so I wasn't going to check out RH. Hopefully their crew can all find new jobs.

Sucks for him and those working with him. But as a consumer can't say I'm sorry for him. Left his former job just to go after gaming trends hoping to make easy money. Mnhé.
