Well, to all of you asking why this is a big deal, the resons are two-fold:
Halo: CE and Halo 2's Co-op modes doubled your enjoyment of the game. They were superbly done, and the game was so much more fun playing with a friend at your side. Obviously, we all would have loved to have Halo 2 co-op online, but that didn't happen. Now that Bungie has more experience working with online consoles, and the 360's online infrastructure is much stronger, this does not seem like it should be too hard to implement. I think many people were expecting this, and that's a great disappointment, because while the multi-player component is awesome, Halo's singleplayer is also exceptional. Being able to play that online would be amazing.
Also, seeing as Halo 3 doesn't evole the formula much from Halo 2, I think people are expecting Halo 3 to have something big to differentiate it. Something brand new they can sink their teeth into; from what we've seen, I don't think Bungie has delivered on that yet. To be honest, Halo 3 looks like a super-charged version of Halo 2 to me, landing somewhere between an expansion pack and a brand new game [I haven't been following it that closely, but that's the vibe I get]. However, online co-op would be an amazing feature that would truly set Halo 3 apart from Halo 2.
We've seen it done before to great effect with other games, and I think we all know that Halo 3 would be truly amazing with online co-op. It may happen, it may not, we'll have to wait and see.
However, if the content doesn't make it into the retail package, I can garauntee they'll put it on the marketplace and milk it. Which will piss off a great deal of people, so I sincerely hope online co-op makes it into the retail game. Because I hate microtranactions with the burning passion of one-thousand firey suns.
