Bungie Regrets Halo 3: ODST Failures

Bungie spoke about the failures of Halo 3: ODST recently and cited a lack of match-making in FireFight mode as the prime cause of regret.

Bungie's community guy, Brian Jarrard, said the studio regrets not including match-making and believes it's why ODSTisn't as well-played as previous titles.

"I regret not being able to go back and make Firefight in ODST work and have match-making. I think we would have loved to have done that.

"We've heard it from the fans, we've heard it from the press. It's definitely something we'd have loved to be able to do but we didn't have the scope on the project. We didn't have the time."

Not so great without match-making, huh?

He added that the upcoming Halo: Reachis the studio's chance to make good.

"We accomplished a tremendous amount, but that's probably the reason ODST isn't being played as much right now as we'd like. It has had a shorter life cycle than any of the Halo titles before. But Reach is our big chance to make up for some of those things. "

I guess we'll find out May 3 when the Halo: Reach multiplayer beta starts, provided you have a copy of Halo 3: ODST, the only way to jump into the action.

It's not really "failures," just a "failure." They only regret not being able to add matchmaking to Firefight. Besides that the game was great IMO. Campaign was fun.

I really couldn't get into ODST because of the darn screen was always turning red. There is no cover system so your going to get hit with atleast one stray bullet and your screen turns completely red if the enemies even look at you. It drove me absolutely insane.

That was the one problem I had with ODST, and the price slightly.

and people complain about ps3 games being delayed all the time. This is what you get when you rush something and do not put time or effort into making a legite game.

... I think ODST's problem was price. The content it added was superb, and right in line with Halo quality (imo), but the fact that every1 already had Halo 3 MP made it not quite worth 60 bucks. Frankly, I think its that Bungie knows that some people were dissapointed by ODST. They make a headline like this, saying that Reach is their way to make right what ODST did wrong. I think its just that they couldnt really admit it was overpriced in the same way, so used Firefight no matchmaking the scapegoat for their apology.

That being said, I dont mind. ODST was still a good game. Reach looks to be amazing. I think its just painful to start hyping it now... I keep thinking "Oh Reach will be so great" and then remembering its almost a year from now >.>

That was the only problem I had with it. The campaign was fantastic and firefight was great, but I always thought, "It would be great if I could take this into matchmaking."

exactly, i think if they had kept ODST @ $30 as DLC or on disc it would've been successful, but instead they bumped up the price by adding in Halo 3 MP which a lot of Halo fans already have

It's not a failure, just a flaw. Bungie's taking it way too hard, it seems. It's a great game, they shouldn't be so down about it.

Are you serious? The only problem was a lack of matchmaking in Firefight. The game is still "legit".

Killed the game for me, literally. After the first couple weeks couldn't find 3 to play with. Firefight is epic though I hope Reach has it, done right.

I remember Bungie catching alot of flak for that.

Oh well, at least they're learning. Reach is guaranteed to be just a tiny bit better now.

Look at your friends list, how easy would it be to play Firefight now? Not so much. Matchmaking is needed. They won't make the same mistake for Reach thankfully.

No matchmaking in Firefight is hardly a failure, I thing Bungie demands a certain level of excellence from themselves and they regret not being able to meet it in ODST. The game was brilliant thought.

It was a failure. A long time before ODST release people were telling them to put matchmaking (as we knew it would not have it). They pretty much told us they were lazy because Firefight used similar co-op structure of Halo 3. Using the same engine and all.

Though this was mainly because ODST was a quick side project and they were focussing on Halo Reach, however if they didn't fail on ODST matchmaking I would probably still be playing it regularly.

Also, I agree. Great game; enjoyed it more than Halo 3 :P

Sure, they tell us now...after they got our $60.

All I hear is excuses, but bottomline, this should have been $40. The word HALO got $60 from gamers, but now it's just sitting in their collections unlike Halo 3.

I enjoyed it (I beat it on Herioc 1st time through), but this isn't the only time Bungie commented on ODST. The thing is, they tell us after the fact.

I don't care about the team size, a side project, using Halo 3 assets. You charge me $60? No excuses. I cut slack when you cut the price.

The "R" in Reach stands for Redemption.
