Bungie Reportedly Close To Publishing Deal For New IP

Bethesda production director speculates that only the largest publishers could afford to bid on the new property.

Bungie's newest IP may soon have a publisher. The developer is moving on from Halo after 2010, and they are reportedly close to a deal for the next title.

"I think internally we'll know sometime soon. I don't handle these things, but I'd imagine we're going to know way before we make the public announcement of who's handling that!" Designer Lars Bakken told Eurogamer.

"But sure, I think those talks are, I guess, close."

Nothing is known about the new title, but Bethesda production director Ashley Cheng believes that it will be a highly desirable property, and that only the largest publishers will be able to afford to bid on it.

"You can count on one hand the number of publisher's around who can afford to publish Bungie's next game: EA (via EA Partners), Activision, Ubisoft, Microsoft, and of course, Bethesda," Cheng wrote on his personal blog.

"I can only imagine how much it will cost to snag their next title."

Cheng said that Sony could also be a potential bidder, but that he considers the possibility "unlikely." Nevertheless, you can be sure that they'll be watching the proceedings carefully.

Bungie currently has two more Halo games on docket, which they say will be their last in the series. They've already said that any new IP will not be automatically tied to Microsoft, leaving the path open for a brand new deal.

In the meantime, look for Halo 3: ODST on September 22.

Bungie can't make anything but Halo, the only new ip the might make is probable for the iphone or xboxlive.

With all the money M$ makes from Xbox Live, and all the money they save from having to make 1st party games, I can't imagine Bungie going anywhere...Unless M$ really doesn't like what they are working on.

If it's a 3rd Party company, especially EA or ACTI, then it wouldn't be exclusive, that's the exact opposite of how those companies do business.

Its on mac. And I for one wouldn't mind if bungie kept on with the halo series, as long as it is Master Chief and Cortana as main charecters. I really want to find out what happened to them after Halo 3.

i think its probaly going to be a pc\360 game because i doubt bungie would just throw there expierance away with the hardware of the 360 to try and program a notourasly bad system to programe

I think its a safe bet to say MS will be the Publisher. Doesn't MS get first dibs on all of Bungie's IP's? And after the way MS advertised H3 it'll be insane to go with anyone else :P

It's amazing how influential they've been, and even more amazing how few people know it.

I was never a fan of Halo but as for me I so tired of FPS. I am completely avoiding them in favor of fighters and single player oriented games like Batman Arkahm. I would be interested to see Bungie do something that isn't a FPS, have aliens or possibly even guns. Heck the hack n slash genre could use a few more games.Javy03

What would be funny is if Sony did get pub rights all the cow hate for halo would instantly stop and Bungie would be proclaimed as the greatest developer! :Pblue_hazy_basic

I can understand the thought process, but Macs and Wintel machines both qualify as personal computers (PC). I suppose it could go either way.
