Eurogamer: There's a similarity between the Respawn Entertainment guys deal with EA and your one with Activision. You both own the IP, you both remain independent. Is that something you think we'll see more of?

Brian Jarrard: We talked about that a lot with the Activision folks, and I get the impression you're not going to see a lot more of that, because to hear them talk about it - and I think it's better to look at their perspective because I have a pretty insular view of these things - but there aren't that many developers out there that can demand and get that kind of deal. I think you can count them on one hand.

So we're really fortunate to be in that kind of position in that we have the ability to embark on our own path and control our own destiny, and as far as if there's going to be a big change, I don't think there is, because I don't think there's enough developers out there that have the track record to attract a deal like this.

Eurogamer: The terms of the deal aren't being discussed but you've said it's a 10-year deal on this one franchise. Could the deal expand beyond that to encompass working on other stuff for Activision beyond this IP?

Brian Jarrard: It's certainly possible but it's not something that's specifically identified right now. That would be an incremental, secondary discussion that might come at a later date, but we have such grandiose plans for our next big chapter that it's going to take all of our best and brightest minds to work on it, so it's not going to be a scenario where we suddenly have three different teams working on three different projects.

Eurogamer: Yeah, so it'll be a while before we see Bungie's take on Guitar Hero.

Brian Jarrard: Yeah, I would say probably never? [Laughs.]

Also confirms Bungies next IP is multiplatform. I'm not sure I will even buy Reach now, I refused to support Activision & now one of my favourite developers has joined them. First Blizzard, now Bungie.. I truly, truly hate Activision.

I just don't understand. Didn't Bungie leave MS to be more independent? Why did they sign a 10 year contract with one of the worst publishers in the industry?

Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Press Release

So this means that:

• Bungie is not owned by Activision, as Infinity Ward is.
• Bungie owns this new IP that Activision will publish. This will make it harder for Activision to screw with that IP.
• Bungie's deal only extends to the unnamed new IP. They can publish other sorts of games with any publisher.

Still, I'm rather shocked. This sort of deal seemed to be something that only EA did. Given all the Infinity Ward drama going on, you'd think that other FPS developers would steer away from Activision.

Activision is just going topublish their games. All the rights of the future games and franchises will still belong to Bungie.

Activision didn't just buy out Bungie. They just signed a contract to publish their games.

Activision still profits. I was hoping with the loss of IW developers, Activision would crash & burn. The devil of the gaming industry would be destoryed. But now my favourite developer has renewed them. I'm seriously considering skipping Halo Reach, my most anticipated game this generation. If it means boycotting my favourite game in my own personal attempt to bring down the cancer of the industry, I'll do it.

I could always buy it used...

Edit: I should note that (as far as I know) Activision aren't able to profit from Reach, but while Bungie are in partnership with them, Bungie isn't getting any of my money.

However in light of recent happening with IW and Activision as a whole, I don't feel as though the concerns are unfounded. of course it may all just be as you said, just knee jerk reactions

Unless Activision hates themselves, and wants to get in stupid amounts of trouble by putting out a false press release as a publicly traded company, this is 100% true.
