Ok I was just wondering what people thought of when in games,a signal prompts a button press and the main character does a cool stunt or action. How do people like it?I've always liked it in games like Heavenly Sword or Lair, although I'll admit it was overused in Spider-Man 3.While it can be hard,I can't help but like it at leastsome of the time.

So,how do others like it?Why or why not?Let's chat it up.

It's overdone.

Something that was once cool when one game did it can become tedious when every game starts doing it. Sorry, after the dozenth game and hundredth time staring at the "Game Over" screen because I foolishly tried to stretch or scratch an itch during a cut scene, I'm done with them.

I'm sure wooden crates full of ammo were once a pretty cool idea too, but enough is enough.

I think someone will eventually try and make a game soley based on something derived from button sequences.

I've always felt - in particular when playing God of War - that button sequence give the game a sort cinematic aspect to it; which then lead me to ask the question, wouldn't it be cool if it was me who was actually controlling those sequences instead of just pressing those buttons?

It's like those 'finisher' moves in Heavenly Sword, wouldn't it be cool if you could control those, were the camera pans to you and you have this artistic sequence?

Admitedly, a game like that would require complex controls, and a whole boatload of button sequences in order to control a particular move; but at least the idea would be cool, because really, I wish I could run up a cyclops' back with my analog stick press a button try to grab his eye out, or better yet run up to it and slash boths its knees then impale it.

Wishfull thinking I guess.

I'm sick of them.
Either give us the ability to actually play all of these awesome sequences, or show us the cutscene without the mindless distractions.

Maybe if the game designers implemented the sequences into a new kind of way it could be a lot more fun. The button pressing sequences remind me of DDR. I don't like DDR.

i like it better when their implemented into the actual gameplay (god of war) then when you have to press a button in the middle of a cutscene for no reason (re4)

they should stick to GOW games only, seeing as GOW is the one that created these types of sequences, atleast thats what i think, correct me if i'm wrong.

No NO! Why? Someone should play the newer Conan game for a GREAT example of how QTE's can make you want to jump off a cliff. During the final boss battle, after you get the boss's life bar all the way down, a QTE pops up with a long sequence multiple times. The problem is, there was no delay between when you hit "X" for a swipe and when the QTE started so I kept failing and having to restart my freaking battles. QTEs are a waste and idiotic to the max.

A big NAY from me. I really don't like them, and if I found out a game uses them I have to reconsider getting it. It wasn't a good idea even in the beginning, and it's not getting any better by being copied and overused. Either just show us the cutscene and let me catch a breath for a while, or let me play it myself and actually control my actions. But a compromise where you have to play some stupid minigame to "unlock" the cutscene is propably the most idiotic solution I could think of, especially when you're so busy playing the minigame you won't even have time to really watch the cutscene.

I really liked them......until I played Spider-Man 3. That alone almost killed them completely for me.

Personally I think it should be used like in Resident Evil 4, where it's a small action like dodging an attack, something that only lasts for a split second. The problem with Spider-Man and Heavenly Sword is that they use it for so much more, Spider-Man especially. All of the best action sequences in SM3 are done via QTE's which doesn't give the player a chance to do much. The knife fight in RE4 was cool, but that was like one thing at the end of the game.

at the time i thought it was creative and innovating, but not so much these days. shenmue had great QTE's gameplay moments through out shenmue 1 and 2.

I have your answer for your wishful thinking, try these games:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lF-bR0K508

F

1- Fahrenheit/Indogo prophecy( it has a PS2 version so you can buy it and play in your PS3): QTE at it's finest, no other game can top what you can do in the sequences, that's why alot of people are interested and waiting for any footage for Heavy Rain.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGO5XEjEp_M&feature=related

SOTC

2- Shadow of the colossus ( a PS2 game) : This game can do what you wished for, you climb this giant monster YOURSELF, NO QTE involved, you do it for yourself, hit him with your sword and kill him.

IMO Quantic Dream and Team ICO are two of the best developers.

If you didn't play them yet, you missed big time, lol.

I guess I'm not a big have of them but I understand why they are used. In most cases, they are used to allow your chracter to do things that would almost be impossible to control in a normal fashion. So, instead of having to control the character, they force you to have to react to the scene in order to get the desired move.

Either you can do crazy moves by using these button sequences or you don't and just sit and watch. I prefer to at least be involved.

Button pressing sequenses are the ruin of modern gaming. They add the certain cinematic feel, but strip the feel of you actually controlling your character.

The worst example of button sequenses are in Fahrenheit/Indigo Propechy. In the end, the game just feels like a rhytm game, because the button sequenses take the whole game over.

I love it when games throw in button pressing sequences PROPERLY. In other words, they should be used sparingly and to accomplish what normal gaming can't pull off. A perfect example is the button press sequences for RE 4. Not only is there occassional times when you need to hammer on Y to avoid a sudden death, but then they toss in a boss battle sequence with that solider guy. You still get to fight him for real later on, but it is a cool way to combine story WITH gameplay and keep you interested in what is happening.

The same is true for god of war where button presses are only a small part of the fighting, but it lets you pull off some supercool animated attacks/kills.

But as you said, some games just do it really poorly, or they over use it.

Then there is games like Indigo Prophesy which is all button presses, but games like those and far and dew between so It's okay.

I only liked them for the God of War series. I didn't care for them in any other games like Uncharted (I hated the button pressing sequences for this game) or Heavenly Sword. Actually Resident Evil 4's button pressing sequences weren't bad, maybe frustrating on pro, but that's about it.

Part of why I like QTEs (Quick Time Events) is because I'm quite good at them.

But, right around Resident Evil 4, they started feeling overused.
